Understeer Hell

Featured Replies

Hi all

Wondering what people have done to their cars handling, i've lowered mine (Vrs) on eibachs but still get really bad understeer (used to drive a puma which gripped miles better), I understand that the weight of the diesel lump wont help matters but is there any other mods out there to help combat this - antiroll or camber adjustments for example available to us? Still on the standard Pilot premacy tyres which will hopefully wear out soon so I can get some sticky yokos on!

Think this is the main problem - I move from budgets to mid-range tyres and the difference is amazing - virtually no understeer now :D

Had a feeling they weren't helping much! Didn't think they were budget tyres tho? Anyone had any experience with the new Yokohama Parada tyres?

Goodyear eagle F1's GSD 3's i think. Well so far so good they have transformed my car :)

Nah - mines not a vRS so it had budget tyres on it when I bought it :D

Chris

pilot exalto's on mine seem good but they are very well designed

Tightening up the back end will help as well.

Rear ARB would do the job, but not sure if they're available for the Fabia.

Premacy's are designed for high milage not sporty handling.

They are bloody expensive and a good tyre if you want them to last for ages doing motorway miles but as a sporty tyre they are useless.

Saying that the vRS has a very heavy nose and it's something you can never totally dial out.

Cheers

Lee

Its interesting (to me at least) that the vRS is still understeery with that suspension. I think the tyres will help greatly, but from what your saying it sounds like either you will never get rid of it, or something else needs to be done...

So to the forum experts: What is the best way to keep that heavy nose in check?

more self control of the go pedal? :P

LMAO!

Seriously though :P

Hi Phil,

My mate has the Parada's on his Veccy. He's had them for quite a while now and swears by them. They're very soft though so I'm not sure how long they'd last you... :)

P.S. Were you in Pumabuild last Thursday afternoon with a mate?

Thought strut braces were recommended to make it steer a tad better - tyres will make a big difference no doubt.

Dont think a strut brace will help with understeer though.. only chassis flex.

Not used them before but they are nice and cheap from www.topgear.co.uk at the mo,

I believe that eibach are making a rear arb for the fabia - I started a tread on this a while ago. This will lead to a more neutrally balanced car, but there is the possibility that it will snap into oversteer more readily... Are you quick enough to catch it??? A few octavia owners have fitted the neuspeed rear arb and are very happy with it!

I'm getting eibach springs and dampers fitted in two weeks and will see how the car changes, but I may well be tempted by a rear arb. I really don't like the fact that you cannot bring the car back into line with a bit of lift off oversteer....

Watch this space!

What is the best way to keep that heavy nose in check?

Ligher engine would be the best way...been saying this all along... :D

Other alternative is to put wider wheels on the front than the back, and remove the spare wheel and rear seats...should make it oversteer more.

Rob.

You Dont need lowering, new wheels, Tyres or anything. Just Get a Fabia Saloon :) They oversteer.........badly

Dont think a strut brace will help with understeer though.. only chassis flex.

Bit if the chassis is flexing then the contact patch of the tyres is changing. Less grip = more understeer.

Well I certainly intend to give it a try anyway :)

its a FWD car with a heavy nose... its always going to understeer!

plus michelins + greasey conditions dont help!

tho i have found that the eibachs are nicely balanced.. good for getting a nice neutral drift round sharston roundabout :D

Thanks for all the comments guys

I know Alan at Pumabuild very well mate - I used to have a puma powered zetecs fiesta which Alan built for me, got featured in Fast Ford mag last year :) I only wish it did 50mpg as it handled like a dream

I'll look into the rear arb - already got the strut braces and they don't do anything for understeer really. Managed to find a few tyres rated at 215/45/16 so hopefully will be able to get the front in control soon!

Have a chat with Rich at powerstation in Cheltenham to see what thoughts they have, they have done 4 wheel allignments on my last 2 cars & dialled out a lot of the understeer

I have eibach dampers and front lower and rear upper strut brace and falkerns. Understeer has been reduced alot but still their when pushed.

I have to say that fitting a front upper strut brace (seat sport) does reduce understeer and makes the car turn in much quicker, I was amazed at how much better it made the car @ cornering & extra feel/confidence it gives you, not bad for
