Oil advice and recommendations here!!

You do have to be very carefull about using normal fully synthetic 5w/40 (not 505.01 approved) oil in a PD engine. There is definately something special about it.

A taxi company in sussex were getting their cars serviced at a garage using fully synthetic 5w/40 oil which they were told "meets" but wasn't 505.01 "approved" and it seriously damaged all their engines, the trouble is it takes about 150k - 200k to manifest itself into a breakdown because the deterioration is so slow.

The camshaft lobes wear round and the valve buckets get dished and then start wearing the sides of the cam lobes as well, not good. Expensive to repair in either case.

Maybe normal fully doesn't have the film strength or breaksdown too quick. There will obviously be a few fully synthetic 5w/40's that aren't 505.01 approved but offer better protection than their approved counterparts because they use such high quality 100% synthetic base oil and superb additive packages but approvals are there to take the guess work out of it.

The skoda garage where i get my parts use the Quantum PD oil (which is by no means the highest quality 505.01 oil) and none of the taxis they service have had a problem, some of them are 300k +.

  • I have read that the Fabia VRS requires 4.3 litres of VW 505.01 oil. Is there a fully synthetic Oil that comes in 5 Litre cans, cos I don't really want to buy 2x4 litres

Hello all,

I see many oil related threads popping up from time to time, so I thought I would start a thread dedicated to this toppic, hopefully in time it will become an FAQ as it relates to all of us.

If you have any questions, queries or thoughts, post away.

I will do my best to answere any questions and will give the best possible, profesional advice that I can.

Hopefully the mods will make it a sticky??

What make is the oil? And what viscosity is it?

It will be the VW special plus 5w/40 oil probably, it's the only one i remember having special plus written on it. If it is i thinks its a good oil, approved to 502.00 505.00 505.01, most other PD oils aren't. What do you reckon

If it meets the PD 505.01 spec for fixed service then its fine.

Cheers

What is so difficult for people to understand?

505.01 means 505.01.

Fully Synth,Semi Synth,doesn't matter.

505.01 is all that matters.

Your handbook gives the correct oil

VW 505.01 for PD engines on fixed servuce intervals here.

VW - Engine Oil - 505.01

You can also use the latest VW 507.00 oils here for both fixed and variable service on PD engines

VW - Engine Oil - 507.00

You may find this guide on our website useful for all VW engine and gear oils!

VW - Engine Oil

The fact that 2.0 engine is petrol and lawrence181 lives in China may affect the advice given so far.

And now a question from me for oilman. The 05.05 edition of the New Octavia Owner's Manual lists VW 507 01 spec oil for diesel engines without diesel particle filters on fixed service intervals. I assume that is a misprint since I can't find any mention of that spec on the internet other than in a similar question on the TDIClub forum?

It did go a bit off topic for a moment there, if lawrence181 is using a generic oil that meets the VW505.01 it is also most likely to carry the relevent petrol specs for his car, most 505.01 oils do.

The 507.01 is a new one to me, I will look into it.

Thanks buddy.yes you are right,i bought this moto oil from local dealer in China.and they claimed that it is specialized care for vw group's car even for Q7.But i learnt from other place that there are also available special plus long life ii and special plus long life iii in Europe.is that true.by the way,i changed oil every 7500 km and want to extend to 10000 km ,will it be ok with my octavia?again, thanks a lot in advance.

I saw the same and IIRC it says 507.1 for fixed 507.1 for variable with DPF and 507.1 for variable without DPF.

Dealer said to me their system said 506.1 or 507.0 for the service on a non DPF car.

Im COMPLETE CONFUSED!!!!

I have a Fabia VRS which is in need of an oil change, I have read through the oil reccomendation's thread which state's 5w-40 (ok so far)

I then rung my local BMS and asked them which oil they recommeded using my registration which they stated that I use 5w - 30 fully synthetic??

Could anybody shed any light on this and reccomend which is the correct type of oil, any advice on which manufactor would also be greatly appreciaed.

Thanks In Advance

Hello Mr Oilman sir.

What do you recommend for a 10 year old, 100k mile V6 Mondeo? Could you do a bulk pack (maybe a 20l drum) for a reasonable price? ;)

Cheers

Tom.

You MUST use an oil which meets spec VW 505 01 or risk serious damage to your engine. Have a look at the thread below for oils which meet that specification. There may well be other oils available now, but the important thing is that there must be a statement on the container that the oil is approved to that specification. Other forms of words, eg 'especially suitable for', should be treated with extreme scepticism.

Only use an oil that is approved to VW 505.01 spec it will either be a 5w/40 or a 5w/30.

Do not use a fully synthetic oil that is not approved, it's really important bud.

The special plus 5w/40 that you are using is basically the oil for fixed/annual servicing so it will be the right oil and should easily do the 10000 km.

If you are or can be switched onto variable servicing you will need the longlife oil. Longlife 2 (0w/30)has been superceded to longlife 3 (5w/30) with a couple of exceptions.

Fixed servicing is the plan recommended for arduous use (stop start / high speed, high load) and variable servicing is recommended for light duty (low speed, low load, light motorway cruising).

If you open up your service book and look at the paper label with all the PR codes on it will tell you whether it is ok for variable servicing. It will be the bottom left PR code and if your car was set up for variable it will have QG1 stamped there, if there is either QG2/QG0 you are stuck with the fixed servicing plan.

DGW has hit the nail on the head again.

I would have thought the 5w-30 they are on about it the VW507.00 spec which is used for the PD engine on variable service, though variable service is not an option for the Fabia.

thanks guys.

Iv just printed the what type of oil post so I can take that with me, shouldn't get wrong that way,

505.01 standard covers only SAE viscosities of 5w-40

Should your dealer says 5w-30 this means that your car is VW 507.00 more likely. But it could be also a mistake.

At the end of the day no one knows what is really behind these standards. VW says that 504/507 standard is back compatible with "older" standards. No clear guidance however is available anywhere. I'm still in doubt if I upgrade from 505.01(5w-40) to 507.00(5w-30) and I stay on fixed servicing intervals 10k miles, whether the engine protection will be better, and wether I will achieve some fuel economy but nobody can confirm this.

THANKS for all the advice and responses.

I have sorted the problem and purchased some 5w/40 VW 505.01 specified, put the new oil in and done a few hundread miles over the weekend with no problem's.

Once again thanks for all the advice.

Andy

Excellent, the 505.01 oil you have purchased will be ideal.

Not quite true bud, both Mobil and Shell make a 505.01 approved oil that's a 5w/30 but is not the longlife 507.00 / 504.00. I think the Mobil one is called Synt S special V 5w/30 but i'm not sure about the Shell.

Here is the product sheet for Mobil Synt S Special V. You will see that it is 5W-40 oil with VW505 01 approval. I cannot find any mention of a 5W-30 version of it. If you let me have more details of the Shell oil, I will look that up too.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm so completely baffled by al this.

I have a 1.9 SDi Octavia. What should i be using (hope you say what i have been using)

Also, i'm buying my dads 55 plate Passat 1.9 TDi 105 soon. Anyone know what oil that should be. I think its on variable servicing and would like it to stay that way.
