New LR Defender concept

Featured Replies

One of the news sites suggested this could have been the result of a night of passion between a Defender and an Evoque. Personally I think a large white furry creature might have been involved...

I think you're right there Mark emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Looks quite nice really emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

Shame its only a 2 door version.

I have to say I am looking forward to what Land Rover do with the next Defender.

Having had several and being a fan for many years, they have a tough job on their hands replacing such an iconic vehicle.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :giggle::thumbup:

A few more details here;- http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/271927/new_land_rover_defender_revealed.html?CMP=NLC-Newsletters&uid=3fc73b3c63b88c1f427c64b9d88c8561

Now; will all those former Freelander owners that have move over to Yeti be moving back? ;)

PS: it looks far too 'posh' to be the utilitarian vehicle that the Defender has been for use by Farmers, the Military et al and where do they get those wheels/tyres from, definitely of no serious use in the jungle!

Looks good but the thing to look out for is the price. LR seem to be moving to selling only at luxury goods prices.

Their original reputation for go anywhere infinitely repairable vehicles is now (but for the defender) lost in shag pile.

I like the look in profile. Amazing how similar to the Yeti it is though, like a hardcore 4x4 version.

Just shows what a trend setter the Yeti is.

Gerry McGovern has clearly been influenced by the Yeti design - that window setup is Yeti pure and simple. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Skoda must be well pleased that Landrover, the firm that invented the whole idea of an offroader that you can use on the road, thinks that the Yeti 'look' is the way forward.

Just wonder whether former Defender buyers will take to this new look.

'The car has been confirmed for launch in 2015'

Even given that that's presumably a first estimate and liable to variation (but which often translates into delay), it's quite a way into the future. Who knows what the compact 4x4 landscape will look like by then?

But yes, I like the chunky looks too. My concerns would be whether a new Defender is going to advance sufficiently in the way of (on-road) performance and refinement. Isn't it still going to be a vehicle that majors on robustness and off-road use rather than being a head-on competitor to the relatively fast (CR170 anyway) and comfortable, predominantly on-road Yeti?

Yes, if it's not the most off-road biased vehicle in the line up they'll have trouble selling it... unless (shudder) they are just aiming at the trendy crowd. Which is pretty much the direction most of the other Land Rover models have taken.

I like it. Looks great in my book and I can see the pick-up version in there, the lwb five door, the double cab pick-up or whatever other version the current Defender is made as... Some might think it will cost more but have you looked at current Defender prices?! £27,000 for a bare bones 3 door?!!? That is NOT cheap. So build this with some more common platform bits in India and voila you have a FAR cheaper LR than the labour-intensive-to-build Defender could ever dream of.

I like it too & before I read the post though, thought how Yeti like it looked.

From the side it reminds me of many of the japanese HiLux/Warrior etc at the front.

It kind of looks business like but with a more up to date style.

I can see where the shape has been taken from the old defender and updated.

Just think old VW beetle compared to new one.

I reckon by the time it comes to production those alloys will have gone in favour of more rubber on the sidewalls for better comfort and off road ability.

Wonder what the back looks like and if it has the iconic drop down tailgate?

That would be a clear indication of who the car is aimed at.

Overall I like it.

It looks like the Kia Soul. Not my first choice of shape. :(

Looks good - nice and rugged.

Suspect the back end is hinged with the spare wheel - as others have said not sure which bits will exactly transfer into the final production car.

That back door & spare wheel would be good on the Yeti

Nice looling, the waist-up and the front looks remarkably similar to the Yeti!

Discovery double chassis?

This concept is very much like yeti.

I mean the shape and line of the windows.

Land rover wants to steal something from yeti or eventually yeti can steal something from Land Rover.

In conclusion I love harder my yeti... ;)

I agree with Malcy, looks like a Kia Soul that has had "some work done" down the plastic surgeons.

Yip Kia Soul / Nissan Cube looking to me!

And the Defender is not a cube?!

Look at the floating roof, the round headlights, the small indicators, the mirrors, the blunt upright tail... there are quite a few styling cues in the new Landie from the old. As well as from any square cube like vehicle out there. Yes and that includes the Nissan Cube! :giggle:

This picture is like the old car produced in Romania... ARO.

:D

I don't have Photoshop so I quickly did this in PowerPoint. (So apologies for how it looks, but you get the gist of it!) The five door New Defender:

Very Yetiesque

Fundamentally I can't criticise it because it has good dimensions, but it looks like a Yeti and the front is a not quite right yet.

7/10 so far and good on LR for breaking cover with the 1st attempt at the Defender replacement.

Going to keep an eye on this as LR did a great job with the Evoque.

AH! Someone did a proper job! I think it is too long though. Prefer the more Yeti-esque proportions of the one I did above.
