DSG or Maunal ?

Hi guys, Just looking to trade to a VRS CR TDi and have the option of 2 one manual and one DSG near enough same price and spec just the gearboxes that separate them i've not yet had chance to drive the DSG but quite fancy one in theory. I'm just worried about the faults i've read about DSG boxes granted not found many on skodas how has your experiences been? would you reccomend one/ buy again or should i stick to manual for peace of mind/ reliability?

Please be gentle its my first post and at the moment a hated BMW driver :blush: which i have loved the last few years but the mrs is doing more and more miles in it for work now and it's just not practical. i'll openly admit i wasn't taken on the idea of a skoda until i had a test drive in a VRS, cracking balance of value for money practicality and great driving fun it really did surprise me, so much so i will own one by the end of the month just looking for a few pointers whilst i'm waiting to get chance to test one myself.

Are you buying from a Skoda dealer ?

If not I would certainly want some security that the DSG was 100%.

I had an Audi A3 with a DSG, and I've switched back to a manual when I bought my vRS. The DSG is by far the best auto box I've driven, but personally I didn't like living with it day-to-day, just too many quirks for me. I think the newer ones are better from what I've heard, but I'm more than happy with my choice of going back to manual for this car. Didn't have any problems with mine (though I did only put 30k miles on it in 4 years from new!).

I had the DSG in a diesel Octy and liked it most of the time. It is brilliant whilst accelerating, but I hated the way it dragged as the car pulled to a stop. It just didn't seem as smooth as a traditional auto gearbox.

The 335 is a fabulous car btw :)

If you like auto boxes then the DSG would be the one to go for. If you prefer manual then stick with that. I test drove the DSG but like others above I was not tempted away from my manual. If I did a lot of stop start driving in a city then I may be tempted but feel I would still miss my manual.

The latest DSG are sooooo much better than the earlier ones. I hate driving a manual now.

DSG is fantastic. Very relaxed / useful around town & with virtually imperceptible, extremely fast changes when pressing on.

I enjoy driving manuals too and do so often at work, but would be unlikely to buy a manual again as double-clutch boxes are so good these days.

My current DSG is smoother & more intuitive than the previous one I had in a GTI.

One thing to bear in mind is the need to change the 'box oil at 40k. £190 when I did so with the Golf. (You might get closer to £100 with an Indy, but £70 of that is for the 7 litres of oil if I remember correctly!)

DSGtastic all the way!!!! was a staunch petrol / manual fan.....not any more the DSG box is brilliant on our very crowded traffic laden roads!! :thumbup: :thumbup: and the CR170 is a peach of a diesel engine!

I always drive manual boxes but interestingly drove a DSG not long ago and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. However, I stayed with the manual box as the intention is to keep the car beyond warranty and the tought of replacing a DSG box outside warranty was too much!

Drive them both, then research the DSG problems fully.

If you decide to buy the DSG then IMO it only makes financial sense whilst it's under warranty and someone else is picking up the huge bill for any replacements that may need doing.

For me, I was not prepare to pay an extra grand for the DSG plus the extra cost to extend the warranty for as long as I owned the car for a box that is not good enough to tempt me away from a manual.

Cheers for all your help guys after some more reading I think I'm sticking to Manual we've never had an auto before either so mrs said she'd prefer to stick to that, so all being well by the weekend 335 will be on a skoda forecourt and a vrs estate will be in the garage I post up some pics and no doubt be asking some stupid questions. I will miss the sheer power and drive of the BMW but I will not miss BMW customer service nor the fuel bill :)

Quite interested in this thread as i'm changing to a DSG too very shortly.

For the posts above that mentions "early" DSG boxes being quirky but later ones are much better....

what year did they improve them and whats worth checking on test drives?

I believe the internals are the same, but as with anything a manufacturer will have a policy of continual improvement so providing you can get the latest box you can afford with the latest software updates then you should be fine.

I also think the DSG is great, only thing comes to mind is parking uphill in tight situation gaps where I found using the handbrake rather than the foot brake to hold it.

Drove a new A3 with DSG yesterday and didn't think it felt much different to my Octy to be honest. The changes might have been a little smoother, but as you come to a stop it still felt a bit grabby.. I am assuming the gearbox is pretty similar to the current Skoda ones.

By the way, the manual box has also improved in my opinion. On my third now and this one (58) is a good bit better than my 2.0 FSi was, and that was less clunky than my Mk. 1 vRS.

Hill hold makes the DSG like a 'real' auto. foot on brake, in D, foot off brake, no rolling back on slopes more than 3% or so, and you have 2 seconds to put your foot on the accelerator. Works better in the DSG than the manual as in a manual the car will roll back, but the DSG car will stay still or creep forward.....

My previous DSG Octavia did not have hill holdemoticon-0149-no.gif. The Yeti doesemoticon-0148-yes.gif.

Actually I would say I managed hill starts better ( without revving or clutch slipping) in any diesel manual I have ever driven, than in the DSG Octavia, I may not be used to her yet but still have not acquired whatever "knack" it takes in 6 months/7500miles.

Deal done all being well collecting black vrs manual estate on Saturday 200 miles away so will test it out on the way home. Thanks again guys
