Octy vRS window tinting..

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow Octy owners...

I am picking up my 2008 Octy vRS on the 24th April from Motorline Skoda in Canterbury and as it is now gonna be a new baby mobile i have decide to get the rear windows and rear windscreen tinted as i cant stand those stick on cat blinds and stuff youget from mothercare....

Has anyone got there Octy windows tinted and if so can you recommend what tints you used or got done? what percentage of light do your tints let through..i dont want drug dealer style complete black out, just dark enough to keep sun out of babies face and to look good against the black of the car... is 12% too dark?

also question - on the front windows are you not allowed to get ANY tinting done? does the Octy already come with windows that already only allow 70% of light in?

thanks!

ANY tinting of the front windows will be frowned upon by the boys in blue and VOSA are now stopping vehicles with tinted windows and checking them for opacity using specialised equipment. If your windows are found to be over the legal tint limit enforcement action will be taken which could result in the vehicle being taken off the road until the tint is removed.

As with any defect, if you do not rectify the problem you will be prosecuted.

Legal tint limits- Windscreen = 75%, Front side windows = 70% In general, if you apply ANY tints to the side windows you will be in violation as the Octy already has tinited glass. You would have to be a complete loon to tint the windscreen emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Having the rear screen tinited is >I believe< legal but will certainly draw attention to the vehicle and I'm not sure what the heater elements will do to the logevity of the film.

thanks wardth...

Only after rear windows and rear windscreen done.... i will defo leave the front windows (and windscreen lol of course) as they are...

havent seen any black vRSs with tinted windows to compare some light/med/dark smoke tints effects - thats what im after as i dont wanna draw attention by going too dark!

hadnt thought about the rear heated windscreen being affected by tinting?? does anyone know if this is the case?

i dont want drug dealer style complete black out

Are you calling me a drug dealer ?

Mine are pretty dark, but I also think the optional sunset glass is too light - you probably want somewhere in between

I had a saab carlsson that had just the rears tinted and i wish i never bothered doing the rear windscreen, because when you come to reverse at night its like driving a bloody van you cant see bugger all. it just seemed to make things difficult! perhaps there are blinds out there that are a bit more classy than the ones perhaps from mothercare?

I have a 2009 VRs Limited edition in dark metallic grey and have had the rear and side windows tinted in mid charcoal. Only windows not treated were the front windows and screen. Looks really good and whilst it is difficult to see in, the visibility from inside is fine. Also, the heated rear window is not affected. See link to the company I used in Bedford. I am sure you will find a local one though. I paid £220 and is guaranteed for life. http://www.autotronix.net/catalog/window_tinting/styling2.html

I've had a medium tint applied to the rear windows of my race blue vRS by a company in Maidenhead (Auto Asylum). I also had a clear UV blocking film installed on the front doors to protect the interior and help to keep it cooler. The quality of the work second to none.

I have mine tinted all round but a very light smoke on the front two windows. It just looks a little better than having only the back done. And had exactly the same on my BMW which sailed through its MOT :)

Oh, so I have like one down from limo tint in the back which means you can still see in (just) but have very good visibility out, and the lightest smoke on the front which just looks like normal smoke coloured glass - just takes the edge off clear :)

Trouble is Andy your front windows are almost certainly illegal and IMHO >look< like they are too. I hope it doesn't happen but I'll wager a copper stops you one day and tells you to get it sorted.

Don't get me wrong - it looks the mutts but I just don't think its worth the hassle and the £60 fine, not to mention the fact it cost you in the first place to have then done which will all be for nowt.

Don't be under any illusion that the boys in blue don't bother with this stuff..........this numberplate cost me £60 and a lot of hassle the other week.

Also - just because it passes MOT doesn't make it legal.

Window opacity is not tested as part of the MOT. VOSA do not want to pay to equip every MOT test centre with the testing equipment needed.

I live in Warrington, and a few weeks ago VOSA where setup on Burtonwood services Eastbound. As well as the usual tank dipping for dodgy diesel and checking HGV's they where checking cars, I got waved in and asked a few questions but everything was ok, in the Gazebo opposite some artfull chavster was ripping his tint's off his clio's side windows before they would let him continue his journey.

They used a light meter on my rear's in the superb, even though it's the factory fit sunset glass, it seems to look darker on a silver car. He was just demonstrating the difference between the fronts and the rears and in the superb the fronts are bang on the legal limit.

The thing is they are getting hotter on this type of thing and if you are lucky you will get a rectification notice and be able to continue on your way. If you are unlucky - like the poor chav in his Clio, you fix it there and then or find another way home!

If I drove around Brighton with tints on my side fronts I reckon I'd be knicked within a month.

It was quite amusing to watch a guy peeling the film from the front windows of his BMW (it was pretty dark film), whilst the guy on his Police bike looked on! This was all on the side of the road of a busy town centre.

I have had my new SE Estate for just over a month and had paid extra to get the sunset glass, decision was based on the pictures in the brochures. I was disappointed when it arrived as he difference between the standard tint and the sunset is not worth the extra money.

You could consider the rear sunblinds in the accessories brochure, then you can fit or remove them at will, they cover the whole window. Thinking about getting these for mine as I don't like the stick-on ones either.
