Assuming you may have calmed down a bit now...

Sat nav upgrade discs are fairly common though all makes of cars.

£130 is not that much compared to other makes.

If £130 for an OPTIONAL upgrade worries you that much I doubt you'll like any car once you've owned it.

However, if the unit is faulty and genuinely doesn't work correctly then it needs fixing under warranty.

But that still probably won't entitle you to get the latest maps and software for free unless the dealer values your custom.

I'd be happy to pay £130 for my Columbus to get full postcode searches (now available I believe) rather than having to put in the first part and then choose the road.

You not the only one...BMW...Merc etc same prob as the UK is "Special case" in having some of it's post codes running into 7digits!!! This is why it's best not to spec the factory shatnav and get your own tomtom etc!!! as cheaper and better B)

NOW YOU CAN GO BACK TO MAKING A SMOOTH FLAT WALL LUMPY :wall:

I understand what you are saying but should'nt they inform the customer when purchasing that it does not cover the vast majority of the uk?,i have notice that they are suppling this info now and the new units will be pre programmed with 7 digits,although i only recieved my car in feb seriously cannot understand they knew they had a problem with the columbus which i thought they fixed for free,its a bloody joke the car should have been set up for the uk postcode system

the map upgrades via the disc need to place it in the unit and does it automatically,this is free came with a disc but only capable of 6 digits which is ok for the continentals

Please keep us informed if you manage to wear them down as I want to upgrade my Admunsen if post code search now available. I would like it for free, however prepared to pay something if pushed but not £ 130 !

I might ring the dealer and see what I can get out of them and report back.

I understand what you are saying but should'nt they inform the customer when purchasing that it does not cover the vast majority of the uk?

Yes, that does sound like poor form.

I'd expect any UK supplied system to have full UK mapping.

I'd not bother in the first place and buy a tomtom. When you come to sell your car, you can take the tomtom with you! :D

Not sure why the unit doesnt work in its current state - certainly I cant see it not working with the majority of UK addresses?! How is it any different to the Columbus mapping when it only did limited postcode digits? I coped with that for two and a half years just fine in the Octy VRS and I went to some far stretched places too. :yes:

if you have an android phone you could use google maps/navigation.. its free to use (with wifi or 3g etc) my google maps app came with my phone and seems to update once a month atleast, even has "street view" so i can see what my destination looks like before i get there.. i dont know if googles navigation app is on other phone operating systems but i know the maps app is on iphone

Common practice this. Nought wrong with the Amundsen, just doesnt do full post code searches. Columbus didnt either up until fairly recently. Functionality wise many OEM units are lacking functionality of their portable counterparts.

Dealers always charge for mapping updates and its always expensive, one of the many drawbacks of having OEM sat nav. It's for this very reason I've always opted for portable devices like TomTom's, you could buy a half decent one for the price of that update!

So far unit has worked fine for me, but it would be better with Post Codes as well.

I do agree Tom Toms are good but with the VAT free deal I like the intergration of the unit with the Stereo and MDI (as covered under previous posts). Thats why I picked if - not just for the sat nav.

Phoned the dealer this afternoon and he knew what I was talking about but had not heard the Admunsen had an update disk so will get back to me.

Will report once I hear something.

I would not pay for such an updates if I was u.. (u get it for free several places on the net).

dont know if this is the latest for amundsen or not.. (I am not using amundsen)..

I'd advise people against posting links to rip off software sites on BriSkoda as it just makes more work for the Mods.

They usualy get removed pretty quickly...

i agree its a bit cheeky to charge for making the sat nav do what it should have done from day one, map upgardes then fine i'd pay for them but if this is just so it has the ability to use full post codes then its cheeky if not downright rude

I don't mind paying for upgrades if potentially betters the unit , however the disc is not a upgrade but basically a firmware so you can use 7digits it's not an issue for anyone but if you are rural and if you travel into rural areas the majority of these will be 7 digits, to be fair it's a great bit of kit would be better if you could use it everywhere , plus SUK did say that they would sort it out , so John good of customer services shame on you!!, didn't have the decency to call me to let me know had the dealers to do it, I have contacted skoda head office Prague , and tomorrow trading standards not fit for purpose!!, they new there was issues it's a shame , took my sons A3 to get a not and service today , may get rid of this and get the A1?, no I don't think so but if this is not sorted out to my satisfaction, there are plenty of other manufacturers ready to take my money !, all this bad feeling over a crummy disc that cost them pennies to produce

lol :)

You think Audi will be any better?

