Hi all,

can anyone tell me hoe long on average their VRS's take to reach full operating temp in the morning?

Mine is taking approx 13-15 mins, of steady driving.

Im thinking thats far too long

Sounds about right to be fair, diesels take alot longer to warm up than petrols in my experience.

ah i see, thot maybe something was wrong, will have to invest in gloves

Is there not an auxiliary heater on the Fabia diesels to get the cabin warmed up quicker?

Looks like you might be looking a pair of gloves then! Or one of those little bar heaters which stick on the dash and plug in the ciggy lighter socket...

The Fabia has both cooling system pre heaters and a electric heater for the cabin next to the heater matrix.

However they aint fitted to UK spec cars....bugger!

I'm having the same problem - a particularly noticeable slow warm-up time, during which my Furby drinks diesel like it's OPEC Benefit Week.

I'm partway through the install of a Kenlowe HotStart system - will post details and stats when it's done. (Electrics finished; dealer is doing the plumbing on friday)

My much hated a-class had a diesel heater, only worked when outside temperature dropped below about 6 degrees...

Bit embarrasing when sat in a queue of traffic on cold moring as it sounded like the car was powered by a jet engine, but it warmed the cabin up in no time, I didn't use a drop of de-icer in the four or so years I had the car.

I miss that heater, especially as my commute to work is now only 4 miles so glovers are essential on these cold mornings :(

How about an electric engine block pre-heater? I understand that some people swear that these increase engine longevity, although I don't know how well any gain weighs up against the energy costs of heating the block. Whatever, it might get the heater working sooner but perhaps the sledgehammer approach?

The passat i had at the weekend had heated seats... quite nice when its feckin freezing outside. i can see their possible use on a furby.. but it didnt matter on the passat as it warmed up quick due to me thrashing it

Temp needle could well drop as when you start moving again air starts flowing through the rad again coolong the water back down, temp will also drop after the intail heat build up when the thermostat opens and lets water flow around the system.

The ASV type injection pump diesel had cooling system pre heaters for foriegn markets, much like a glow plug there were three of the sat down the side of the cylinder head in the top hose.

Never timed it but my car is normally getting hot by the time ive reached J15 on the way to work which isnt more than a couple of miles. Needle is usually on 90 degrees by then and the heater is just starting to get warm.

Have the heated seats in my VRS, have to say worth every penny..................particularly as I didn't have to pay for them.

My Octy warms up a bit quicker than my wifes Furby but they both still take ages. My last two cars Scooby and Rover 75 V6 warmed up very quickly but with the fuel they used you could have set fire to a small forest.

I had a Rover 75 CDTi as a loaner last winter and that had a diesel cabin heater, you could set a timer in the arm rest for the time you wanted it to come on. Alternatively it came with a remote control with 300 metre range so when you got up in the morning you just pointed the remote at the car outside and by the time you had eaten your breakfast the car was defrosted and the interior lovely and warm. Didn't seem to use much diesel either.

Any reason these heaters couldn't be retro-fitted?

A cheapand effective cure is to get some radiator relief from demon tweaks or agriemach. One bottle does 3 cars.

1) Take top hose off the expansion tank

2) Measure out approx 11 fl/oz of radiator relief and put in expansion tank

3) Put pipe removed in 1 in the measuring jug and get someone to start the engine.

4) When you have approx 11 fl/oz in the jug stop the engine.

5) Ajust levelin jug by pouring excess back into the expansion tank.

6) Replace top hose on the expansion tank.

Its that simple and it really works. My pd 100 is fully warmed in under 2miles or approx 5mins standing! Also in the summer the fan does not cut in as much. I know it sounds like snake oil but it really works.
