Do you call your car a "He", "She" or "It"?

Featured Replies

It has to be said there's been an element of interest on earlier topics regarding what name you attach to the thing, and I do notice that quite a few refer to 'He' or 'She' rather than 'It'.

Certainly, most sea going craft get referrd to as 'She', for whatever reason, but I wonder why would a car be the same. Do lorry drivers call their lorries 'She'? Or fork lift truck drivers......? Or racing cars....? When I was at work we didn't call our fire appliances anything other than 'It'...and very often they were referred to in much less polite terms. Usually at 3 in the morning when it broke down and had to be recovered from a field or scrapyard and a replacement had to be sourced and re-stowed.

It might be that other forums are the same, I don't know. Admittedly the fact that the Yeti has a kind of animate name (as opposed to inanimate, I suppose) might contribute...assuming you believe there is such an animal as a Yeti and it's not ficticious, in which case, is it actually animate?).

None of this is of any significance and it doesn't keep me awake at night, but I'm just asking really.

Mine is a he. A "Monster" can't be a she surely?

It may be a very impressive vehicle, but it's still an "it". Or "the Yeti" as we have a few Skodas.

Harvey is usually referred to as a"The",as in "The Yeti".

"lettie" the yeti is mine.

"lettie" the yeti is mine.

Mine is called Ivor, but only when he gets mentioned on here.

When we're (kitten and I) out and about or with family friends, we use 'it' or 'the car' or 'the Yeti'.

Usually referred to as a"The",as in "The Yeti".

I have found that over the years I always end up calling my car -

" the most expensive pain up the A#R#S# E"

I have never understood this type of anthropomorphism.

IT'S A JUST CAR FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!!

The defining word being "it".

A car's a car and a bike is a bike. So for me it is either the Yeti, the FJR, the BMW or your pushbike, my pushbike or the New Hudson.

Note... I only own one four wheel vehicle.

My other half can be a Monster and she is a "She" emoticon-0144-nod.gif

You have clearly never met any of my 4 mother in laws!

... and pretty much all my cars have been 'she'. 'Vera the VR6', 'Sexy Suzy Sprite', 'Bessie the Beemer' etc. Perhaps it's because I've also always been a sailor and get used to naming boats.

I hate giving cars gender.

It will always be 'the yeti" to me.

I call her She but her kennel name is White Queen. Have never called a car anything before so she must be special.

In italian I say "La yeti" (female).

In italian I say "La yeti" (female).

So in French it would be " Le Yeti " emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Interesting national characteristics at play here - cars are female in French, neuter in German, female in Italian, male in Spanish. That's the limit of my linguistic capability: any advance?

Not really except to say I couldn't bring myself to to call it anything other than...IT! I might well like the thing but the term 'Her' just doesn't sound remotely right for me. 'Him' is marginally less unacceptable because in a humurous sort of way it's a Yeti and I sort of associate it with a big, furry, mythical, mysterious beast....but it's still a car....a lump of tin and plastic (that costs us a fortune to buy, tax, insure, maintain and lose money re. depreciation) OK there will be those that say their women cost them a fortune to run, maintain etc. etc. but I'm not suggesting that for myself :) (BTW, I was joking at the end).
