The Black Smoke Question

Featured Replies

I've owned my vRS for over a year now and been a forum member for less. (I started as a way to get information, but you guys are addictive....)

One continual thread that pops up is the black smoke issue. e.g. no smoke without poke etc.

From the first day of ownership, when I clog my car, it sprints up the road quickly enough to make me smile and emitting enough black smoke to make me frown.

Being Jabba chipped, I had a word there and my impression was that the smoke was to a degree a function of performance.

It doesn't use oil and passes the MoT emissions test without trouble, but the back is covered with soot if I get very enthusiastic about overtaking etc. on long journeys.

"Normal" driving, no problem.

I suppose that the soot might be a product of inefficient combustion, but there are no other signs to confirm this. I get good m.p.g and the smoke only appears under (extreme) load.

Comments appreciated.

Iv noticed that most if not all remapped/ chipped diesels do smoke wen underload mines standard but when the turbo kickes in hard it will smoke but this is normal to a certain extent unless its a obscene amount of smoke then possibly i wouldnt worry about it, i have read that people with smoke issuses have solved this with a pd160 intake

A bit casual on the mods...it's re-mapped, not chipped.

....and has PD160 air intake.

You'll find a little smoke under heavy load when mapped, but should have big clouds, that's normally just plain poor mapping if there's no other faults

Mine's remapped and I never see any smoke at all any more, not after the PD150 tubby was fitted. Usually see more in the warmer weather, but nothing drastic.

Mines got a jabba remap on it and it doesn't smoke :)

Each car is difference, or should I say each engine.

I can remember when I had a stage 1 remap on my Ibiza, whilst two friends also had remaps from the same company on their PD130 Ibiza's too. Mine didnt smoke at all (and is now making up for it dont you worry!) whilst another one smoked abit, and another rather 'alot' for a stage 1.

Id personally say mine smokes too much, always has. Its not poor mapping in the sense of I asked for out right power and torque, and thats what I got. I could have asked for it to be dialed down. But didnt.

Im sure I read somewhere that diesel can/is used sometimes to even 'cool' things down, so excess diesel out the back isnt as bad as some people make out.

Oh and yes I beat it... only because it blow up mind :D

I have two mates. At one point, both were running the exact same setup. One was mapped at one place, came out with 210bhp and very little smoke. The other went to another mapper, come back with 190bhp and stupid amounts of smoke. Is that bad mapping? Or just different engines? Iv no doubt your right, but in a lot of cases, esp when it's just a remap I'd have thought it's down to mapping more than anything else.

I'm afraid that's the wrong way around. The richer you go, the higher the EGT on a diesel.

Dirty injectors? What fuel do you use? Run some Redex through, then stick to branded diesel or supermarket diesel + Millers and see how you go...

My Octy diesel smoked a lot, you dont really notice it in normal driving. however at night its a different story as you see the smoke in other car headlights. All diesels smoke, they smoke a little more if you have a remap since more fuel is being injected. This is why diesels now have DPF's fitted, to stop the smoke.

if you see smoke on a diesel is because of only 1 thing, injectos are putting to much diesel in for the given acceleration/load, and sometimes this is a must, since it works as a cooling element. best practice is to tune the injector pump untill you have the power/acceleration you want with as little as posible(black smoke) but if you drive hard, there has to be a fair amount to keep the piston and cilinder cool enough to take the beating

might want to update you intake system to get more air also, that helps
