The ultimate Mk2 wheel whore thread

Featured Replies

I'm running 8J ET43 wheels with 8mm spacers so effective ET35. Way too much room between the tyre and arch at that, with the coilovers fully wound down and 215 tyres. Needs to be lower really - at the front at least.

I dont understand how you can drive with ET35. I am NOT all the way down on my coilovers and i drive 8,5x19 ET45 with 215/35 tyres in front.. If i had put on ET35 the wheels wouldnt roll... :p 8,5x20 ET45 with really narrow 225/30 is starting rubbing the inners..

Hi do you have any close up pics of this? also what profile are the 215's?

I am currently running the standard 225/40's on my 8j.

I'm surprised you can run ET35 as well Nick

My Compomotives are ET42 8J, admittedly with 225 tyres, but they come very close to fouling on that bit on the rear arch which sticks out, and I'm sure you're running your car a lot lower than mine

They're 215/40/R18. Sorry, I haven't got any closeups. Maybe I could take some tomorrow. There's bags of room though - at the front at least. I can get the whole length of my fingers in above the top of the tyre with the 215s, even just past the last knuckle if it's settled high.

Only pics I've got with the current spacer setup are ones I found from other people online - I've not taken any myself....

Your coil-overs must go lower than mine :D - you took your helper springs out right?

ET43 with 225/40/R18 rubbed occasionally on mine. I wore a hole through the line. That's why when I put the new brakes on and the 8mm spacers I thought I should drop down to 215s.

Ah yes, forgot about your 215s as well.

What is it I'm missing then?

ET43 with 225/40/18 rubbed occasionally

ET35 pushes the wheel out by 8mm, but surely the tyre is only effectively 5mm further in (half of the 10mm lower width), so is the overall effect not that the tyre sits 3mm further out than before?

Or am I just stoopid? :(

Or were you running the ET43s with spacers?

Difference in effective drop on yours Bry, compared with Nick?

I'm running mine on the minimum drop, only about 30mm, and when we were loaded up for holiday there wasn't a huge gap between the tyre and the arch

I'm sure Nick's running his a lot lower than that

Yep, thought that would be the case. Running it lower will allow more offset to be used. See earlier replies:

Suppose it's the added effect of having them wound right down...

Effectively tucks the wheel up into the arch.

It does. Looks way too far out when it's jacked up.

I don't like to wash, so less complicated to wash, more perfect for me ;-)

A "close up", and as you said, oobster, they are unusual, and I like that.

That is 'oribble! It's like someone has gritblasted a set of Porsche 911 wheels or modelled a set of wheels on one of Mr T's chains

That's a bit harsh.. :p

.. but I have to agree I'm not really a fan.

My preference is for simple designs, gunmetal colours, like:

Full agreed on those Rob - all lovely... up until the ABTs. They look a bit too plain...

I like the middle two, top ones have been ruined by chav look alikes IMO, bottom ones are A Bit Tosh :giggle:

Oettingers like those can never be ruined. FACT :)

you want more? :p

You have a strange view of what Oettingers look like... but anyway!

Its nothing against Oettingers specifically, its wheels with polished lips. The brand is irrelevant IMO as you dont drive around with a big oettinger logo on the side. Could be halford specials to your average car enthusiast, and what im getting it is all the halford specials have devalued the look and percieved value of what is actually a nice wheel.

Hope that makes a little more sense than thinking im "Oettinger Bashing".

Fair enough. They do offer wheels without a polished lip...

Yes i have taken out the helpers on front, and have 10mm more to go down. Only thing stopping me is the driveshaft... :( Rubbing that enough as it is. 25mm more to go down at rear :)

Have your new brakes infected the offset on the car? :)

Have your new brakes infected the offset on the car? :)

Standard VRS / GTI front disc is 50mm high. My Merc R500 discs are 54.7mm high. So I guess with the addition of the 8mm spacers necessary to clear the calipers, the brakes have caused my wheels to sit 12.7mm further out.

So, actually, I guess you could kind of say I'm almost at ET30 offset at the front. :)

Taking the discs, spacers and wheel width into the equation, it's the same as running standard brakes with 33.4mm spacers with standard VRS Zeniths / Neptunes - That would look vile with 225 tyres at standard ride height.

Not particularly exciting, but a Golf GTd pulled up next to me in the petrol station with standard 'Seattle Shadow' alloys and they looked fantastic.

Resurrection of a post....

What you all think of the latest 9kg 18x8 enkei

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/462601-Enkei-Raijin

Look like neuspeed - nearly as light and if us prices circa £600 for 4 ($900)

Looks good.

You'd have to pay vat on top if you imported from the states, probably.. Which makes them a bit more pricey.

9kg is about the same as a 18" pro race 1.2. A set of those is also 9kg IIRC. And also around the £600 mark.