Garmin and Tom Tom charge for updates, not sure how much but I should imagine its not £130...

Can the disc be used more than once?

Maybe they should charge an upload/upgrade fee rather than selling a disc.

My sentiment exactly not fit for purpose it ain't , this is totally wrong

I much prefer the integrated OEM Navigation over a tomtom for example. The reason, I hate having trailing wires, things stuck to the screen/dash cluttering up the interior. This week I am having to use Tomtom on my iphone because I am in europe driving my dads Fabia and my Superb with OEM columbus is in the UK. Constantly plugging in the tomtom, with all its wires getting in the way is very frustrating, especially when you take into account the power socket location in the Fabia MK2.

Skoda have not provided any Navigation updates for free, even the recent 7 digit postcode entry on the columbus was chargeable but at least we get the whole of western europe on a DVD. £130 is typical for a CD upgrade, and the price has remained fairly constant since the MFD2 nav unit.

Are you sure the £130 isn't for updated maps too? The unit in my mondeo had the same issues and you could only get hold of a firmware update with a new set of maps. Some dealers, who were spoken to nicely I expect, would open a pack up and install the firnware for customers free of charge whilst others didn't have a clue.

By the time I bought it second hand I just downloaded a copy from a forum user and did it myself for the cost of a disc.

At the end of the day it still operates as a navigation unit. Does any of the literature say it provides full post code functionality? If not then I'm afraid that you have no chance with the 'not fit for purpose' argument in my opinion.

Well from what you are saying it's pay up or **** up!,£130 will be for upgrade for whole western Europe

what about asking if anyone on here has bought this and for a nominal fee could you either obtain a copy or take it off their hands as i guess once used its useless or does the dealer keep the disc?

Hi no it's not useless you need to update the system periodically by putting the disk into unit and update automatically if it's ossicle I would make a copy , regardless if it's protected sons a bit of a hacker would break the coding easy

Lol at some of the anger in this thread. Just go back to a good atlas and forget about tw@tnav. My new Fabia will be my first satnav equipped car, and i'm only really buying it for its abilities as a head unit.

A recent trip to Devon saw a number of friends of mine with 7 digit nav devices all floundering in the country lanes

At least those lanes would get me slightly closer to the area than I ever could using my awful sense of direction! :p

We've more specced the Amundsen in the Fabia for it's ability to navigate through MDI as the swing units one line of text makes mdi navugation a pain. If the Fabia had the Bolero as an option I'd have specced that instead.

I use a top of the range tomtom live in my Passat as the traffic hd system is priceless and saves me hours sat in traffic. If I go to work in the Fabia I'll still use the tomtom.

The 6 digit postcode is a pain and not really good enough but forget going with other VAG models as they basically use the same head units although Audi's are packaged a little different.

Skoda use names instead of VW's model numbers.

Swing = RCD 310

Amundsen = RNS 310

Bolero = RCD 510

Columbus = RNS 510

Skoda have released updates as soon as VAG have released updates but the cost of the upgrades seems to depend on what relationship you have with the dealer or agreement with Skoda/VW UK.

Cheers

Lee

I haven't ordered the sat nav with our skoda order because the dealer warned us it did not do 7 digit post codes. I'm shocked they want to charge you £130 for a firmware update.The renault carmanet sat nav in my trafic van update's via a sd card.So far since last december I've had

2 free firmware updates.

1 free map update.

£19 for 18 months worth map updates [at least 6 map updates].

£10 for speed camera updates. :rofl: It really is a great bit of kit.
