HELP - Redituning Boxes

Featured Replies

Can anyone identify this type of tuning box? Is it digital or a 'resistor mod'?

Does anyone know anything about it?

It's my first mod for my Fabia vRS, haven't fitted it yet... until I know more :)

:mecry: Can someone please HELP :mecry:

What was the question again?

The car looks nice by the way, wheels fill the arches which makes all the difference.

I think it is a Resistor mod but i am only guessing sorry

I suspect it is, does anyone have a picture of a resistor or digital tuning box?

There are two wires running into the box and two coming back out (4 in total), does this make it a resistor mod?

It's a resistor type box so I hope you haven't paid

Nope, it is just a resistor mod, the only difference is that it comes in a fancy metal box! I've been done :deal:!

What are digital tuning boxes? Do they have any problems associated with them?

Digital boxes are far superior and are not known to log faults. They are usually adjustable via a screw or jumpers.

I have a dragon box on my Octy and a mate has just fitted a digital dragon tuning box to his Megane, both cars have seen good power gains with no problems.

Expect to pay near

I have had a digital box from Mr Hoot on my VRS for just over a week now. Relatively easy to fit, although the power connections had to be modifed a little.

Power gain is noticable at 2/3rds potential gain(settings from 1 to 16, I'm on 11). No sign of extra soot from the rear and no engine management warning light. Power seems to be smoother than the resistor box I tried (sent back after the management light came on) and certainly alot less soot!

So far, so good.

I paid

I must admit to being tempted to get a digital tuning box for mine when the time comes - as you say, it can be resold and the car returned to stock. That in itself is a BIG advantage IMHO....

Thing is, some people still say a remap is "far better" even than one of those devices... but if it works fine then I cant really see how it would be "far better"... law of diminishing returns perhaps?

I think they are probably a good option for someone like myself who aint bothered about having massive power / torque figures and wishes to tune their car on the cheap.

FunkySI, is the delivery smoother than a stock engine? How much better does it feel over stock?

A custom remap is superior because it is adjusted specifically for your car and it takes numerous things into account and compliments other modifications very well, I do think the tuning box from Mr Hoot is good however.

But what if you just wanted to do it on the cheap... i.e. maybe just a simple Cupra airduct, and nothing much else... its all very well saying its adjusted to your car, but they all have the same engine

On the cheap? a decent digital tuning box will cost

On the cheap?

Well one member got one for

I understand your point exactly, my point was that I "personally" wasn't willing to spend over 10k on my vRS and then put a

Hi Paul

Been away on business for a couple of days. Has allowed me to experiment with the car a little more. Still no problems.

I would say its money well spent, the car somehow feels more driveable, very hard to put my finger on exactly what the cause is, although as I previously said the engine seems to rev much more smoothly so the power doesn't come in one big grunt.

I certainly never 'thrash' the engine before or since the addition of the tuning box. An additional 'benefit' seems to be that the engine is quieter, it growls rather than rattles?

The analogue box I used briefly made the car feel brutish, the power came in one big wallop, with the accompanying soot cloud!

I am not sure I would want too much additional power as the chassis/brakes don't feel up to the job. I intend to try the maximum setting, but will happily go back to the current setting if I find the car becomes less easy to handle. Its all very well going fast in a straight line, but their are also inconvenient bends in the road to contend with!

The e-bay auctions come up one after another for the mr hoot digital box, I have 'won' on the lowest bid I have seen. The highest being

ps forgot to mention I have fitted the seat cupra intake and a green cotton filter.

Not totally convinced they made much difference, but for 25 quid it was worth the experiment.

Sounds like a decent option then :)

If I can afford a remap in the future I'll certainly consider but in the meantime, this seems to be a reasonably priced alternative...

As for cornering and braking, well thats part of the fun innit ;)

Definatley fun if the car does what it supposed to, not quite as much fun when it doesn't!

Soft suspension set up and chassis plus poor brakes don't give me much confidence, particularly after upping the power.

Looking at Ferodo pads with DOT 4.0 plus a strut brace as easy fit options.

Yeah thats what I plan on doing, dont know if you saw my other thread, but I am pretty much decided that I'll add a strut brace, uprate the brake pads and fluid, go for the cupra intake and get a digital tuning box.

Perhaps you should try a strut brace - many people do say it gives them more confidence to drive hard, although I cant say I have had that problem ;)
