Compared to the "early days" Linux isn't too bad nowadays. I installed the latest version of mandrake on a old PC last month, and didn't have to edit any text files - everything had a whizzy GUI to do it (from a "control panel" - novel idea!).

I can still remember trying to configure X to run under an ancient version of slackware (*shudder*).

To be fair, windows still does a better job at providing good looking configuration tools.

* I'm between "using" and "using" before you ask - i.e. trying to set up server daemons and other stuff, but not going to get a b****king if I break anything :)

Jesus, I've been out all day, that sparked quite a debate eh? :D

Nobody knows the answer to the question I take it?

Also any Firefox users who think its not quick enough on the page rendering front should try these tweaks - its made a very noticable difference to mine!

Begs the question - why do they deliver it detuned in the first place then?

It's another of these unix-style products that relies on huge config files to work - I do hope X-windows never makes a return ....

(I quite like it really, but it is a bit like stepping back in time)

Edit: yes does seem to make it slightly faster. Surprisingly what seems much faster is cached images, not the network content, using this site as a guide.
