handbrake and rear brakes

Featured Replies

afternoon all, just after a bit of advice/ help with my handbrake. It wont hold the car on a hill just makes a judder noise. I have adjusted the handbrake cable twice with no result.... just wanting whats maybe needed and what it entails, thanks

the rear pistons wind out of the caliper,it sounds like sumthin is seizing/sticking,mayb a piston or the handbrake bracket on the back of the caliper..

Make sure there is 1mm clearance between the handbrake pivot lever on the caliper and the end stop. If that clearance is wrong the brakes can bind and overheat, resulting in poor handbrake. If it's OK likely need new pads and or discs.

I sort of agree with the "1mm" clearance, but I think that that is intended to prove that the slack in the cable has been taken up - ie the cable is not too loose as to prevent proper application. If the gap is too big then either someone has been lazy and has tried to tighten up the handbrake, or the return spring in the pistons are u/s - if its the internal return spring that is the problem then why not fit external springs, from Sharan or Galaxy - that is after cleaning the rear brakes, zeroing the pistons (wind them fully in) and slacken off the cable - maybe even as far as it needs to "just" have no clearance from the stop. You might need to recheck the clearance as things settle in as it might need slackened off again.
