Funny enough yesterday i was looking at a 4age-powered Swift and the thought of this thread. That would be a better idea as opposed to the vw 20v turbo.. seeing that the 4age would be significantly lighter.

Here's a pic of the swift:

another thought crossed my mind this evening.. how about a 1000cc mpg challenge car, strip it naked to make it as light as possible, perspex instead of glass, plastic tailgate and bonnet, little 1000cc engine coverted to a ultra-low pressure turbo... what you reckon 70mpg? must be achievable surely?

the 2.0ltr red top turbo Vauxhall engines are cheap and fast,

if your after a 20v turbo why go VW when you can get one out of a Fiat Coupe for pretty cheap.

Tom personally i reckon with your engineering skills you should be a bit more adventurous and go for a mid-mounted RWD of some type.

I will happily buy it off you when ur done too! you could use anything engine wise, from a 1.4ltr vw engine to a 3.0 twin turbo out of a Jap estate old supra or Skyline.

Personally for maximium difficulty a twin engined job, with two 1.4ltr 16v Vw 100bhp, one in the front and one in the back would be an interesting challenge.

OR and this is maybe bending the rules slightly, but would work for ultimate Sleeper value, get a Nissan Pulsar GTi and change and mould every body panel to a felicia so it's a Pulsar GTi looking like a felicia.

i've seen this done with 650bhp nissan skyline R34 GTR which had all exterior body panels changed to look like a focus, but it was on a space frame type of altered chassis

Tom stop winding us up, we want to go faster not get more mpg, but again, build a car that does 70mpg and i will buy it off you

I would start with the 1.5D lump out of a 106 diesel and try and fit it into a big bike like a V-Maxx weighing only 255-280kg i think it would return loads of mpg!!!

am i just talking a load os Boll**ks now?

can a diesel lump be fitted to a bike, i've seen the tiny 800cc turbo diesel in the smart, but there so new i think an engine would cost around £1500 upwards. but would defo fit into a big bike, i reckon 100mpg onwards would be achievable and unlike a 45bhp car which tends to be very slow a 45bhp bike could probs still pull 0-60 in under 8secs and hit a ton

Not being a bike fanatic......

A mate of mine 20-ish (damn I feel old now) years ago did come across a diesel bike, apparently made using a Vauxhall Nova diesel engine and gearbox. From what I recall he started with the engine and worked up from there.

Mind you, you could probably easily do it on a trike. But that is kinda getting outside the Skoda spectrum now ;-)

the other thing i've thought about is a 2.5 litre ecotec engine from a vectra... might cost maybe £100 for the whole car as a scrapper mot failure

Dog slow, but does 200mpg. I'm sure with newer, better technology the speed/economy equation could be pushed somewhere else.

I still think Tom should do something a bit more outrageous, like a 4x4 Felicia "S2000", or a mid-engined one a la R5 Turbo

i reckon the smart 800CC turbo diesel lump that generates 54bhp NEEDS to be fitted to a bike, im gonna join a couple of bike websites to suggest this now!!! JAmes(my name) is on a mission to make a diesel powered bike, great thing bout the smart diesel is it's already mounted to a tiny auto box and in car form 800kg produces 85mpg, reduce weight to 280kg and i reckon 150mpg could be achieved, it would have top speed of approx 96mph

and considering the wheels on the car are 14" a 16-17" bike wheel will make the most of the ratio's hopefully reducing gear changes.

Tom please make one!!!!

How about old skoda meets new skoda..

Possibly 2003 skoda vrs interior and engine dash etc in to old shell?

Rat look is now gone.. think of somthing fresh..

I fancied taking a volvo engine, say from a 480 and turning it into a monster... Then possibly adding LPG into the bargain heh.

To be honest, donor cars could be pretty much anything. Depends on the 'character' you want to give the car. There was a thread a while back on a different forum that used the shell of a MK1 ford escort and mated it with the underpinnings and engine of a BMW 3 series compact... It was 'interesting' ;)

Tef, see if you can find a Diahatsu Charrade GTtI 1.0 engine...

there is outrageous on one hand yes... and practical and cheap on the other hand....

if somebody wants to donate me an audi a3 quattro to molest i'll bolt it all together and make it work, but for now i'm thinking about something a bit more realistic built from scrapyard parts (i hate scrapyards) actually no i don't (i hate the people in scrapyards) anywho, i'm sure an alfa t-spark engine can be got for like £50 or something and that would do. but whatever it turns out to be, it's going to be really anti-social, i'm quite liking the idea of 6 cylinders but i will have to take a measuring tape up there to look

has anybody ever cut a car up with a disc cutter before? i might get the whole front engine bay section of a felicia to use a development mule

Tom: I have gearbox from Audi S3 165kW quattro, if you want... ;)

I want felicia 4x4 too, but i can't find rear axle for normal money...

I've done a couple, not as easy as you'd think, but doable..... and fun.

Tom how about a front engined rwd felly..err just like I started a good few years ago. if you can find an alfa with the transaxle in the rear it is the same width as a felly one.. and a scoob engine fits just nice in the bay :giggle:

really wish the MSA hadn't changed its mind about mine and banned it lol

I like the idea of ECO felicia. But to make it much more fun, make it middle-engine and rwd. Engine can be even felicias-one or some alloy 1.0-1.4.

I would start with reducing the weight of felly. I know about race car which have 650kg. Can you beat it? :)

Such a car has power-to-weight ratio better than 90% of cars even with some 100hp engine...

On the other hand you can do some luxurious felly with turboed 1.9, all electric, air conditioning, ABS, 4xbags and so on.

I personally prefer light-weight car :D

You could do something like this then:

http://www.aerocivic.com/

I've fancied a boat tail on something since seeing it...

An interesting thread: diesel bikes? I remember reading about a diesel bike which was made in india based upon the old Enfield. They were a pile of pants apparently! I cant imagine a diesel bike being very popular in the West, bet they'd love them in developing countries. I've always liked the idea of bike engined cars. They probably wouldnt have the torque required for a felly tho? I want to put one in a Hillman imp. I havent the time, skills or money for that tho!
