Part worn tyres. Are they OK?

Featured Replies

Our family hack..Citroen C5..needs a couple of new tyres on the front, but I'm not willing to shell out a lot of dosh for something I'm not going to using for too much longer..it's due back off contract in August.

Would imagine the Michelins it's shod with are probably 70 snotters a piece, don't really fancy the budget things you can buy, so considering part worns as an alternative. Trouble is, you don't know the history of them and if you ask the gaffer he'll probably tell you anything just to get the sale.

Anyone know owt about them then?

I'm fine with buying second hand, but obviously care is needed to check for sidewall damage / uneven tread wear. I have a set of 2nd hand Toyo Proxes T1-s to go on my new 5 spoke alloys, but need another pair of the same or similar tyre now... I'm on the lookout. ;)

I would only buy from someone you trust - otherwise get new budget tyres.

got a contental contact sport that my mate sold me,he's a tyre fitter(a good one btw),never trusted anyone one else with my tyres/alloys.

probably would n't buy part worns from anywhere else mind you

8000miles worth of motoring, so I dunno 4/5 mm I'd guess.Got to be legal when the car goes back.

Will have a blimp at mytyres.etc as you suggest Geoff.

Comforting to see others are a bit wary too.

Someone suggested I go to the local breakers yard to get some off a write off!

Beat me too it :D

We're just too good on this site :)

Another point re part worns.

A lot of them have been brought over from the continent, particularly Germany where the tyre tread laws are more stringent.

I doubt i'd want a used tyre thats been hammered up & down an Autobahn for most of its life...

Any idea what PCD/offset the C5 takes, or are you any good with a crowbar? ;)

Just had a beak and the prices are quite good aren't they!

Couldn't find owt about fitting them on the FAQ section, so I presume that's down to the individual @

Colin,

They deliver to you, and all you need to do is use a local tyre-fitter to get them fitted & balanced.

I usually pay around

Yep fitting extra. Take them to your local tyre fitter and Bob's your uncle. Alternatively look at www.blackcircles.com who have a fitted price - they ship them to your local tyre fitter, you turn up and they fit em. You drive away with nothing to pay - weird feeling :D

CJ, on the righthand side of the homepage there is a bit titled "Your fitting service companies", in the paragraph below it says fitter, click that and it'll give you a search facility for fitters. Prices seem to start at

Stunning response....cheers guys!

Just my two pennies worth but wouldn't skimp on the only thing thats connecting you to the road ;)

He doesn't on his toy, but on a lease car that is just used as a hack, why waste money? They are all E marked tyres, so no problem there.

I'd do the same TBH, but wouldn't touch part worns. For my Octy though, I'd only use good quality reputable tyres as, like you say, thay are what keeps the car in touch wit the ground.

Correct, that's why I was asking for opinions. Convinced now that part worns are just too risky.

Doesn't bother me really...Mrs C.J. drives it most of the time! ;)

disclaimer on previous comment...read below!

Very true, just wouldn't use part worns from an unknown source.
