6th Gear

Featured Replies

At what speed or rpm in 5th gear do you change to 6th gear.. Thanks..

Depends how I'm driving. Quick then 5,000rpm. Just cruising then 60-70mph

Matt

Normally at 60mph

60

126mph for me as I have the old longer box :)

Or 70mph.

60, to preserve the flywheel.

As a very rough guide, I tend in normal driving to use 1st to 10mph 2nd to 20 mph and so on, so sixth at 60mph seems a good plan

As a general rule, I'll use, 1st - 0-10, 2nd - 10-20, 3rd - 20-40, 4th - 40-55, 5th - 55-70. 6th - 70+

Any less than that is silly as I have the long gearbox and the engine starts labouring. Indicated 70mph is 1800rpm.

If on the flat with no gradient, then a high gear is selected without placing the engine into a labouring position.

With such a low torqued engine there is no need to use excessive rev's to get car to cruise or accelerate, so a higher than normal gear

( as opposed to normal cars) can be selected sooner.

If I'm just bowling along and in no hurry I'll be in 6th gear at around 45 as long as I'm using gentle acceleration the engine and gearbox is quit happy, then again I regularly see 55 mpg. In a more spirited mode around 35/40 thousand revs

Low RPM is not the key to good MPG, keeping your speed and throttle input pretty much constant is what does it.

I can drive along in 4th at 50 and see 60mpg no problem.

At such low RPM that being in 6th will give at 45mph, the PD engine will bascially keep overfuelling to maintain the torque of the engine.

That early? I think mine would struggle. That's also a very high revving diesel! Lol

Matt

5,100rpm is when to change....

Next thread will be what way do you get into your car

How do you tie your shoe laces

What toothpaste do you use

Is it just me or are some threads on here absolutely ridiculous. How are people meant to tell YOU how to drive

Rant over no offense to the OP just my opinion

Left foot in first then lower posterior onto the seat

How do you tie your shoe laces

Always the right shoe first

What toothpaste do you use

Colgate - best selling due to its unmatched brand recognition

Nothing wrong with comparing how others drive. Theres plenty of people who dont know/understand how the dmf can be damaged etc

Matt

change when ever you feel like you fancy 6th gear instead of 5th :|

I would change at 60

As been said already

3rd 30mph

4th 40mph

5th 50mph

6th 60mph

That's for "Eco Mode" you may want to forget the above for "Race Mode" ;)

Thanks For your advice people..

Lol @ this.

I think you have enough info here. Everyone drives differently.

If you want to go by the book, it tells you to only use 1st gear to roll the distance of the car so those who say 0-10mph in first might technically be wrong.

At the end of the day you just drive however you want to drive.

1st 30mph

2nd 55mph

3rd 80mph

4th 100mph

5th 125mph

6th 150mph

Should be able to improve on this with the new box. ;)

Are you going for one of the earlier long gearboxes?

I worked out that mine will (if I had the power) do 160 before hitting the rev limiter in 6th :giggle:

Mine might too now, but rev limiter in 6th is tough enough even with way over 200hp.... But yes, geared for something daft like 280 km/h at 4500 revs in top.

It show as over 160mph on your clocks when you hit the limiter in 6th, but is infact a tad under at 157mph IIRC. In fairness, it was only reading a tad over 160mph, id say 162 or 163mph, so not that far out for the speed, a!

Yeah I never did the exact maths, just a bit of mental arithmetic when on cc through some roadworks one day B)
