Poor performance-Fab vRS

Featured Replies

Wife complained of non-existant acceleration in her Fab vRS so I have been using it for a few days. When I first tried this as long as the engine is warm (Yes Pete, I do warm it up to near to operating temp first even though it takes for ever) there seemed to be plenty of power but last weekend I had to admit it was pretty poor as other diesels were zooming past. Is just has no grunt at all. Local dealer has checked for fault codes and clear and the mechanic road tested it reckoned it seems OK.

Am I just used to my vRS petrol and the diesel is nothing like as strong or could there be a fault to do with the turbo not working? There is no turbo sound, should there be? They suggested it could be the air mass flow sensor. Other thing I have noticed is there is very little throttle travel before it hits the floor, could the drive by wire throttle be out of calibration.

Car has just done 2000 miles so perhaps its just too new.

Any thoughts as wife refuses to drive it anymore?

It doesn't sound right at all given that many of our Fabia vRS owners complain about having to hold back on using all the performance whilst running in.

I know, thats why I thought I'd post this up. When it was running in we took it on a 500 mile trip and all seemed well. Now the wife has been using it only for local trips she complained its now dangerously slow. Mechanic reckons ECU learns the way its being driven and thats why it doesn't want to go now so give it a bit of stick when warm. Think I'll try a battery disconnect to reset the ECU, failing that get them to swap the Air Mass sensor.

Battery disconnect doesnt work, its an urban myth.

Get them to check it out at your local dealer, its in warranty its got a fault.

Ross,

I have had them check the fault codes twice and NFF. Apparently the Air Mass sensor doesn't show up if faulty and the SM suggested it so swapping it form a new car seems the next step. Should you be able to hear the turbo when flooring it as there is no sound? There is a slight surge of power at 2000 revs but then dies away as it revs. Seems far slower than a new 1.4TDi I drove recently.

Chris

Yes you should be able to clearly hear the turbo.

Even though there is no fault code the MAF can be checked with diag equipment as can boost pressure.

maybe it goes into limp mode.. mine has done it a few times now its getting colder.

dunno about fault codes tho :(

That sounds like it could be the problem as the cold weather has had an effect. Limp mode shows up on the diagnostics surely and has to be reset or just restart it. Seems to be an intermittent condition in that last week seems to go well now its slow as a 1.4 I would say.

@Ross.......what should you hear, because when i accelerate i hear nothing wirring/whistleing etc????......although I am sure the turbo has kicked in, otherwise i have the fastest non-turbo car in the world.

If it was going into limp mode you should have a CEL light on or flashing on the dashboard I would have thought.

Nah if it goes into overboost and then dies usually no light comes on, just no boost until the ignition is switched off and back on again.

Fault is stored, but I dont think this is chrish's problem, maybe Colin's, his could well be down to a small leak on a boost pipe.

The turbo on mine is mega loud, you should be able to hear it clearly.

Sounds like the turbo or the boost pipe as suggested by RC

my first thought when i read the thread title :D

how about a second opion from a diffrent skoda garage...or a completely seprate non skoda garage?

You will struggle to hear it with your window up, wind them both down and you will a whistle, especially in second as theres less noise polution from the wind etc...

Know of a problem similar to this that happened to a Fabia VRS.

On the left hand side of the engine there is a pipe that comes up and bends towards the back of the engine. Anyway, the bend is sort of concertinered (sp?) and there was a splint in one of the folds. Was demonstrated by turning off the engine and getting someone to hold the concertinered bit together while starting the engine and the car ran fine!!! Also the pipe could be felt to 'bulge' or not be so easy to press in whist on boost.

HTH, If needs be I will try and explain better.

Sorry Dave. You walked right in to that one. ;)

My MAF is on it's way out and that shows up a hesitation rather than complete lack of power. :)

chish,

You should be worrying about wheelspin in these damp conditions not lack of performance.

I would definately say there is something wrong with it.

Lee,

When I first drove it after the wife complained I managed to get the traction light to flash on in second. Now its colder the fault has returned, its very sluggish when cold jus doesn't want to go at all, but have to say so are other TDi diesel engines. When warmed up (that means over 6 miles to running temperature today whem its 5 degrees C) it seems to want to go at 2000 revs when using full throttle but then dies over 3000.

Beginning to think diesels are not for her.
