I just thought the What's yours doing to the Gallon was having two threads in one.

Thought I would start this one off to find out what the breakdown of fuel places and types was on the forum, also as a place to discuss the merits of different places to fuel up and types of fuel.

I would like to start of by saying I have no preference to where I fuel.

I have driven (very hard) a company Common Rail Diesel car on Supermarket fuel for in excess of 90,000 miles in 2.5 years with no problems, as I only got an allowance for fuel I kept an eye on MPG. I have since run a personal Common Rail Diesel Car on Supermarket Fuel for 6 years with no problems.

My Greenline II first 10 litres were supplied by dealer and could be from anywhere and then topped up with Sainsburys EN950 and now has Shell V Power Diesel in it.

I know my engine is too new to get a true reading of MPG but the first tank gave me 53mpg mainly town driving - Maxi dot 56mpg. I then filled with 39.99 litres of Shell V Power and it is currently returning 50 mpg . The variance could be down to different driving style as the engine becomes more responsive, I can say for some trips the indicated mpg is 58.

One thing I have picked up from the AA was all standard EN590 fuel is the same no matter where you buy it form, but if you want better cleaning agents then buy premium fuel.

Also Diesel can now under EN590 contain up to 7% Bio fuel and might not be suitable for all engines. http://www.smmt.co.uk/articles/article.cfm?articleid=20921

i always put super unleaded 99 ron in and 99.9% of time its shell........now ive started i cant stop!!

dont know if it does make a difference but plenty people say it does and even if it doesnt improve power/fuel consumption its got to be better on the engine

You forgot Esso in the list.....I like to put a tiger in my tank...

Whats the point of this poll? Its way incomplete there are plenty more oil companies than just Shell, BP and Texaco. Lincolnshire and part of Yorkshire for instance served by refineries owned by Total and ConocoPhilips (JET)

What are you likely to glean? That people tend to buy cheap fuel rather than expensive? Pretty dumb research.

Why the bias against supermarkets? Cheap fuel sold at the same price is invariably the same.....cheap fuel. My sainsburys for instance often has fuel delivered in a BP tanker and there are Tesco outlets where I live that sell Esso branded fuel etc.

Shell cause its cheapest and nearest to me

Just a quick question about the fuel,

Is the debate about branded fuel against supermarket fuel limited to diesel or is unleaded included?

Regards

Si

I`ve tried mine(petrol) on supermarket fuel and on Shell...tried my previous car (diesel) on the same and Shell comes out on top. I will never be convinced otherwise..You get what you pay for but you never get what you havent paid for...

I have no real preference, just that on my 20 mile trip into work there is only one petrol station and its a Shell... its also the cheapest in the area 9 times out of 10 (yes even over supermarkets :) )

Have read lots on this, and it seems so stupid how some people get all touchy about it lol It seems to me engines are different, and some respond to the additives suppliers add more than others.

for me it's cost per mile, lower the better. normally total, shell or esso but tried chase, jet and a few other brand names

having said that i do avoid supermarket fuels, if it's the same price as branded i'd go for branded.

For me it's Morrison's I've been using them for years and never had any problems with the fuel both petrol and diesel cars, plus the fact you get a shopping voucher of them every so often helps as well.

There was a spreadsheet posted on here over the weekend by another member, the spreadsheet was the result of years of work recording different mileages and fuel types in the same car. The results showed no difference between supermarket fuel and branded, same between premium and standard fuels. The exception to this was shell v-power where despite running it on the fuel for some considerable miles, the MPG on this fuel was actually less than the standard fuel.

Buried away somewhere on their website, Shell admits that V-Power petrol has slightly lower calorific value than ordinary petrol. This is due to the GTL (Gas to liquid synthetic) component and IIRC may be as much as 5% less.

I have to admit I did botch the poll a bit, just wanted to find out if site users preferred supermarket over name brand, which supermarket and to try to be fair name the main fuel companies - the botch.

It might be for petrol Tesco's Premium was mostly used and for diesel a name branded.

The other reason was the What's yours doing to the gallon was being a bit sidelined.

It is interesting to see that more forum members have voted for name brand fuel. Diesel piping Petrol and Premium for Petrol and Standard for Diesel.
