Pity - I nearly ordered a Superb. Stunning cars! Maybe next time.

The superb was a brilliant car and pretty cheap to purchase to be honest it just didn't make sense to drive around here to long and only me and the missus so dragging the back of the car around with no one in the back was a waste but brill car on motorway though

Further to my post last week, I am away this week on business but dealer sent me an email and they confirmed the update would be the 140 pound price.

I have gone back on email with some comments on the vain of the car is 2 months old and surely the update should be free or at least a lot cheaper than it is.....

Ill keep you posted but wont be able to call them if needed until next week.

Thanks for that just Columbus disc is cheap as chips on eBay

The only ones I can see are £184.99p ?

??? I know it's crazy £130 quid and I've spent about £34.500.00 in the last 5 years on skoda in total 1 superb and 2 fabia's so if this ain't sorted I will definate be looking elsewhere for the new vision d when it comes out!!

£130 is still alot of money for a dealer to just give away. Doesnt matter how friendly your local dealer is they are profit driven at the end of the day and wont want to make a clean loss on anything. Its a bit different when you first buy the car as they are able to give some things away (like mats, lifeshine etc) as they can lose the loss in the margin they have on the car, they'll be prepared to lose more if they are desperate to sell the car but will never want to make a loss on a car.

By giving you a £130 part free and gratis they'll have to find something to lose it against which when you consider how lean some of these dealerships are run isnt an easy thing to do.

I do like OEM Navs but this is one of the major disadvantages to owning one, expensive mapping updates.

Iaye understand they tend not to make a fortune but at the end of the day there are plenty of dealers and manufactures ready to tale my money next time around!

Agreed.

Also for the few of us that have been caught between owning the Admunsen for 1 to 3 months you would think they may bite the bullet and just give us the disk. If these forums are to go by it must be less than a dozen in the uk.

Been reading through this thread and some people really are going OTT.

V7 Maps for Columbus units were released iirc Late Sep 10. This is not the be all and end all of 7 Digit postcode searching. It requires the correct firmware as well (268X and above. It takes a while for this then to filter down through VAG to the dealers. The dealers will only install the disc that is supplied with the car. I have been using a Columbus for 2 1/2 years in both of my Octavias and always managed with 5 digit postcode entry until recently.

You also have to remember that VAG (and other manufacturers) have to licence the 7 Digit postcode database at great cost. It's only when technology (and indeed competitors) moves on and also if they receive enough complaints about a limitiation do they act on it. However this does not entitle everyone to a "free" upgrade.

The units do not Upgrade for free (despite what has been claimed in this thread) you have to purchase a disc (or if you want it free obtain an illegal copy)

Some people may get the upgrade disc as a gesture of good will if say they bought their car in the last 3 months or so. But to sit their and say it's unacceptable to be charged for an Optional upgrade is a bit naive. If the OP's unit really is faulty then it will be replaced under warranty (if one still exists).

I haven't had a TomTom since i got a Columbus, so prices may have changed, but i do remember that i used to pay £30 every 3 months to get the latest map updates or £120 a year. So £130 for an upgrade from a dealer isn't that bad.

But i don't see how someone can expect a free upgrade just because something better has now become available. If they upgraded the Aircon as well would you expect to be called back to the dealer to get a free upgrade??

No would not expect a free upgrade on a/c, over the top ? the sat nav should be compliant with all UK not just urban address, would i have purchased the sat nav if i knew it didnt do 7 digits, hell no! this is not an issue with tom tom £100 UNIT , this is £500 should be informed if its not 100% coverage which it is on the continent, would i have purchsed if i knew you had to pay for upgrade 8 weeks after getting the car hell no!,if they had said so i would have made sure they threw it in,but thy have my cash now so its basically :swear: you, even trading standards said it should conform to a 100% of addresses at the time of sale which is wait for it, SEVEN DIGIT POST CODES!!!!!!!!!

  • 1 month later...

Well after failing with Skoda(via my dealer) to get a free upgrade disk to postcode search and a member kindly trying to help me get this achieved, with both unfortunately not working. I gave up and bought the upgrade disk for £ 125.

Its now fully post code operational and makes life a bit easier. Its a shame it did not come with the car but in the big schemes of things I saved over £ 3,000 with the VAT deal so bit the bullet.

Appreciate all the help from the forum and Seboni121 especially gave me.

Cheers

LOL

One quick question, it also came with the Europe disk (major streets) - can you install both Uk and Europe on the SD card or does one over write the other ? Let me know Seboni if you would

Cheers

The answer is yes it does over write the disc I think it's got more info on it , it's more in depth just overlays the previous disc

I'm new to this forum, but having just placed an order for a Fabia vRS with most of the options ticked, I was concerned over the pages of problems people seem to have with 6/7 digit postcode searches. I asked my dealer to confirm that my car (expected November) will have 7 digit abilities.

So far great service, got an email back with a copy of their Product news updates confirming that on all Fabia and Roomster models built from week 22 (30th May 2011):

Amundsen satellite navigation: It will be possible to enter seven-digit postcodes into the Amundsen satellite navigation system. Map data will also be loaded on to the internal hard drives, rather than being issued on CDs.

Only problem is a circa 5 month wait to get the car!!

It's a good unit although the 5 month wait will drag :'(

Aye time will stop for a wee while, but trust me it'll be worth it, also I think the new Amundsen + will be quicker than the previous model as the hardrive / processor is bigger so will be able to keep up with you if you wear heavy boots! Lol, 5 months may run in 6 or 7 though :) just take up a hobby till it arrives
