Now then, just to follow on from a very interesting Yeti owners age thread how about a Yeti owners profession one? I will start with my lacklustre career: 25 years as a mechanic followed by 20 years as a dairy machinery and vehicle mender. Retired early and not missing it one tiny bit!:)

Blimey, after seeing all these high falutin jobs I'd better make mine sound better!;) The first 25 years were spent as a motor vehicle technician working on a huge variety of vehicles large and small but primarily Rootes/Chrysler and Mitsubishi. In 1991 I was approached by one of my commercial vehicle customers to set up and run a fleet workshop and dairy plant repair facility at his premises and after much sole searching and considering the offer of virtually doubling my income the decision was made.

So for the next 20 years I expanded my knowledge by a huge amount and the variety of skills I gained was absolutely unbeliveable from sorting out the office computers, laboratory equipment and planning bottling plant layouts and maintenance, to preparing and organising HGV operator licencing, testing and servicing. I decided early last year that being on virtually 24/7 call (often at 3am!) enough was enough so last August took early retirement and took a trip from east to west across the states in celebration B) I now work a couple of days a week helping out a mate with his engineering supplies company and stress levels have diminished

SWMBO has kept me in the manner to which I'd become accustomed although she joins me soon in retirement.

That sounds a little better doesn't it

Eight years working for a leading High Street Bank, followed by 11 years working for a coach holiday operator, followed by 11 years in Local Government, followed by six years consultancy.

Last four years heading up a local bus company (part of a global company) with 120 buses and around 260 staff.

With the current economic climate and constant pressure to drive down costs, there's very little fun left.

Picked up a Master of Science degree in Transport Management and a PCV driving licence along the way and just finished a basic teaching course with the idea of having an escape route!

After my A levels... One year driving a sandwich van, two years stacking shelves in Tesco, three years running my own small garage because I couldn't see me getting a well paid job followed by eleven years running my own small transport business. Started with 6 minibuses in 2000 and now have 101. I love it.

29 years as a Civil Engineer (Highway Engineer) with Cumbria County Council, the latter few years being the Section's IT manager. Retired at 50 !! (somewhat political right now !!)

Oh - and since retirement I have been teaching the flute.

20 years in secondary schools as an English teacher, eventually headteacher of 2 schools, then local authority advisory work, a short period of self-employed consultancy and finally 7 years as one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools. Allegedly retired about three and a half years ago, but still doing consultancy work in the UK and Europe - I suppose about one or two days a week on average.

All career in the ****, Sewage works chemist, followed by assistant area manager, finally Divisional Controler sludge to land(the lumpy stuff after treatment)

made redundant after first ofwat shakeout in '94, early? pension etc

Worked as a Technician in Design Technology section of a local High School for 6 years then started to enjoy life about 11years ago!

Now in early '60's

More than 40 years in international sales, design and installation of process equipment. Always technology transfer across national and cultural boundries from locations in the UK, Holland, USA and lastly here in Denmark. Now retired since late last year.

Entered first stage of retirement today after 33 years as Sales Manager and Director in the pattern card industry selling pattern card design and production UK and Europe to vinyl, textile, paper, leather, wallcovering and mountboard manufacturers/distributors. Basically printed cards with bits of product showing all available colours and finishes, stuck on by specially designed mounting machines. On a retainer for consultancy as required!

Pretty narrow market only two companies in UK and worked for both of them probably could say I am Europes leading authority on pattern cards!!!! Sad or what.

Going fishing this afternoon Yippeeee!

26 years in the gas industry responsible for high pressure transmission and for storage. 10 years consultancy. Now retired. No - I do not fix cookers!!

28 years as a civil engineer working on and around the canals, 2wd Yeti is ideal to access the muddy bits as they tend to be flat and muddy!

Before that I am almost ashamed to say I was part of the M25 design team for the M1 and A41 junction areas, and we knew the road would be overloaded as soon as it opened, yet under the Highway Agency rules at the time were not allowed to design for the extra generated traffic. We only put 2 lanes in under the M1! (I think it has been widened since, but I escaped to Yorkshire before that section was built and have only reluctantly ventured South a couple of times in the last 28 years)

I'm an Illustrator and have worked for the last 5 years with a company called WeeWorld which is based in Glasgow. It's a avatar builder/social networking site that is I suppose a kind of Facebook jnr. It's mainly used by kids in America but is growing ever bigger. I have also recently been involved in producing some character costume animations for a new Horrible Histories virtual world that will be launching very soon. All in all it's a great job and I can't complain although quite often do.

I clicked on your weeworld link; but it wasn't what I was looking for...

Sorry, I can't quite figure out your comment. I'm assuming it's humorous but it's a 'wee' bit too cryptic for me. :wonder:

Did an electrical engineering degree and teaching quali in maths and science. Was maths teacher then worked offshore then did maths teaching again (mad or what !!). Took early retirement and did a few seasons as ranger with RSPB. Now returned to roots and fix electrical probs for old cars, bikes etc as a hobby. (Struggling with CANBUS though!!)

After A levels, four years as a glorified Solicitor's clerk in local government. Hated it, so went back to school to study for a BSc in Economics. Emerged in 1981 with every prospect of joining Thatcher's dole queue :( , until someone suggested training to be a teacher :giggle: . In those days no fees to pay, and the student grant was more money than the dole, so why not? Discovered I actually enjoyed the job. Taught Economics and Politics for about 8 years, becoming Head of 6th form along the way. Next logical career move, deputy head, but that seemed to be going back to admin/office type role which really isn't my thing  . Fancied a break anyway, so went to Switzerland (Verbier), and then France (3 Valleys), for a couple of years, initially cooking, cleaning, driving a minibus and other odd jobs in a ski chalet while training to become a ski instructor B) . Ran out of money  so back to the UK to teach for a few more years, back out to France to teach skiing for 3 years B) (Val D'Isere, Chamonix) and knackered my knees :( , so back home to do an MA in International Development. Then wrote a successful funding proposal to DFID to set up and run an educational project with a Development Education Centre, working with schools and teacher training institutions around the country before drifting back to university to begin work on a PhD (still unfinished) :dull: . For the past 8 years have been the course leader for a PGCE (teacher training) course ... so I teach teachers and write journal articles, materials for educational websites, books on education blah blah blah. Never had a 'career plan' in my life, just go with the flow ... was hoping to retire in the next few years, but the government seem determined to screw up my pension!
