Can't believe my insurance renewal!

Featured Replies

Title says it all, but it ain't in a good way. Received my renewal notice this afternoon following a lengthy snooze due to a weekend working nights - last year my insurance renewal was £650. I shop around every year and went with Halifax last year as they were the cheapest I found. This year the Halifax renewal is £895! I was like - what the hell? Phoned em up to ask how they can possibly be charging me £250 more than last year when I have a year extra driving experience and NCB and the guy babbled on about how the prices are statistically calculated and my postcode is a high risk area and blah blah blah - basically they wouldn't reduce the price even when I threatened to take my business elsewhere! My car is a completely unmolested, standard vRS SE and the quote is fully comp for a 31 year old driver with 9 years driving experience, a full, clean licence and 7 years no claims discount! Is that price unreal or what?! I have checked compare market websites and the cheapest price I have found it for was £647 with AXA - but even that is only £9 cheaper than last year. Insurance round here is a joke, I need to move to a better postcode! :swear:

I've just swapped to AVIVA...just saved me £140 on this years quote.

now paying £350 with a decleared exhaust mod on a fabia vrs with protected NCB.

try adding a female named driver even if they wont drive the car this sometimes helps your quotes etc.

I'm changing from a group 15 Mk3 Ibiza Cupra to a group 9 vRS and my insurance has gone up to £647 from £598! 6 years protected NCB and no mods whereas my Ibiza had many mods and was cheaper! it just doesn't mak sense!

Yup.. Like I mentioned in the other thread.. Mines the same, gone up for no good reason.

I'm going by the cheapest on confused.com but have a feeling my actual renewal will be up and not down this year.

What's really bothering me is I got rear ended and it's still not settled even though the other driver admitted liability and it's all been fixed LAST September just after I renewed so now may get seriously shafted.. not a happy bunny..

I wish people would stop crashing Fabias and putting up the risk , lol ;)

I'm similar to you :giggle:

I'm 32, 7 years no claims discount, a full clean licence.

I've been quoted this year £623.70 inc insurance tax. Spread over 12 months its £52. Last year I was paying £45.

I thought my area was good. My car is stored in a garage and at work, its a private car park with CCTV

Mine is due next week and it has gone up over 30%! Shopped around and moved to Audi insurance and saved about £150 as well as lowering my excess to £200 from £350. Can’t believe how expensive it is though. Is it because of the bad winter causing a lot of claims, uninsured drivers or just companies trying to make a buck in these difficult times?

I should add I don't have a Furby, but I have found the insurance thing to be right across the board :(

quoting around myself at the moment and not finding many quotes as cheap as id like, but went for a walk the other night and stumbled across a burnt out octy vrs.... thieving scum..emoticon-0149-no.gif never helps matters emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I was talking to my mate and he said that all the insurance prices are going up

He works for an insurance company and they are all going up something like 15%. not looking forward to my renewal

Don't know what you lot are complaining about...insurance on my 500 was £421 last year (high-risk area) - renewal's just come through at £1437, which I make a 350% increase. Tempted to shop around.

For the price of it - you should concider taking and passing your Advanced Test.

I passed my advanced test last year.

This year my renewals are much lower.

Ibiza TDi 130 sport - £225 FC - only £150xs - 15,000 miles

Honda Blackbird - £165 FC - only £100xs - 5,000 miles - including breakdown cover.

Both of those are £100 down on last years prices for the same cover.

There are some advantages to being in the IAM.

What kind of things do you have to do on the iam sessions and the test? Thinking about doing the course but the website isn't specific enough!

My renewal was in March. I was with Bell last year and my quote went up from 800 to 1050 at 21 with 4 years no claims and a clean licence. Shopped around and got it for under 500 with Aviva. Can't imagine how at my age i managed to get it cheaper than some of you lot so definitely worth shopping around, got to offer something cheaper.

The hardest part for most people is the comentry drive - you have to drive along and tell the examiner what you are doing and what you are observing.

