May 2011 Octavia 1.4 Elegance Estate with 17" wheels / sports suspension. Bought car as ex demo at Jewsons Oxford. On 200 mile drive home felt steering wheel not aligned correctly. Salesman said he had never noticed it. Took car to Horton's Lincoln (another 100 mile round trip) to arranged appointment a few days later to have alignment done under warranty. After 1 1/2 hour wait was told sorry they couldnt do it, equipment broken. After one further cancelled appointment took car to them again and waited 1 1/2 hours. Car exactly the same on way home, called Hortons and they advised me to get steering wheel taken off splines and reset. A few days later, took car to Bush Tyres, Hull and had alignment check for free. Printout showed 3 out of 4 wheels misaligned. I paid £75 and they took 10 mins to sort it. Posted this elsewhere on Briskoda and contacted Skoda customer services who were excellent. They have arranged for me to get the £75 refunded from Hortons, although at time of writing, I have not had anything yet.

By way of an update. Finally got some money back from SUK. They agreed to pay me the cost of having the geometry check carried out at Audi. It's a bit of a personal success, but it doesn't address the wider issue and I'm still not convinced that the car is right. Certainly, the rear tyre wear is very uneven and exhibits saw toothing and the fronts aren't wearing evenly either. Will soon be putting some PS3s on the back so I'll see how they do. This tyre issue is a real disappointement in an other wise great car. Anyway, at least the geometry checks haven't cost me too much money... yet!

Sarge.

Well, after less than 7000 miles the front tyres (Michelin PS3s) were worn away and had to be replaced. The inner edge was trashed but even the rest of the tread was down to about legal limit. Anyway, as a consequence had to have the alignment checked again. This time Skoda used some new equipment and discovered that settings were still wrong and have re-adjusted again. This has had the effect of moving the steering wheel so it's now slightly misaligned to the right. Am getting really cheesed off with this alignment/ tyre wear issue and wonder whether the eibachs could be having an impact. My brother got his vRS at same time as me and he has monaged 32000+ miles on his rears and got over 18000 miles out of his first set of fronts and is still on the replacements. Although he has DSG and mine's a manual, the only difference is that I have the Skoda lowering springs and he doesn't. Anyone any thoughts?

Sarge.

I had mine checked recently

It was almost spot on and only needed the slightest tweak:

Where did you have it done Chris? It looks the same set up as North Eastern Tyres in York. Admittedly only 2k miles since done, but no sign of sawtoothing or uneven wear on my new Avons yet.

My Octavia Estate VRS CR is fitted with Dunlop SportMaxx.

When I picked the car up I registered my unhappiness about the tyres as I'd requested Contis, I spoke to SUK customer services about it & have a reference number logged.

Six months & 7K miles all of my tyres are beginning to sawtooth, the rears on the inside edges, the fronts on the outside edges. I have noticed the droning in the past month or so.

I'm making a trip to the dealers in the week & see what comes out of it - pretty unhappy as I predicted the problem when I picked the car up :S

The dealers should accept this as a fault now.

Had my 2010 cr done all for free, geometry and two new conti sport contact 5's fitted to rear.

My friend had his done too, different dealer.

Letchworth and Milton Keynes.

Booked a slot, turned up on time & there wasn't a ramp available  . Couldn't give a me time when would become available, as I had to be elsewhere two hours afterwards I ditched the kind offer of hanging around :dull:

I will try again next week

Tyre success! Informed of uneven rear tyre wear at 20k service. Would I like replacements? No thanks and to cut a long story short:

* checked with Briskoda, found this thread,

* not impressed with SUK, back to dealers and SUK,

* alignment checked and corrected, tyres not covered by warranty but offered £50 voucher, not acceptable

* pursued SUK for 50% rear tyre cost under Sale of Goods Act 1979 as not "satisfactory quality/fit for purpose", "duty of care" to inform owners of excessive tyre wear and replacement costs once Technical Bulletin issued and "sharp practice" when trying to sell replacement tyres knowing but not correcting geometry problem,

* cheque arrived today, three months after service.

Thank you Briskoda and earlier posters

Well, complete change of attitude from Dealers, or perhaps just the individual I dealt with on Service.

Left the car with them & they have told me that the tyres are showing very little sign of general wear (7k) but are sawtoothing - front & rear.

