Dashboard Instrument Lighting

Featured Replies

So, it would appear my dashboard lighting doesn't work.

Basically, any green lights - instrument dials, back lighting for

the light switches, lights behind A/C controls, cigarette lighter

surround.

All the dials and warning lights work, so I'm guessing nothing

major there. It has been suggested it is a fuse problem -

however, had a look at the fuse box diagram and I'm damned if

I can figure out which one would be for the instrument lighting.

So can anyone point out which one it is? Or where there might

be another fuse? Or just any ideas (hopefully relevant)... ;)

Thanks,

Rob.

Rob,

the fuse layout in the manual is a real pig to work but here's how you do it.

Basically you 've got to look at the page from behind i.e. on the other side then it'll map.

Sorry can't be anymore help than that but that's how I worked it out.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Adrian,

Yeah, I found it pretty disorientating when I changed the fuse for the cigarette lighter.

However, looking through the list of descriptions, I can't see one for instrument lighting, or

anything similar! Unless that's what "Radin" is...

Rob.

sorry rob sh1tty answer but pullthem all one by one till you find the burnt out one...

- make sure the ign is off as if you ppull the airbag one you will get a fault code (i believe)

Could it be Fuse 15 (5A) described as Instrument cluster, auto gearbox etc? 4th row from top, 3rd fuse from left. Give it a try.

Denis - I did think of that one, but I'd think that if that had gone none of the instruments would

work either?

I'll give it a look though... :D

Rob.

You could try fuse no. 11 - Dash panel insert, selector lever lock solenoid (automatic gearbox)

Talking of fuses..

Fuse no. 17, according to the handbook, is "Police". What's that for, then?

Wondered the same thing KLB. :D

Will have a look at 11 too, though again, I'd have thought if the light wasn't working none of

the A/C controls would either...

Rob.

they should work as they are mechanical arent they?

  • Author

Well, yes, you'd be able to twist them, but I'd've thought that without electrics nothing would

happen when you did. Unless that would be on a different circuit.

Argh, I'd give my right arm for a Haynes manual. I wouldn't be able to use a screwdriver, but

at least I could tell someone the right thing to do...

Good idea though... :D

Rob.

instument lighting hasn't really got its own fuse i had a similar case a little while back and it turned out to be cigar lighter fell to bits shorting out instrument lights new lighter instrument lights working again also you could try the instrument lights adjuster (the one next to headlight switch).

...I hope that this isn't a case of... redface.gif

PS Must take my car out in the dark one day to see if the lights work.....

I had this problem a month ago, I checked all the fuses but it was a waste of time , they traced the fault at the garage to a broken dashboard dimmer switch.

It took them a day to order the part and 5 minutes to fix all under warranty.

rob we can swap the switch with mine on sat - see the the prob follows the switch

Thanks for the help guys - I'm thinking it could be a short relating to the "illumination" pin on

the back of the head unit.

I did try wiggling the dimmer switch to check it wasn't that I'd dimmed it... ;)

Paul - cheers, hopefully swapping the switches will be a last resort though! :D

Rob.

well we have a resource of bits to "swap and try" till we find the fault if needs be. What time are we starting?