It's mostly about making progress, safely and within the speed limits.

I was surprised at the progress that can be made on a road without thrashing the car and staying within the limits.

They also teach block shifting, short shifting and eco driving.

You probably do most of it anyhow - you just need to show it for an hour or so during the test,

The insurance benefits and some of the discounts available are worth the effort.

This is what they are looking for - http://www.iam.org.uk/the_advanced_test/whattheexaminerexpects.html

I've started looking at renewal quotes for mine, and it's gone down from £1,200 to £900 with my current insurer (although as a note, I only passed my test last year, so that will probably be the effect of the NCD). However, when I was looking at getting my car last year, I did a set of quotes to see how my insurance should run for the first 5 years (just to make sure I wasn't making an expensive mistake - there was very little difference between a basic Corsa and a Fabia vRS for the first year!) - it was about £800 according to those quotes for the 2nd year, so it's gone up a little in comparison.

For the price of it - you should consider taking and passing your Advanced Test.

That may well be worth doing, but I'd do a quick run on the comparison sites first to make sure it does lower the premiums. I'm aware of a research paper published by Southampton and Birmingham Universities demonstrating that members of the IAM are (counter-intuitively) more likely to be involved in accidents than those who aren't members, so there is a possibility that it may negatively affect your premiums. Obviously, I'm not trying to put down IAM drivers, or tar them all - it may simply be a case of they do a lot more driving, or that some idiots got through into their sample (FWIW the only person I know who's a member of the IAM is about the most aggressive driver I've known, but that may not be a fair reflection).

Most companies NCD scale only goes up to 5yrs at around 65-70% discount. Anything past 5 years doesn't make any difference I'm afraid.

You're hilarious. :dull:

With the exception of Tonto thanks for the advice guys - DEAN0 cheers for your advice too - I notice you are in Preson so I'd imagine your car theft figures etc may be a bit lower than here which would equate to lower premiums. I actually could join the IAM as I am a pursuit trained police response driver and the standards we are taught to on a four week course are the same as the ones you are taught to for the IAM test so they allow you to join on production of your police certificate. I have never bothered though as I didn't actually think it would make that much difference but by looking at your figures it might be worth the initial outlay. Did you have to do the 'splash' gear changes on the IAM course? Man they took me ages to get used to!

Cheers.

I don't recognise the term "splash" gear changes - there was big emphasis on block changing

ie approach hazard and stay in gear whilst braking - following correct observation, at last second, judge speed, select correct gear and throttle through.

It's the same technique we were taught on the motorcycle advanced test. - I enjoyed the bike course and test more than the car one - those police riders can make serious progress within the legal limits. ( and beyond when permitted - haha )

If your not taking the course and are entitled to join the IAM - membership is only £28 per year.

I save the £28 each time I need tyres cos the local garage allows 15% off tyres for members of the local Advanced Drivers/riders club.

Adrian Flux - in the guise of Flux Direct - were easily the cheapest I could find last renewal and they've been very good on the recent switchover which twice had to be delayed owing to the numberplate change.

I was paying about £220 for the 2004 vRS - might be a little higher with the new car...

The hardest part for most people is the comentry drive - you have to drive along and tell the examiner what you are doing and what you are observing.

I had to do a driver improvement course and that was part of the test. I refused to do it as it ment I wasnt 100% focusing on the road. The instructor said thats fine and I passed the test.

Also mu insurance went down by £250 this year. 20years old 1 NCB and a claim against me.

My insurance went up by over £200 from last year! I switched from Directline to Admiral as they were the cheapest but still nowhere would quote me less than £1500! I'm paying £947 with all mods declared from £710 with directline everything declared.

I have 6 years driving history, 5 years protected ncb and my fiancee on the policy who has been driving almost a year. But i also have 3 points and a 4 month disqualification. I'm 25 but the car was cheaper to insure at 24 than 25 and i can now insure a group 18 import cheaper than a UK fabia VRS! Insurance is a ****ed up system and it's becoming beyong a joke!
