Tyre Life

Featured Replies

What sort of life can I expect from the tyres on my vRS ?

They're Dunlop SP Sport 3000, 205/50 R17, as supplied with the vehicle from new.

I do half my driving on M'ways, and half going pretty hard on "B" roads.

dunno about others but mine are 1500 miles old and im a mm or 2 down already - so im guessing about 9-10k max ...allowing for the novelty of full power starts wearing off.

assuming no track days...;)

Used to get 20,000 out of my Conti eco-contacts. Not sure how long my new Marshalls are going to last though...?

Had to change both my LHS tyres after around 13k; the rear one was badly underflated and I'm not sure what was going on with the front one (wear on out edge and down the centre). Maybe seomthing to do with all the round-abouts is Basingstoke and a little over inflated.

Oh, these were the Dunlops.

I know it's not an RS, but I changed the front tyres (2.5mm tread depth left) on mine at 17,000 miles. They were Pirelli 6000 205/55 * 16

must be my driving style.... or following Ian's 4x4 that does for mine.

My SP 2000s have 6mm of tread left after 5640 miles. I guess I can look forward to 40-50000 miles on the set. :D

Nick on cheap nasty tyres here (Star Performers - whatever those are). Done 17k miles so far and about 5mm left. Mainly motorway miles though.

Good news - only another 10k miles to before I can get rid of the horrid things :bounce:

Bad news - better tyres will wear out quicker :(

Michelin Pilot Primacy on mine - I'd imagine they're the originals. Front right is going to

need changing in a couple of weeks, front left is slight less worn, and there's about 28k miles

covered.

Rob.

Our original P6000's have done 23K and look ok:)

I also have the Dunlop SP 3000. The fronts were looking quite sorry at 13k, so I swapped them with the rears (I want to change all 4 at the same time).

I am now on 18k and expect to change all 4 at 20k - not bad considering!

By the way, anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking of P-zeros (225/45/17) instead of the original 205/50/17. What's good?

Cheers

Richard.

I got Pirelli PZero Rossos (225/45) on the rear. When the front need chagning I'll get some more.

As they're on the back can't really make a judgement.

They are asymmetric i.e. tread is different on either side but you can get a directional version for the front only as well. May try for these if the cost isn't prohibitive.

I think DaveU has the Rossos all round and I believe Jon (TaviaRS) likes the Nero version.

Continental Sport Contact 2 are also quite highly regarded; it was a choice between these and the Rossos for me. Both cost about the same from Micheldever @

If I can get 20k out of mine by swopping the fronts with the rears I will be happy enough - plus I'll only be buying 3 new ones and going for about 2mm on the spare !

Just changed the fronts at 11K , was on Dunlops , have now changed to Pirelli Rossos , the Dunlops would have lasted better but for the RPM late summer tour .............kind of destroyed them ! The pirelli's cost me

I got 22k out of the fronts on SP3000's. Rears were doing fine until I got a nail in one and a screw in the other:grumpy:

Have Avon ZZ3's all round now on 205/50/17. Tyre grip is on par with the SP's but time will tell if they are as durable.

when i bought my octavia i was told it had the original tyres on it which were Pirelli somethings and the car had done 68,000!!!! :confuse:

Is this a record or what and yes they were all worn out :D

Victor, do you use the turbo on your car or is it just for novely value?

I won't even ask about the 4x4 bit as I already know the answer :D

Oh, and I suspect I may be using the turbo from time to time - or is it somehow disabled when driving with a light touch? My sons are willing to concede that my car will more than give their cars (BMW 325 and Nissan 200SX) a run for their money. :D

Where I probably differ from many members is that I have bought my car to keep for the foreseeable future - ie long-term - rather than trade it in when 3 years/60K is up or a new model is released or I feel like a change for change's sake.

dont worry Denis i got the tyres changed when i bought the car :D

You have me wrong Denis, I am also keeping my car long term. Hell, you think I

Oh, and a standard vRS will give a BMW 525 or Nissan 200SX a run for their money, no overclocking needed :D
That being so, perhaps I have been too modest in my description of what can be achieved with 230bhp .......redface.gif

You have indeed been too modest Denis.

Any of us with 230Bhp+ should dispense with those 2 cars quite happily ;)

But of course, we're all careful Skoda drivers, and would never indulge in such shenanigans :D

Yep, I suspect more that half a mm tyre wear in 5k is achievable if that potential was used to full effect, maybe even the ESP would be used as well!!

Does this mean that you don't need me to tell you that tyre wear is more even front and rear on a 4X4 than a FWD car...............? :thumb:

.

On the downside Denis, aren't you supposed to change tyres in sets of 4 too ? awwwwww :)
