Oil advice and recommendations here!!

A friend of mine runs a VW diesel with a PD engine so I asked him what oil he uses as he is a mechanic and services the car himself. He told me that he has always used bog standard Comma 15/40 oil for diesel engines and the car has done over 100,000 miles in 3 years. It runs as sweet as a nut.

Hello One & All,

Seeing this thread has not been added to since 2005, I thought I would bring it up to date.

I am confused by your posting re VW 505.00 spec oil for cars older than Aug 2000.

My Fabia 1.9SDi is 2002 and has an ASY type engine and therefore has an injection pump not unit injectors - it should therefore be ok with the VW 505 00 rated oil?

I have a 2005 Octavia 1.6 FSi set for flexible servicing.

On collection of the car from the airport on return from holiday the low oil level alarm came on after a short distance. The sticker in the engine compartment suggested Shell Helix Ultra was the correct oil and I thought I was fortunate to find some 5W-40 in the next service station. I topped up with approximately 1/2 litre and continued home. This was about 3 months (2500 miles) ago.

I have since discovered this thread and believe that what I really should have used was Shell Helix Ultra X (0-30W) or similar, to specification VW 503.00. The Helix Ultra 5W-40 I actually used to top up I now realise meets VW 503.01 not 503.00.

Am I likely to have done any damage to the engine by mixing the two spec. oils? What will have been the effect of my action?

The engine management reports that routine servicing will be needed in approximately 6 months time. Should I bring this forward to achieve a complete oil change?

Even though you did not use VW504.00 spec ol it will be fine, all oils mix so no issue there and it is always better to top up with something rather then nothing! The only reason you need the VW504.00 spec is for the longlife service, as you only topped up with a small amount the non longlife oil you topped up with not affect it and will be good for more then 6 months anyway.

Thanks very much for the advice; I'm relieved. Just for the record the oil I used was 503.1 not 504.

My '08 Octavia 1.9TDi is nearly 14 months old and has done 8k miles. When I bought it, I convinced myself it didn't need servicing unless the 'spanner' warning light appeared in the display.

Last week the oil level warning light appeared (just topped up with

Well the Castrol Edge 5w-30 is VW504./507.00 approved so no issue with using that.

The dashboard should tell you when a service is required.

I'm about to do an Oil Change for my

2002 Fabia 1.9 TDI (ATD engine code, I think this is a PD engine)

Firstly am I right in saying that I can use VW504/507 approved Oils in this engine?

And secondly,

I've got 2 litres of Mobil 1 VW504/507

And bucket loads of Quantum VW 504/507

I want to use up the mobil one, So can this be mixed 50/50 with the Quantum stuff?

both oils are 5w/30, and VW504/507 approved

I thought I'd ask before mixing them

Yes the 507.00 spec will be fine, and yes they will mix quite happily.

Many thanks Guy

Need some help guys.

Oil light came on on my PD VRS Octavia, as i was on the road the only oil i could get was Total 5w30 INEO ECS. Will it be OK to leave it in, or would it be best to drop the lot?

There is no VW spec on the Total INEO ECS oil, so IMO you are better off dropping (and filter) it ASAP and replacing with the correct VW grade oil.

Don't get me wrong it's better than no oil at all, but doesn't meet the standards required for VAG engines, so you may be doing serious damage.

confused now, just spoke with my Skoda dealer and he said that as long as it is 5w30 then it will be fine and not to worry!

Looks like you have a decent dealer then :thumbdwn:

Look in your manual it will tell you the specs you need, any "5w30 then it will be fine and not to worry!" is simply wrong.

Intersting thread but will take all day to read it. I have an Octy 1.9 TDI 110 on a 52 plate. I change th oil every 5k without fail, i have QG1 servicing but long life oil is expensive, but seeing as it's serviced every 5k would I be able to use the lower VW spec of 505.00?
