About the same as a 33.6k modem - depending on what you want to use it for, this could be enough...

Don't bother looking on highly graphical websites like this as they take an age to load.

If you're at anglesey I can demo for you how crap it is.

I use my IPAQ and the mobile as a modem, works great for MSN but cr4p for graphics.

You can get a subscription to something like OpenZone or the cloud, then you can use your wireless card at certain "hotspots"...

You can't usefully access Briskoda (even on PDA setting) through a mobile connection with your laptop... I've tried

IBM thinkpad and Nokia (vodafone) 6100 :grumpy:

Sorry Bengie, I understand screen size and PDA. I was trying through my laptop :o

ps I think I get about 7Kbps ... but I will check in the morning :)

How do you do that? Do you need to set up an ISP on your PDA, or other software? I think I can get my PDA to dial a number but obviously that's not GPRS

That sounds more like a GSM speed

Also, dont forget that with GPRS here in the UK you pay for what you download. If you are with orange on a contract phone it can be as much as

You are absolutely right Andy ;)

you can buy a vodafone gprs thingy for

We're gonna be using the GPRS to keep this site updated on our progress when we do the little drive in March.

It's no point trying to access the site direct but we will have someone who we will email our progress to.

I use GPRS hell of a lot when I'm out on the road for sending and recieving emails - it only gets buggered up when someone sends you a large attatchment so I ask people not to send stuff to me over 500K when I'm on the road.

So I guess my view is GPRS is okay for email and data as text forms, but pants for surfing.

GPRS speeds are dependant on the the network resources the operator provisions you and the compression, if any, it employs.

There are four coding schemes, 9.6k, 11.x, 13.x and 15.x per timeslot. It also depends on the number of timeslots allocated to a particular subscriber, maximum being 8 timeslots (NEVER happens), minimum obviously 1 and maybe 2 or 3 in an under utilised cell, if you are lucky.

My GPRS internet connection produces about 25k throughput.

Hi,

I use GPRS to connect to the internet using my Siemens SX1 Symbian smartphone. I use a program called Netfront which scales full HTML pages to fit on the phones screen.

The speed on my O2 contract is okay and about comparable with Dial up.

I have posted a couple of pics below of Briskoda on the SX1 and showing your post on my PC and SX1 (note I also use a program called Remote S60 which allows me to control my phone through the PCs keyboard, you can see it in the bottom right of the PC screen).

It is fairly useable (only problem I have had is with my internet banking not allowing me to enter my pass code from a drop down menu, but there is another program called Opera which does the same thing which does work with the banking site) and I use it quite alot when I am out and about or bored at work.

In reality the phone is really a small laptop (I even have a full size infra red keyboard for it). As you can see I can even watch the Simpsons on it as well (using a program that rips your DVDs to a playable format for the phone).

All I need now is the go ahead from Mrs Spangels to buy Route 66 Mobile and I will have GPS in the car!!

Regards

Or, if you have a GPRS mobile, you can hook it up to the laptop using cable/infra-red/Bluetooth...thus eliminating the need to buy more kit... :)

OK this is how I run it.

I setup a GPRS connection on my phone, the PDA then connects to the phone via bluetooth and uses it like a modem. The PDA I have is an ipaq which comes with windows pocket premium 2003 which also includes MSN, once you have connected to the internet from the PDA you just start MSN and vola pocket MSN which is great on the move.

Only thing ive found... its horrifically slow, im thinking this is actually a bluetooth limitation, as it says its connected at 115kb but i never get more than 3/4k per second and the responce is rubbish... this is using a laptop with usb blutooth dongle paired with either a z600 or a 6820

This is just reporting the com port speed and not the connection speed IIRC. As far as downloading is concerned 3/4k is about right, and I'm unsure of the quality of connection so there maybe more retransmission than a comparable 33.6k PSTN modem.

I use a P900....

Can use messenger, can post on brisky (including attachements \ piccies etc), personally recommend Opera if you want small screen rendering.

This post (inc piccy) was posted from it:

I would like a smartphone but i *hate* big mobiles with a passion... a Nokia series 40 is pretty much perfect for me.

Am thinking of getting a PDA with blutooth and wifi, then can use putty and terminal services on it :)
