VRs Most Miles to a Tank including Expansion on VRS

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Now don't usually care about how many miles I can get out of a tank on my VRS, in fact never bothered about it before.

But read on here about the spring in the Filler Pipe so thought I would give it a go to see how much fuel I could get in the tank, well with holding the flap in the filler pipe I managed to get an extra £15 worth of fuel in. Yes I know it means carrying more weight etc. I just did it as a one off just to see if it worked (oh and I had a 5p off per litre voucher so thought I'd make the most of it. :giggle: )

Well since I filling it up I decided to see just how many MPG I could get if I took it really steady, I do mainly A-Road journeys to work but do get stuck in quite a bit of traffic.

Well so far I've done 286 Miles, and averaged 70.4 MPG, Computer shows I still have a range of 600 Miles before I need to fill up next. - Yes before anyone says I know the chances of this are non existant, even if I do manage to continue driving it like a grandad for the rest of the tankful. Which I doubt very much I will be able to do for much longer!!!

Just thought I'd enquire if anyone had managed to be conservative for a whole tankful and what was the maximum range they had got.

Now usually I average approx. 45-48 MPG, with the computer showing about 50-53 MPG so know it's out but last night drove from Stansted to Lakeside then back home to near Braintree, a round trip of 81 miles and averaged an astounding 80.0 MPG on the computer. Yes I was as bored as a bored thing on a bored day but does go to show what they are capable of.

If anyone is onterested in the final figures for the tankful then I will let you know but doubt I will have the patience to keep it going much longer.

So if anyone has ever been as boring as me and managed to last for a whole tankful what was the maximum range you got. Trust me even if I manage to last the tank it will without doubt be the one and only time I ever do it.

1340 miles inc 2 laps of the nurburgring 3 people in the car 2 tanks brimmed so 670miles to a tank

never managed to drive economically for full tank but I used to to get an easy 550 miles from a mix of driving when using the filler expansion. On long run Im sure 600/650 is achievable if you have the patience! Not much more though tbh.

careful not to fill up the expanison if you arent driving afterwards as if the tank gets warmer and the fuel expands the fuel has nowhere to go as youve filled up the expansion and you leak diesel onto your rear offside tyre... not good.

What sort of speed were you doing, if any... :p

Reverse IIRC.

me? NSL pretty much, and driving to the system to avoid excessive breaking /accelerating

I've never seen such figures on my vRS :-( I consistently get ~40MPG calculated (not trip computer, though that always averages at that!). I got 40MPG when it was standard, and post normal remap, and now with a bigger turbo. Zero motorway driving though, and not much in the way of long dual carriage ways. Maybe thats why?

To the brim including expansion the most I have got is 488 miles.

I haven't brimmed mime for quite a while now purely because of the cost of doing so but when I did I was getting in the region of 500-550 miles with general driving

Filled mine to the top, and then added an extra ten litres, not sure how much room there is in the expansion tank, but I managed 600 miles on that. I thought that was pretty good going. Driving at NSL pretty much all the time. Probably a few spirited drives in there!

I might have to have a go using the expansion thingy, the best i've ever done was 520 miles to a full tank WITHOUT expansion

Hi Guy's,

Thanks for the replies so far, Sonic, yes was aware to ensure I was driving it after filling up the expansion so as not to risk spillage.

Si VXR.. Jesus that's quite some mileage you got there especially seen as you did 2 laps of the Ring, was everyone happy with you driving round there at a steady 56mph in 6th!!! lol.

Ryan, 520 without use of the Expansion is very good indeed I would say, never been anywhere near that on a normal tankful.

I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean by "expansion tank". From a full tank right down to "Range 0 miles" i've had 418 miles. It then took 45L to re-fil to the tank, therefore just over 42mpg.

Hi Farmer,

I managed to get 52.5 Litres into mine with about 40 miles worth showing as been left in the tank, there is a clip/spring/lever on the right hand side of the filler neck which you can hold open with the filler nozzle and this allows you to fill the expansion tank, though don't do it unless you are going to use a bit of fuel straight away due to possible expansion spillages.

Actually that's another thought, how much Diesel has someone actually managed to get into their tank, not 100% sure mine was actually totally full!!!

I get around 650-680 with expansion tank .

I was slip streaming a lorry last night literally under a foot away from him for 10 miles and only saw an averaged 68mpg but in fairness there was quite a bit of up hills, but I can't believe you got 80mpg without there being a lot of down hills...

599.9 - got a photo to prove this lol. Gutted I didn't hold out for 600, never been close since!

Like I said I know the computer is a bit out probably 6 or 7 mpg maybe but def. saw 80mpg over an 81 mile route which also included going round the carparks at Lakeside retail park and shopping Centre.

filled up using the expansion tank for the first time got an extra 12 litres in does that sound about rite? i was there forever and started to feel abit daft at the pump lol.

12 litres sounds quite good. The most I've got in mine is about 10 litres, never know how much to risk putting in! Don't want diesel on my shoes too! Maybe you could get 3 gallons into the expansion tank? That'd be 13.5 litres, anyone managed to put that much in the expansion?

It all depends on the price of fuel I just fill my car and it took £67.80 that's the most I have ever had in the tank with expansion tank .

get bout 450 to 520 ish on a full tank without expansion and up 580 wen i fill the expansion tank altho i've never had the expansion tank completely full usaully take fear in filling her to the brim after the 6th extra litre lol i have quite a heavy right foot an little patience for slower drivers :giggle:

you can't do alot of town driving with with them figures and a heavy right foot dare i say it but that would be impossible!

naw not a wile pile of town drivin generally drive to work an bac home again lol wen i say heavy rite foot usually sittin 70-80 i'd consider it heavy when shud only be doin 60 why would it be impossible?

i meen town driving like 30- 40mph, low gears sat in traffic etc.

i'm not saying the figures your achieving are impossible, infact they are very achievable on a good run i've had 520 miles to a tank before back when the car was totally standard.
