dash squeek... solved at last! i hope!

Featured Replies

Thought I would bring this thread back, as I now have a HUGE rattle coming from the passenger side dash. It is annoying me so much that I have resorted to searching Autotrader for a replacement. I have upgraded the stereo equipment in the car, but I can hear this rattle even with the stereo turned up.

I don't have time during the week to be poking and prodding the dash, it's dark by the time I get home from work at night, it's too cold at the weekend and I can't be bothered with all the hassle of taking the car into the dealers so I would REALLY appreciate any advice/experience from folks who have had similar troubles.

Is it that bad?? :(

  • if its the dash on the passenger side, I had the same problem, I cured it by opening the door, removing the plastic snap in end panel and you will see a mounting point where the dash is fastened to th

I think I cured the side panel squeak and now mine rattles/squeaks from the dash trim panel just above the glovebox. I love my car but this problem really is driving me nuts now. I plan to take it apart when the weather is a little warmer to try and see what the problem is. I don't really want to do it while it's all so cold as plastics tend to be brittle to work with. I think I'll need to drop the glovebox to get the problem.

Well, got home last night after 6 so it was dark and freezing but got the tools out.

On another thread on here people have been talking about a hex-head screw that becomes visible once the passenger-side dash panel is removed, posts have talked about tightening it up, others say loosen it a few turns works for them, well I decided to remove the bugger completely and dash rattle is gone!

I'll probably accelerate up a hill at some point in the future and the passenger side of the dash will swing round to meet me, but i'll worry about that when it happens :D

So annoying though that so many of us have had dash rattles on a car that is supposed to be a quality product nowadays.

Did you find you only get this when the car is cold? I have had it for about 2months now and it is doing my head in. Really loud rattle as if the inside of the glove box has imploded or something.

I have taken the side piece off and put it back on and it seems to have gone for the moment but in no way can i see how removing one piece of plastic would stop a noise like that!

Also the rattling from the rear is doing my head in. Sounds like the parcel shelf but i am not so sure. I am going to get some foam draft excluder and stick it on the parcel shelf holders and see if this cures it. Spoils an awesome car, things like this.

I have a massive rattle coming from the rear. I've taken out the parcel shelf, spare wheel, tools etc and it still going.

I had the shocks and springs replaced a month or 2 ago, but I'm now at the point where I'm thinking it must be something else mechanical and not a rattle as such from the interior. Does my head in though!!

Amen to that. As I've said elsewhere on this forum I've never had a car with so many rattles rear and dash. I wonder if VW and SEAT suffer the same?

 to that comment

I had the whole dash replaced in my 03 Polo in an attempt to cure rattles (and i am talking 7-10 rattles at anyone time). In the end i Part ex'd it after 18months of issues (Got the print outs from an other dealer on the job history and £4k was spent just in parts alone).

My 2007 Golf GT TDi PD140 had the odd rattle, nothing that drove me quite as crazy as this one though. I have to say that I was disappointed with the build quality of the VW, I had high expectations of VW.

Annoyingly the Octavia VRS that I had my test drive in was really quiet leading me to believe these were well built. There's nothing like living with a car to find out the whole story! I'm starting to dream about a C class which is ironic as the latest facelifted model looks really similar to the Octavia.

Test drive blinkers block all negative things like rattles out sadly!

Remove the rear side bolsters and put back in, sometimes they are not firred properly, also are the lugs back up and red. Sometimes, when my kids were young they would reach for the seatbelts and inadvetantly press them down to release the seat, it was still in place but squeeked till dropped forward and slammed back in place

Do the bolsters just pull off? The seat backs have been slammed and re slammed believe me!

How do you remove the rear side bolsters?

Dunno if this will help anyone if they have a rattle in this area, but i've got a vibration noise at certain speeds coming from the metal clip just behind the ashtray in the centre of the dash. I can probably fix it by wedging something plastic or paper in between the clip and the plastic of the console as I think it's just the rivet that's loosened a bit, but it took me a little while to track down.

Others on here might find the same and it may save them some time hunting, that's all. :smirk:

Well i have removed the offending bolster but it now wont go back on correctly (think it was knackered anyway!). You have to slide it down and it releases from the metal loops on the body. You can then remove it. I have gaffer taped around the metal loops and will test later and will book it in for a new bolster at some point when i can get to a dealer.

I had the passenger side rattle / squeak from new. I removed and replaced the side dash panel countless times and even added some sticky pads which seemed to work for a while but the noise kept returning. I got the dealer to look at it at service time and the tech knew of a problem with cables rubbing inside the windscreen pillar. He taped up the cables and I have not heard a squeak since.

Well my dash squeek has come back again, just as bad as it was before. You will see above that I thought I had this cured, by completely removing the screw with the hex-head that is visible once you remove the passenger-side dash cover.

I removed this screw on Tuesday evening, went for a drive and the squeek had completely gone, drove about loads of places yesterday and no squeek, got in the car this morning to come to work and it squeeked like f**k the whole way into work, audible even with the stereo turned up.

I pulled the side cover off the dash again when I got to work and had a quick root around, the squeek seemed to be coming from the actual dash itself, i.e. not a component - when I pushed and prodded the actual plastic the dash is made out of was squeeking loudly.

I am now at a complete loss as to what to do about it, apart from get it booked in to the dealership I bought the car from, which is 20+ miles in the opposite direction from my place of employment, I am supposed to be at work at 8:30am, will need to organise a courtesy car of some description, then leave work early again once the car is "fixed" to return the courtesy car and pick up mine. Hassle Hassle Hassle.

To say I am annoyed would be an understatement, I didn't spend 18K to have to put up with this horse****.

I stopped my squeak once again

So much happier with driving the car now. Turned out it was the pesky dashboard screw again behind the side cover. I put cardboard between the plastic molding and the mount and also under the washer on the screw. The noise has definitely gone. I really thought it was the dash itself making the noise, the slightest push on the end of the trim just above the glove box would make it squeak, undoing the screw stopped it.

I think the noise is created by plastic against metal, complete removal of the screw won't stop them rubbing together. It was so simple I could kick myself for not dealing with it sooner. :giggle:

Do the bolsters just pull off? The seat backs have been slammed and re slammed believe me!

This had my head wrecked for ages, I found that the catch you press to release the seat actually rattles. It seemed to be okay for a while after seat back was locked into position, but it's as if the release mechanism settles and has a part that rattles inside. Cardboard inserted above release catch worked for me.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mine is going in on Friday for a really annoying loud rattle which has materialised since the recent service and recall work. It does it from 45mph and by gum it's driving me potty.

  • 5 months later...

I took the glovebox out (5 or 6 Torx screws) and the only loose thing I found was this metal clip that comes from the middle of the 3 torx screws along the top of the glovebox.

I have tried various things, but I decided to remove it and the rattle has completely gone

my car is in at the end of the month for 'dash squeekyness'.... I get the feeling this thread might become useful :D thanks

Apparently this is the offending area on passenger side.

That picture isn't from the MkII Octavia, maybe the MkI?

It illustrates the point well though. As recommended earlier in this thread I copper slipped the threads on all four (or five) T20 screws.

All quiet so far...

Yes its the MK2 thats shown on ElsaWin.

My dash doesn't have that round vent on the top. Also the hole in the end panel to feed the side window vent is missing.

The curveture of the dash near the facia vent looks very MkI which threw doubt on to it being the MkII.

The screw locations are different to my car too...
