2.0 PD Poor Fiuel Consumption?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2009 Octavia Elegance Estate 2.0 PD DSG.

I have never been entirely happy with the mpg on this since I've owned it (from new)...........even driving it carefully it will never better 42mpg at best. For example last weekend I drove from London to Rye (Camber) and only just got over 40 mpg for the trip despite driving in a fairly restrained manner. Apart from the fuel consumption it runs really well and does what I ask of it.

This was brought to a head to day when my wife drove me to an appointment in her brand new 1.2 TSI (85) Fabia. This was over mixed roads/traffic. She got 46 mpg (on a new car) without even trying. I know the two vehicles are not comparable, but this is starting to support my intent to ditch diesel when I come to chop the Octavia.

What is the "real world" average that I should be getting for the Octavia based on your experience? I know that a 1.9 will give much better consumpion - I'm particularly interested in those of you that have a 2.0 PD.

i have a 07 plate 20L PD TDi Vrs (manual) and if I drive in a spirited manor it will do almost 50mpg. Motorway speeds +

40k on the clock running on BP diesel, not the expensive stuff

My 2009 2.0TDi PD has averaged 49.4mpg over 22K miles. I measure it using the brim to brim method. The trip computer is pessimistic on mine by about 2.5% so would read about 48.1mpg.

How are you measuring your mpg?

The type of driving makes a big difference - mine is mainly long motorway journeys at about 75-80mph. Around town the trip computer often shows mid thirties to low forties. My previous 1.9TDis were much better around town but not much different then the 2.0 on the m/way.

I have found that even slightly under-inflated tyres (say down by 2-3 psi) makes the consumption worse by 2-3mpg.

Also low engine oil level (still above minimum on the dipstick though) knocks 1-2 mpg off. So keeping the oil-level close to maximum helps - strangely.

I used to get around 43mpg as my long term average on my 170PD VRS. On a long run I would manage 50mpg with my best ever being 55mpg. So something does not seem right with your consumption.

I'm measuring it purely by using the trip.

Most (but not all) of my driving is nornally around town which I kniow can lower the MPG significantly. Thats why I was interested in the long trip from London to Rye, but even then I could only slightly better 40mpg although I deliberately drove quite moderately.

My regular communte to work (80 mile round trip) is on motorways, using the onboard (i know its not accurate) i'm in the high 50's :) 47k on the clock 55 reg.

Cars mapped, has an induction kit, straight through exhaust and will soon be de-catted...................................

I am coming to the same conclusion. The engine seems to run well, pulls OK and generally behaves itself . But I am becoming increasingly suspicious of the DSG though. It seems to get to 4th very quickly, then stays there when I would expect it to change up to 5th if not 6th. When I force it to change up manually from 4th the trip reports the mpg as significantly improving and the engine does not seem to be labouring or stressed at all.

The problem is that all is is very subtle. If you got into the car wihout knowing about any mpg issues I'm sure you would think it drove perfectly.

So I'm perplexed. One for the dealer I think (........groans inwardly).

Bl**dy hell..........

i can't get anywhere near that !!!!!!

hi there i can only measure using the trip computer, but with a roof box and beacon on the roof and a boot full of traffic light parts, tools and even a set of ladders, i dont bother thinking about how i drive and i love the acceleration of this pd engine and i still return between 43-48 mpg with only 17k on the clock, my driving is a bit of everything as i cover a large area.

Bl**dy hell..........

i can't get anywhere near that !!!!!!

Thats on an average good run, about 65-70mph....................

Stuck in traffic it's low 50's ;)

There's ALOT to be said for remapping   ;)

Get into the mid 50's on my 3 month old (7K travelled) 2.0 CR 170

Used to regularly get into mid - high 50's on my 55K travelled 06 DSG 2.0 PD 140

My PD140 DSG Leon does 40mpg ish in heavy traffic or clogging it on the motorway. 44ish with a bit of care, over 50mpg if you're a bit gentle. On the whole, about 2-3 mpg less than the Fabia vRS in same conditions.

From other threads, the usual bits to check when u get low mpg is:

- Tyres pressure

- Filters (all of them)

- Belts

The car tells me that after 150,000 Km´s it is 6.2 l/100km so 45.56 MPG I have the 140 DSG 2.0 PD

Varies between 47 and 49mpg overall. Never bettered 50mpg , and that was on the motorway at ~75mph. Cross country cruise at lower speeds gives high 40's.

Fully laden with two rear mounted pushbikes , was getting 38/40mpg on a recent extended holiday. Shortish urban trips give 32mpg.

Check mpg manually full tank to full tank as sometimes the trip reading can be pessimistic.

Thats interesting. I'm lucky if I see 30 mpg in heavy traffic.

I think mine has something wrong and needs an inspection by the dealer, but I know they will not want to know as the car appears (on the face of it) to run perfectly OK. So I'm probably wasting my time but I suppose they had better be my first port of call.

I already checked the tyre pressures. They are fine. As for the rest the car its only 10 months old and done 5K miles.

I was going to try an experiment today and do a run down the A21 (with a feather foot) to see what I could get. But unfortunately Mrs Minimoke diverted me into fixing a monobloc tap in the utility room thats been leaking for a while. I'll try tomorrow and report back.

I always get around the high 30's to low 40's on my car, always been disappointed with the consumption from my car, always was able to get low 50's in my fabia vRS on the same journey.

I have the same engine/gearbox in a 2008 hatch,

on a run (anything over a few miles) and as long as its not heavy traffic it will get 45-50 mpg,

if its a longer m/way journey it will do about 55 mpg

that is if I drive sensibly though,

if I do much overtaking it does knock it down a bit!

note that town driving affects it pretty badly,

a few miles through town its closer to 35 mpg

Drove from Sheffield to Hull last week in my 2.0 PD, including 10 miles across Sheffield and best part of 10 miles across Hull, the rest motorway at a steady 70ish.

Trip showed an average consumption of 72 mpg.

This is the best figure I have had, but regularly see 65/66mpg on my daily commute.

Yes, I know the trip is probably optimistic, but, even if it is 10% out, that is pretty impressive for a large, 2 litre car.

Thats interesting. I'm lucky if I see 30 mpg in heavy traffic.

I've only seen it drop that low in hideous traffic (like the other week, when the M5 was shut). It dropped to 32.

I've had my 09 plate 2.0pd for about four months, and have done about 12k. During this time, it's averaging 54mpg based on fill ups - computer says less.

Granted that's mostly motorway at 75 when traffic allows, but also a fair bit in London traffic.

My last Octy, same engine, did just shy of 50mpg over about 30k in about 9 months.

I'd say you have a problem.

Hi,

Thanks to everbody who provided their numbers - very useful.

Looking at the replies and counting only 2.0 PD's and excluding "extreme" results (either very very good or very very bad), then the overall figure is around 47 mpg. Motorway driving is 52 and around town 35.

I know the above is very crude but it does prove what I think - the fuel consumption on mine is at the poor end of the range.

Do I've now got some ammo to give the dealer when it goes in for its service next week. I'll see what they say.

Once again many thanks for the info.

If you're on variable and left the oil change the full 18.5k, you'll probably notice a good improvement post oil change, but it is worth mentioning IMHO.

Funny you say that.

Its currently on variable, but I'm not doing (and will never do) the annual mileage I originally expected due to a change of circumstances brought on by illness. I'm now doing something like 7,500 annually.

When I booked it in for its first service (12 months from new) last week and said that I wanted an oil/filter change and to go onto a fixed service plan because of the reduced annual mileage they positively tried to persuade me to stay on variable and they also said that was the regieme the Octavia was designed to use. But I insisted. Was I wrong?
