TomTom or Garmin

get a tomtom

you can always get the latest maps and the latest navcore for them from the web in various places.

Just got myself a GO 530 - has bluetooth and traffic, lane guidance and IQ Routes. - paid £90 from ebay of all places but it was nice n cheap and in excellent condition. Got the latest maps installed now as well.

I did have a One V2 New Edition - this was okay, was getting ropey though.

I used to have a Via Michelin - was rubbish in comparison to the tomtoms

they are very very easy to use.

Whilst in what was Dixons in Bluewater a good while ago, looking for a Sat Nav someone bought in a TomTom which was totally US. I asked the salesperson mentioning it wasn't a good advert for someone who is about to buy one. He suggested Garmin was the better of the two products as money was ploughed back into product development and customer care rather than fancy advertising. I bought a 310 and have recently upgraded to a 760 passing the old one on to swmbo. both have been excellent with no problems whatsoever.

As I said, pois are still supported. The article says third party proximity alerts won't be supported.

From today's Pocket GPS World newsletter

"the uproar regarding the removal of 3rd Party POI warnings on the newer TomTom devices has resulted in them being re-instated in the next software release."

I find the Garmin maps much clearer in use than the Tom Tom ones.

Someone I know works in Halfords and suggested the Garmin to me in the first place, as they have lots of faulty TT's. That did it for me, and never looked back

I also use Garmin in the aircraft I fly, they are brilliant too.

Garmin are a much bigger company than TomTom, and as other have said, so loads of different types of GPS for all kinds of situations.

Doesn't mean their units are the best though !

In terms of hardware, TomTom do seem to be a bit more robust.

I've come across loads of Garmins where the touch screen has become out-of-sink with the LCD screen. Becomes very difficult to hit the buttons !

Never seen the same issue on a TomTom.

In terms of the software, it isn't so much which is better, it's which you prefer to use.

I'd recommend going into a Halfords and having a go with both. Doesn't matter too much which model, as the OS is the same across thier ranges.

Once you've decided which system you can live with (Garmin, TomTom, NavTec, etc), then decide which model you want

yes your right richwarwickier mod have used garmin for many years good enough for them good enough for me  i sell both well did until we stopped using tom tom more back than we sold  garmin every time:yes:

Tom Tom have done a U turn on the POI audible warning scenario. I think they realised it would cost them dear. (Source Pocket GPS Forum)

I've just tried & returned another Garmin 3790T unit as unfit for purpose. I guess I must have been mad to think that they'd corrected the original faults..

The faults this time.

1/ It couldn't navigate from Chilworth (Surrey) to Guildford Rail Station, it put me on the wrong side of the station, well away from the main car parks & booking office.

2/ It didn't know what the Channel Tunnel was, I tried to get it to navigate Chilworth (Surrey) to Channel Tunnel Terminal, it didn't know it, the only way I could get it to accept it was to google Channel Tunnel Terminal & ask for the post code! Anyone know what it is off the top of their heads?

FYI It's CT18 8XX.

3/ Custom POI's - Still don't work, so don't bother with any of your own it won't show you them, even if you use POILoader & put them into the POI folder.

4/ Detach the unit from the PC & it shuts down.

5/ Voice command - This would be hilarious if you didn't want to go there. Tried to get it to go to Exeter via voice command, what did it do? Exited the route planner & shut down! Tried again & it this time just exited.

It doesn't know what Guildford is or Folkestone, you need to say to it Gill d ford or Gilldford otherwise it offers you Milford, Ilford, Tilford & god knows how many others with "ford" in the name. Folkestone you need to say to it Folk S tun & it still won't get you to the port/harbour or CT Terminal.

I've therefore come to the conclusion that Garmin sat navs are the biggest pile of $hit going, I've never had any problems with a Tom Tom & that's exactly where I'm going back to!

Garmin has a way more professional approach I feel. Tomtom feels a bit too much like "my first satnav".

I use a Garmin 265WT, and drive all over Europe with it. The smart traffic avoidance feature is the real life saver. It's saved me from some huge tailbacks and accidents. I have the Garmin leather carry case for it too, which means I can slip the unit in my back pocket if I need to.

I've also used it while skiing, to use the max speed feature!

As others have said, Garmin are a massive company, with much more experience, and they are the market leaders in Marine and Motorcycle navigation.

My son's cheap Morrisons navicon has much better mapping than my top of the range Garmin[ especially noticeable around the Swansea area].The Garmin will also take you through the heart of a major city to save 100 yards!and I can't stop it :@

Garmin a Yank company, run by cowboys by the way the 3790T is emoticon-0183-swear.gif programmed. I'd describe it a programmed by a child, I guess it just proves how very easily people a pleased these days.emoticon-0120-doh.gif
