Need new tyres but on a very tight budget?

Featured Replies

Hi All, Just a heads up really... may not be usefull to anyone but hey ho! I needed 2 front tyres for my VRS and after ringing around for some cheapos I found that National Tyres are doing buy one get on half price on certain tyres. Ended up getting 2 x Barum Bravuris 2's for £115 fitted (205/45/16) which I thought was a decent price for what's classed as a mid range tyre rather than a china special budget. They seem to get good reviews from what I have read (Barum are owned by Conti). Obviously I can't comment on how good they are just yet with them being fresh on.

Sorry if this is already known. Obviously not to everyones taste as a lot of people's views are you pay for quality but if you're extremely skint (like me) they may be worth a punt.

The Barums are probably very good in the wet............. at finding ditches, hedges and walls!

If you did a search on here, you will find it is a very common subject. As for cheap tyres, people recommend, Toyo T1-R, Uniroyal Rainsprt 2, Kumho KU31, (there is a newer one now KU39), Falcan ZE12 and Hankook V12 Evo.

I was in the same boat some time back when I had an MX5, it was pretty sensitive to what tyres were fitted, Yoko S206's were crap if I remember right. But anyway, I had a pair of Barum's Bravuris(sp) fitted when I was short of cash , and to be honest they weren't too bad, outright grip wasn't as good as the previously fitted NCT5's, but they lasted well!

I know that its a popular subject to determine which are good tyres, but I am just recommending a price. It's unlikely you'd get the ones listed about as cheap - well I certainly couldn't.

Have you ran Barums?

Thanks

With regards to the comment re their performance in the wet I cannot obviously comment personally, but doing a search on briskoda, and elsewehere they seem to be rated well. There's a few brisk members recommending them :) Each to their own obviously.

Thanks

No and I would not want to. Plus I have never seen them in any independent tests (in magazines or websites) so I don't know they do.

When I bought my car it had Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD2s on and I changed 1 pair to GSD3s, then a year later changed the other ones to Toyo T1-Rs. I think I will try Rainsport 2s next.

What tyres did you have before?

If I had the money, obviouslyI would consider more expensive recommended brands, but unfortunately I don't - so I had to go for the best I could afford. I believe Autoexpress did a test including them with quite a comprehensive overviews.

I had some Nexens on before and they wore very quickly, as they seem to be very soft (again very budget).

I understand that you wouldn't want to use them, but I aimed the thread at people that are strapped for cash.

Regards

Marc

My new car came with Chinese Mohawk M112 tyres on the front - I'm presuming these to be rubbish [can't find any reviews on the Internet] and intend to swap to T1-Rs again - but they're actually fine in the dry and I haven't noticed any problems in the wet yet...

Backs are the [assumed] original Continentals

Whilst looking for a member on a Vectra Forum I came across this poll. Vectra C Forum - Budget Tyre Poll

However Autocar tested some of them a few years ago and this is why I don't buy budgets. Remember tyres are the only things that have contact with the road.

Braking from 50mph with the Linglongs, the VW Golf Autocar used for its tests was still doing 27.8mph at the point where it had stopped on the Continentals. :o

WhatCar has recently done tests with 3 premium tyres vs 3 unknown budgets. http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/tyre-test-why-budget-tyres-could-kill/251766

Having said all that I would consider buying Remolds, as long as they were made by Colway. My dad used Colways with soft Avon rubber on for his MG Maestro, Winter/all-season tyres on Mum's AX and I had Colways on my old Metro. I actually found they had better wet grip than cheap budgets. They were even cheaper than them.

Colways were produced in the UK (Langley Moor, Durham) and I have spoken to the distributor Fred Henderson many times. They use Michelin tread patterns and I believe Avon Rubber. They were used in Racing in a class or Porsches, several classes of Ralling & Rallycross.

It is just a shame the recession hit them and they went into administration a few years ago.

I had Barum Bravuris 1's and they lasted over 40k. 34k was on the front. There a good tyre for the price, obv not as good aS GSD'S.though They appear more on big german saloons...

as a long time user of Uniroyal 20 odd years- I have repeat bought Bravuris (2 pairs now) I recon' nothing in it -- both Conti and usually nothing to choose on price

Here are some independent test (from German car mags) for the Barum Bravuris 2. You don't need to read German just look at how they are placed against the opposition, in one of the tests they beat the Goodyear!!

Uniroyal rainsport 2, 65 quid a corner fitted in Coventry, completely ace tyres!!!! Brittannia tyres, Spon End. Well worth the extra 5 pints over the Barums....... What cost your life????

My car had Barum Bravuris (made by Continental) and Fulda somethings (made by Dunlop) on it when I bought it ... I only drive "sensibly"/sedately but I've never had any problems with it pulling up, aquaplaning, etc ...

(Oh, and as my Fabia has smaller wheels than the vRS, the previous owner only paid £43/tyre at a main dealers for them)

A little over the top don't you think... at the cost of my life?? Read all the good reviews on the Barums (even on here), as pointed out they're not classed as a budget, and are a conti brand. I think some people have just decided to not read any positives and bring up unjustified negatives, associating them with the chinese budgets. I'm impressed with them up to now, even in the wet. People are too quick to slate them just because they are a more unheard of brand.

Maxxis! That is all....

Heard nothing but good about Barums, my mates have a few on different cars, always come out with good reviews.

Not really, if you have ever needed a full emergency stop in the wet on a dual cariageway you will know what I mean - on cheap tyres it can be extremely scarey.

The rubber is the only thing between the car and the tarmac, and its your life so its your decision mate. I bought Uniroyals and am happy and they aint that much, thats all i was saying.

If the Uniroyals cost £5 more than the Barums, then are they not also effectively 'cheap tyres'? Like I say, I could understand if I was recommending Linglongs or the likes, but you are unjustifiably being negative on the Barums assuming that you have not used them yourself, or read countless negative reviews. I presume it is just because they are not as well heard of over here. I'll have to agree to disagree... but it would be nice to have evidence that the Uniroyal would stop better than the Barum so that you have a justified point.
