2001 X reg 2.0 Fabia Elegance advice

Featured Replies

Hi Fabia 1 guys :)

Anyone owned one of the above able to comment on general performance, economy, tunability etc etc?

I presume it's an 8v motor with about 155bhp, so should have a bit of scope?

Any info would be greatly appreciated

120 bhp iirc

I believe Falkens are needed for this action to avaliable to you :giggle:

Haha......no, just a cheap runabout that I might be able to tinker with a bit

I think the 2.0 is only 115bhp stock.

If ya looking for a cheap run around than surely the 2.0 aint the best motor? MPi or HTP?

Are you talking down the shops/tip etc

If it were me I'd strip the interior and do something a little 'out there' with it

Could be a good grim that

Elderly lady owner ........think of clutch lol

Maybe a bit expensive for stripping/trackiing

My last fabia car was a 2.0 fabia . yes 115 standard and with a repam from amd it had 130 bhp. I also did panen filter and pd160 intake after so may have been slightly more.it was nippy but not fast. got 40mpg roughly. Not a bad car but no Vrs.

Perfect for a 1.8t transplant though.

i owned a 2.0 fabia for a few years, 115bhp as standard.. bit of a snotter of an engine really, well known for eating it's own piston rings, then drinking it's own oil...

in terms of performance there's not much in it between a fabia vrs and a 2.0 model despite what people say, but as tech1e has said above, it is nearly ideal for transplanting a 1.8t into

I think its the old Golf MK3 or 4 engine last used in the cabriolet?? Theres a well know tunner/builder in Golf circles called Dirk Yan Jeromme??? Belguim, Holland (can't remember exact details, ask VW forums) who rebuilds long and short block 2lt 8v engines and converts them to 16v with G60 superchargers!! VERY FAST!!!and more reliable than 1.8 turbo!!! Mind you ...not cheap!!!! :giggle:

Yeh only 20 bhp and some 100 ft lbs or torque :giggle:

Vrs is faster sorry.

Gap widens even more after a remap.

I dunno, ya know... I'm actually inclined to go with Tom on this one.. Although I haven't driven a 2.0 I can see that....

Surely only having 5 gears means 1st is a little longer? So no silly early shift (ignoring 2nd gear starts)..

That, and being petrol it'll rev higher as well? so as the vRS goes for a shift the 2.0 just hits it's stride?

I'm only guessing really.. But I reckon they're so different that it could be closer than people think.. It's just that with the vRS (as is always the case) The torque makes it feel faster.

Brimma...

I had a 1.4 16v Y reg in Green with that colour interior.. the plastics don't show scratches like the other colours, so with a decent clean always came up fresh looking.

Plus, you'd be in that super rare club (that I used to be) of having electric rear windows!

The only thing I'd say having had a Y plate on 45k, and then an 04 plate on 45K.. The Y plate was notably earlier on the build quality front.. Not a bad thing, just felt like some parts were screwed up more tightly and others slightly looser. It was things like the locks sounded like shoot bolts on the Y plate and more like "locks" on the 04.

Oh, and it'll ping when you've not got your belt on even if the engines not started.

Essentially the same car as my PastyWagon #2 Brimma, which is turn is the same as a Mk3 Golf GTI.

8v will deffo only be 115bhp, the 16v's available elsewhere were 150bhp

Mine does me perfectly as a commuting tool (32mpg average and best of 42mpg for the 10 mile trip), loves to rev when the mood takes me, and managed to fit enough supplies to build an entire deck into it last weekend (4x 2.4m frame + joists + 20x boards!)

It always baffled me why in the Golf and Ibiza this engine was the second sportiest step on the ladder, yet in the Fabia it was purely and unreservedly Granny fodder!

You also get the stunning brown/beige/tan interior!!! Yummy!!

We'll find out on Saturday at Combe Rob!

PastyWagon #2 will be going for it good and proper; although unremapped VRS's there will for it to pick off I dunno!

The 2.0L 8v is decades old, i believe VW designed it in 1992yr i have three family members with 2.0L 8v golf GTi's(hardly a real gti though)

the engine is more troublesome than others in the VW range and it's thirsty, considering the power output!

also consider that the 1.4 16v 100bhp engine is more modern, economical, half the price road tax, much easier to sell, refined and IMO reliable

i just wouldn't touch the 2.0L fabia, however putting a 20VT engine is always a good idea.

Pastyboy

i thought it was the third sportiest model in the mk3 ladder, first being the late turbo models, second the 2.0L 16v then third 2.0L 8v

I have to agree the low power output does show the engines age!

Modern 1.4 engines will make 115bhp all day long! :)

In the mk2 Beezer there was no turbo option only the 16v or the 8v

and i'll admit that i had no idea there was a Golf mk3 turbo!

***EDIT***

Although there was the VR6 which i guess was the top step of Mk3 Golf-dom

...and i'll admit that i had no idea there was a Golf mk3 turbo!

That's because there wasn't one! Mk3 Golfs in descending order of power were 2.8 VR6 (174bhp), 2.0 16V (150bhp), 2.0 8V (115bhp). We had a 2.0 8V GTI. It was a nice enough car once the standard shocks were changed for Konis (the mk3 was renowned for having inadequate standard damping), but it was breathless and it was pointless trying to rev much past 5000-5500rpm in anything higher than second gear. It could barely keep up with the 16V Mondeos and Vectras of the day and many think it didn't deserve to wear the GTI badge.

Turbos came in with the mk4 Golf, the 1.8T putting out 150bhp except for run out late models that came with a six speed box and put out 180bhp. Early non-turbo GTIs used the 1.8 20V engine rated at 125bhp, but then switched to the 2.0 8V 115bhp engine. Some say it was because the 2.0 8V was more torquey than the 1.8 20V, but others reckon it was because the VW group needed all the 1.8 20V blocks to keep up with demand for the turbo engines.

That's because there wasn't one!

Well I didn't want to say :smirk:

However as you say the 8v 2.0l survived it was underpowered when shifting a (relatively) light Fabia or Ibiza, really underpowered in a Mk3 Golf and plainly ridiculous when put in a lardy Mk4 Golf!

I dunno, ya know... I'm actually inclined to go with Tom on this one.. Although I haven't driven a 2.0 I can see that....

after a simple remap the vrs is faster for sure purely because of its turbo. and not all 2.0 elegance had rear electric windows - mine didnt.

I really like that - very '70s BL  .

Found that Dutch tunning company that made high output, high quality 2lt 8v and 16v G60 engines/conversions!!

Also found old (4 years ago) report on race/rally ibiza with a 2lt 16v producing 240bhp without turbos, superchargers, or nitrous!! made by Mike Callaghan Motorsport!

Or try http://www.tsr-performancestore.com for a UK based tuner of 2lt golf engines!!

Just get the engine balanced, blueprinted, gasflowed, ported, 16v conversion for the head and then leave everyone else behind.. with not turbo worries, aditional weight etc!!! B)
