After-market sound improvements

Featured Replies

Yes they were fairly decent speakers and the centre tweeter unit was adjustable in terms of gain and direction, certainly a nicer soundstage than stock, in spite of not having a separate tweeter located higher up.

I did this on all four doors of the Altea, as that stock setup was the same in each door.

The key thing with that small mod, was that the woofer enclosure just popped off easily on the Altea, giving easy access. I have the distinct feeling it isn't going to be possible on the Yeti as the speaker covers are one piece with the door panel.

The Yeti needs the door panels to come off from the look of things. :(

Personally id want to utilise the existing treble drive location for a replacement unit from a component setup. Im not knocking the idea of the combined driver unit above (I cant as I never heard it and audio is a very subjective topic anyway!) but Id have thought that the sound would have been too low down in the door to provide a decent soundstage ie no height to it, being nearer to peoples hips than ears! - this is one reason why Id keep the treble unit higher up (as well as its ability to provide better seperation). The position of the coax driver unit in the Yeti would pretty much be 'muffled' by the sides of the seats.

Im now wondering (thanks again Briskoda!!) :giggle: what the Columbus, OE digital amp and some decent aftermarket components would sound like....

Drat! I feared as much with the door panel.

I know what you mean with the treble drive location, but it was an intense pain to do in the Altea, so I went on advice from a couple of others who had done the mod and said it was better treble wise than you'd expect. It certainly sounded pretty good to me, though, as you say, this stuff is pretty subjective. A niceset of decent components in the SM would be rather nice. I'll be searching around to see if there is any info on door panel removal anywhere.

I've been looking at the 2 and 3 piece component sets from the likes of Alpine, Kicker, Focal etc online this afternoon. I reckon replacing the speakers in my setup would easily give the best bang per buck in terms of upgrade to the sound quality. :) if only I knew the size of all three components on the premium upgrade parts....

I'd guess the door card removal would be a 5 minute job - a few screws around the outside to remove (or even poppers instead of screws) maybe one behind the interior handle and then lift the card upwards and away from the window line. The Octavia had a cable to disconnect from the flashing alarm led on the drivers side also.

please say they are 6.5'' as my alpine type-x's are this size!.

I'd guess the bass unit is but I'm more interested in the mid driver on the premium systems size.
