iOS 4.0.1 now released

Featured Replies

iOS 4.0.1 is now available for download via the UK iTunes site. Wow, fatter signal strength bars on my iPhone 3GS - but showing a lower signal strength than before the update. Why am I not surprised...

iOS 4.0 failed to install successfully on my 2nd generation iTouch. I wonder if this version will?

I only just went to 4 :giggle:

Got me tethering on o2 PAYG, i aint going near the upgrade button again in case they take it away again :giggle::thumbup:

cheers for that. Don't connect my iphone to the pc that often so would've waited a while before getting this

Careful The Anti-Apple brigade will be along soon to chastise you for posting this :p

I was surprised at how big the download is at 579mb

So all the smug gits in the office that claim full signal all the time will soon have a similar level to other phones :dull:

Lets not forget Apple have called a press confrence for tomorrow.... iphone recall emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

The recall apparently involves a pair of tin snips and your fingers.

I've had nothing but trouble since installing it, loss of signal, phone freezing and cutting off calls!! Was better before the upgrade.

Hmmm they were never going to recall when it would cost around $1.5bn to do so. It will cost them $183m to issue the free bumper that they are going to do :p

To see signal strength in dB and not bars, enter *3001#12345#* on the phone keypad and press Call

Before I try that, how do you get the bars back again?

now we just wait for comex to release the jb for this os

Is this on a 4, 3GS or 3G???

I found this on a tips site.......

"Numeric signal strength on the iPhone

If you want a more accurate measure of your signal strength on the iPhone, you can see the actual signal strength in dB. To see this, go to the phone, select the keypad, and enter the following as a phone number *3001#12345#*. Once this is entered, press Call.

You'll then get the Field Test screen that shows a lot of information about the specifics of cell towers. Just ignore all that. The thing to notice is that the signal strength bars have been replace by a number which is the signal strength in dB. The closer this number gets to 0, the stronger your signal.

To leave this screen, press the Home button. Once you leave, the signal strength indicator will revert back to being just bars."

***EDIT Just tried this and nowt happens don't know if it's been disabled in iOS4???***

hmmmmmmm....... Do i update my 3GS to 4.0.1 from 4.0???? The info in the article further up this thread says it should improve things in poor signal areas but it's still that psychological thing of suddenly seeing lower signal strength in areas where i currently show good signal strength that is in the back of my mind.... Even though i know the signal itself is no weaker. :smirk:

Decisions decisions......

Just DLing 4.0.1 now but it's 378mb not 579mb. Pretty sure 4.0 was also around 378mb.

It was 579mb for the iPhone 4 I have :)

aaaahhhh got ya.

Just installed 4.0.1 on my 3GS with no probs. Have gone from solid 5 bars in the house to anywhere between 3 and 5 bars depending on where in the house i am.

The new size bars look a bit strange at first too.... As though there's one missing. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Not a repost at all....... If you read my post properly you'll see i was replying to Raglits who had asked yourself how to get the bars back after changing to signal strength.... I just copy and pasted a 'how to' guide from the net into my post which included the info we already had along with the extra info requested by Raglits. ;)

But anyway as i then said in my edit it doesn't seem to work on iOS 4.0 anyway..... Or at least it doesn't on my 3GS.

Totally off topic - but as I started this topic I excuse myself - an Anglicised version of Dragon Dictation is now available for free download. It can work brilliantly but at other times seems to have a mind of its own. If you do download it, deselect the option for Dragon (Nuance) to download names in your contact list.

hmmmmmmm Noticed a while ago that i'm now getting between 1-4 bars but only gprs where ever i go in the house..... No 3G coverage at all...... I hope it's a fault on the local cell site and not an issue with upgrading. I was getting about 3 or 4 bars and 3G coverage straight after upgrading earlier but since going out earlier and getting back home signal has dropped big style.

Don't ya just wish there was a way of checking if your local cell site had any faults on it?!?!? :dull:

Still having issues after going to iOS4.0.1

I have lost all 3G ability inside or outside my home. The most i can get is 2 or 3 signal bars and GPRS if i'm lucky. I am averaging around 1 bar signal strength and keep getting no signal and searching too. Tried reseting network setting to no avail. Also when the phone is rebooted or switched on instead of just starting with a good signal and 3G like it used to it now sits searching for a good few minutes before then getting a very very low GPRS signal.

Having read on the apple forums seems like there are others with the same issues. I'm just trying a restore now but think i may well be heading into the Apple store and or o2 tomorrow morning.:thumbdown::thumbdown:

It all looked so well initially too!!!!

Cheers

Got it all sorted in the end..... Looks like it was indeed a case of my local cell site being down as the next morning all was good again.

I did have an issue with the battery draining very very quickly though after the update.... Like around 5% an hour even when not even being used etc!!!!! I went to bed that next night with the phone on 29% thinking i'd charge it up the next day and when i checked it around 9 hours later it was dead. I did a google search for poor battery life after updating and found a few things relating to the same issue with many previous OS updates not just 4.0.1. They all suggested a double reboot/reset to clear the issue so i tried it and hey presto the battery life went back to normal. I left the phone on 85% when i went to bed at about 0130 that night and when i checked it at 0900 the next day it was at 81%. I've just had roughly 48hrs out of this last charge and have put it on charge again tonight.

One other small thing i've noticed is that when the phone battery dies and it switches itself off you connect the charger and get the battery display come up with a slither of red as usual but instead of the phone switching itself back on again at about 3% or 4% it now seems to stay off till it gets to 10%. I only noticed as it used to take about 15 mins or so to get it to a point where it would turn on again but now it takes about 45 mins and shows the higher figure of 10% etc....

I wondered whether the fact that iOS4 allows multi-tasking might be partly responsible for increased battery drain. After using applications which I know are heavy on the battery- eg GPS-based ones and some games - I double click on the bottom button and close those applications when I have finished using them. I then make sure that the 4 icons showing in that running programmes bar are programmes which use minimal if any power when not in use, eg Phone, Calculator and Settings etc.

If you haven't used that feature before, after double-clicking you will see the last 4 programmes used. Press any one and a 'stop sign' will appear at the top LHS of all 4. Delete the ones you want to stop running in the background.