The dealers have contacted SUK on my behalf & I await their response. Whilst the dealer was non-committal he did acknowledge there was a known problem regarding sawtoothing & that people had their tyres replaced by SUK

Fingers crossed

This is just an update. Skoda had the alignment done last summer and I fitted new Avons on the rear. I've now done over 7000 miles and there is no sign of the sawtoothing returning as yet. I'm about to rotate the tyres as they recommend. This will put the Dulops on the back so it will be interesting to see if they are part of the problem, as Skoda sometimes claim. This is not a VRS by the way.

Booked in Friday for a four wheel re-alignment.

Will the saw toothing disappear with wear if the alignment is corrected or once you have you can't get rid?

If you have directional tyres then you cant expect to be gone unless you change your tyres. If done correct then it will stop it but it wont fix your tyres shape. If you have non-directional tyres, then swap them side to side and that way you can even then out. Tread pattern will change to oposite direction and it will help to even this out. That method is to utilize the rest of tyre and save future set. Thats all you can do.

Took my car in for the four wheel alignment today as requested, left it there for the day only to be told that it needs a four wheel alignment when I collected it :(

Spoke with the guy on the service & we have booked it in...for a four wheel alignment.

I asked about the wear on the tyres & was told that once they are saw toothed & the tyre begins to wear then there is nothing that can be done to prevent it continuing to wear in the same fashion.

'So you will be replacing the tyres' I asked....'No..Skoda won't entertain that because of the low mileage' was the reply.

I left the dealers a little confused.

When I arrived home I rang SUK. They won't replace the tyres but will make a contribution of 75%, however this needs to be confirmed.

I'm a little annoyed to say the least & getting tired of the inept dealer.

SUK are ringing me on Tuesday after consulting the dealer.

So, I'm new to the forum, but not new to having uneven tyre wear and a rumbling noise from the rear. I thought I was going barmy.

Mine's a 2010 Oct Estate, 1.4 tsi auto, with Dunlop sport tyres.

I feel the most disappointing aspect of this is that the dealer's service manager informed me of the wear after my 20,000m service a couple of weeks ago and wanted 150 quid to sort it and then gave me a quote for 2 new tyres. I can't believe I'm the first person at this dealer (Watford) to have this problem.

Anyway, I'm now chasing it up with dealer and Skoda UK and on the phone both parties have been very helpful; we'll see how that pans out...

In the meantime I think I'll go get the alignment sorted at a specialist and try to claim back the cost at a future date.

A general thanks to the forum for bringing me up to date with this subject,

Regards,

Del.

Delray,

I wouldn't do that if I were you. It needs to be corrected on a VAG rig and to the latest spec. Skoda issued a technical bulletin about this a while ago.If you go somewhere else it might be very expensive and not fix it. My car is similar to yours (not the engine) and Jewsons of Oxford sent it to an Audi dealer because they didn't have the kit. It was there all day so you can imagine the cost. But Skoda paid in full.

Good luck

Michael

Have a look at post #183. Exactly the same situation - if it's in warranty you're certainly covered. If it's Palmers you're dealing with you'll need to persist but go direct to SUK.

Spoke to SUK today. They agreed to four new tyres with a 75% contribution from them & the four wheel alignment under warranty.

Have to say that they talked complete common sense & if thats their stance why do the dealers have to behave so shoddily or indifferently.

This could've been sorted out two weeks ago.

Interestingly SUK told me not have either Dunlop or Bridgestones fitted, any other premium brand would be acceptable. The tyres need to be fitted before the alignment.

Just a further update. The car has now done 14000 miles since the rear wheels were realligned (see above) and the tyres replaced. There is no sign of uneven wear recurring. Happy to recommend the Avons that I've fitted too. Skoda have taken a lot of stick over this but they did fix it without undue fuss on my car. Of course others have had a less satisfactory experience, I know. The work was done by Jewsons in Oxford, by the way.

Not got it any longer but my 56 TFSi hatch killed its rear bridgestones on 6k miles - worn through at one edge but increased gradually across the tyre and had loads left at the other edge.

Dealer replaced tyres for free (Mabor) and also got te geometry set up properly for free. The replacement tyres lasted about 30k! Once those went I put Bridgestone back on and got decent wear off them.

Now replaced with a CR hatch which I'd meant to get checked straight away but been busy.
