Cheers bud will give it a go tmorrow and let you know, As for reception i would think it should be ok as these stubbies are genuine skoda ones, Heres hoping.

Didn't know they made stubbies.

Contrary to popular belief, the antenna length is carefully calculated to match the broadcast wavelength.

Instead of pulling hard, you can also try levering it with pliers.

So you wont dent the roof (if pulled too hard).

When did they start fitting stubbies? My 10 week old VRS has an "ordinary" bee-sting.

The reception in my old Volvo with a sharks-fin was perfect by the way.

This makes sense but then how do shark fins work?

They dont work correctly. You wont notice, but if you could compare to an old blingbling 100cm chrome antenna you will be surprised.

Mostly cars with shark fins have extra antennas in the windowglass.

Optimal antenna length for FM should be 80-100cm.

The shorter antennas are mostly amplified, but a stubby cannot have the same reception as a long one.

And a bad signal cannot be amplified into a good signal.

^^^^^^

Wot he said..

When you amplify a poor signal, all you is amplify the interference and distortion, then blame the HU, speakers etc.

ahh but you will probably find that even if the aerial is only 10cm it could have a aerial winding that is equivalent to 80/100cm thats why you can see the spiral effect on the standard bee stings

The spiral effect on the bee sting is only for aerodynamic reasons, it doesnt whistle when driving.

It has nothing to do with windings or whatsoever. A good antenna needs the 80-100cm in length vertically.

If you have an old stereo set up at home with the antenna as a wire, you can see differences in reception when

hold the wire straight up or just rolled up on the reciever.

I thought the shark fin was for the sat nav gps aerial.

My old 530d BMW only had an aerial in the rear side window.

My new Snow Monster has 2 aerials - a medium one and another one somewhere else, can't remember where.

Mike

My audi has a shark fin, this is only for GPS, GSM and evt the remote for the auxillary heater (if fitted).

The radio antennas are integrated in the rear side window(s) and/or rear window.

Pretty sure my July '10 Octy Estate is the same. Shark fin on top for the Columbus, aerial in the offside rear window for the radio.

Happy to be put right by the experts out there, though!

any pics of the latest octavia stubby?

AFAIK it is the same as the new Polo antenna.

Not what I would call "stubby"

My Octavia has a windowglass antennae and a full length bee sting.

Yes same as some octys that are comming through on pdi, to be honest i cant remember what spec of octy they are on but it wasn't a vrs. will fit it tommorow hopefuly and let everyone know what its like and some photo's.

There should be an antenna on the shark fin though. Heard of some Octavias where they forgot to put them on.

At the back of the shark fin should be a hole to screw the antenna in.

If its the same as a polo then its still too big. My Sharan stubby fits nicely underneath my roof box. Anything bigger and I'd have to remove it to fit the box..
