Fabia DRL (running lights) Help please

Featured Replies

We have just ordered a fabia monte carlo. I've noticed that the running lights are just a normal bulb and dont look very bright. I am thinking of getting some LED bulbs for them. Does anybody know if LED's will work? or will a fault light come on the dash? my mate put some in a seat and a fault light comes on, he told me that i might need some special LED's(if available) that work with german canbus wiring. Can anybody shed some light on this for me please. Cheers.

  • Here is a quick pic of my new sidelights. What do you think?

  • The true watt of a 5 watt-diode is 5 watt. They are however not pushing 5 watt through each diode, it's 1 watt in those lamps. False advertising is what it's called . I should know, I work with LED

  • I haven't seen them in full daylight yet, only put them in tonight when I got home from work. They seem to be brighter and emit light from the side of the bulb too so it makes use of the reflective ho

Interesting comment - I think the DRLs are fairly bright for what they are - indeed a few of us have commented on other drivers reactions who think they are foglights and proceed to flash/main beam/two finger salute (select whichever!). I presume you've seen them in the flesh so to speak? I wonder if the bulbs have changed (I have a Sept 2010 Elegance)?

Are they difficult to fit?

I've been considering fitting a pair of leds, but not sure if they are stamped with an e or will invalidate my insurance (modification). More research required.

Fabfabfabia.

On my mobile at the moment but will post pics and an eBay link for my choice later when I get home.

If to play out with my monte now :D

Thanks jonro2009, looking forward to seeing what you did (love to hear your horn too!)

These are the bulbs I have used, very impressed with them, and no error codes! On the subject of DRLs I am wanting to get hold of a VCDS cable/software to activate the tail lights with the DRLs and also to have the dash binnacle lights to come on with ignition.

FAB1

Horn is, excuse the pun, 'fab' I will post a real quick video when I have someone to toot the horn for me. So easy to fit, the only thing that took anytime was creating my own wiring loom to just 'plug and play' with the Fabias existing socket. Plenty of room for a fanfare horn behind the bumper...it was Childs play.

FAB! Just wondering, is the 10 watts per bulb (2 x 5W per bulb) of these Cree's any more or less wattage than the standard Skoda DRL fitted bulb? And do these bulbs give a brighter, less yellowy light than, say, these ones?:-

Thanks for the picture upload, jonro - LOL, I love your doctored number plate in this image, but does Lady Penelope know you've knicked her registration? ;-)

Hi

Yes, it is 2 X 5W Q5 CREE chips, 10W per unit.

To be honest I'm not sure of the difference in Wattage between these bulbs and the OEM. I can tell you there is no flickering and no dash lights coming on.

In my experience SMD bulbs don't last as long as the CREE chips, they start to flicker because the draw is less. The CREE chips are advertised as being a 'whiter' light than SMD/LED and I tend to agree. it is a bit subjective though depending on your eyesight. The CREE have their own projector lens so they don't use the reflector of the lamp cluster as the SMD would do. The SMD light would 'fill' the light housing more due to the OEM reflector but in my experience/opinion CREE is the way forward for styling and safety.

I have the urge to do a HID conversion for the headlights and the Fogs but it would be illegal as there are no washers and they would probably dazzle other drivers. Have you/anyone found any decent direct replacement bulbs that actually make a difference?

Lady Penelope has nothing on my girlfriend and it was her idea so I will wait for her call of complaint and let my gf deal with it

Thanks jonro, I'll go ahead and get me some of these Cree's 2x5w and see how easy they are to fit myself (if I bugger the car up the wife will throttle me!).

On another note, are you still using the stock front speakers or have you changed those? I changed mine to Rainbows with an amp too but they sound cheap and harsh so I wonder whether I should just abandon the standard A-Pillar tweeter-location and go with combined woofer/tweeter speakers (coaxials) in the doors only...

Have you tried to locate the bulbs from behind the bumper? It really couldn't be easier, someone kindly posted a video on how to remove the grill insert, then the light housing and it was as eay as it looked on the vid.

As for the speakers I haven't done anything with them. I rarely mess with the ICE setup (just complain about it) as it really isn't something I know a lot about although I could probably hold my own. Main reason I don't messing is I don't like removing trim and risking a rattle when I tidy up...

Wow. Now if only I had seen them lol. I think they would be too much. ....possibly. saying that though there are only 2 forward facing chips so the rest of the chips would be reflected off the housing. Same forward facing output as the ones I have fitted.

And the lumens of yours is 750 whereas these other ones are only 850 despite them having all those extra CREE LED's so I think you made the right choice. I just hope that a numpty like me can install them without trashing the car :)

I just tried to order these 2x5W Cree bulbs and I emailed the company to double-check for my particular Fabia model and they said I need a 50 watt resistor:-

Hi sorry you will need a 50w resistor also

Customer Support Team

Dear ultra-hids,

Will these fit a 2012 Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSI without any errors?
