Bottoming out !

Featured Replies

:( Last year I was on holiday driving around Cornwall and drove down this small valley with a small stream at the bottom of it and sure enough the stream had a small hump back bridge (over use of small I think) anyway guess who drove over it with one allmighty BANG ! when stopping 100yds up and removing the loose plastic underskirt and sidepanels (shatterd) there was a small dent in the lowest part of the aluminium sump. Still driving it around but what other damage could it have caused and what do you sugest I check further ?

hit the bottom of my car(previous focus) on a speed bump in a little village, bloody great thing, came round a corner at the speed limit and all of a sudden there was a massive square speed bump in the middle of the road, one of those cobbled type ones and all of a sudden BANG!! dunno what i hit on teh car but i just carried on and the car went fine so i didn't really care

get the tracking/camber checked, else the tyres may be the next new buy on your list

Ive had my octavia for about two months now and must have hit the under side of the car at least a dozen times now (no damage to date). Its easy to forget how low the car sits. I now know to take it easy and always keep an eye out for raised areas in the road.

I think the worse things are them speed humps which are spaced into three smaller ones, i aim the car at the middle one so as to pass the whole hump under the car, but no matter how low they look theres always a scrape (i dont do this anymore).

Ive now come to the conclusion that octys have to take speed humps very slowly :thumbdwn:

Get the sump checked, sometimes when hit they can damage the sump bung as its the lowest part, then they crack and leak, or at the least make it very difficult to drain the oil.

:) The visable damage seems to be near the sump plug with an indentation on a bit that sticks down and is about 6" wide but there is no oil leaking, I was wondering if it could have damaged the engine mounts how can I check them ?

I caught the front bumper on the rise of a dip while diving down a back alley, scratched the hell out of the underside of the bumper, but it stayed on thankfully. I have heard lots of stories that contain: taxi drivers, speed humps and sumps (no offence taxi drivers)

but take solace; I was at the dealers the other day having a general "chit-chat", got told about a Occy VRs driver who hit some scrap iron at speed on a carriageway, ripped off the sump and the gearbox, leaving a huge gouge right down the centre of the underside.

Obviously a write off, but after much arguing and tooing-and-frowing with the insurance company and driver, it was repaired at great expense (in excess of 10k), and to the dislike of the garage.

Apparently it had a few rattles when he got it back

Sorry if the owner of said Vrs is reading this.

Surely if it cost

i mullered my sump the other week on a speed bump, scratches on the bottom but it cracked the back of it. no damage to sump plug but oil all over the bloody floor. fixed now, it got welded by a local engineering firm

Surely if it cost

I got so naffed off with it (having "broken" 2 sumps) that I have a Skoda engine and gearbox guard fitted. Makes a lovely "clang" when you hit stuff. :D

Its about 5mm thick and made of metal :D

yupp. me too, cracked the sump when I took on an "invisible" (night and dark) speed bump at around 40-50 km/h. Loud bang and that was that. The garage told me that I dind't crack it on the speed bump but rather on the landing after the speed bump . They could tell by no scraping on the sump just a long crack. They also told me that it is really common, specially on the TDI's since the sump is lower than on the petrols.

That new sumpguard is really though. I took on another "invisible" speed bump a couple of months ago, albeit only in 35 km/h, made a loud clang and only managed to scrape the thing, not even dent it...

Years ago I was in a road rally in my 2-litre Vitesse. I was proceeding "at some speed" :D when I encountered an unexpected humpback bridge  We flew for some distance.........then landed in a shower of sparks. The sump on the Vitesse was well protected by the chassis (separate chassis, of course) so no damage to the sump

Trouble was the force of the landing cracked the diff casing :thumbdwn: We only discovered this a few miles further on when I overtook another car and in his headlights noticed we were leaving a huge smoke pall

We stopped at the next control and as soon as I got out of the car I could smell the unmistakable odour of EP90 hypoid oil. When I got under the rear of the car i discovered a huge hole in the diff casing and oil everywhere including over the silencers and exhaust.

I filled the diff with Molyslip and stiffed the hole with paper towels. We got the 50 miles home OK. :):)

Yes - It is on my wish list that they actually make these type of bumps the same height, since there's always one along the same stretch of road that catches the car

I tend to go over them one wheel on, one wheel off - probably doesn't do a lot for the tyres (or passengers!) but does save the undercarriage.

A guy I know always goes over full-width bumps diagonally (and, yes, very slowly). I guess he's worked out the precise location of vulnerable undies.

These guards then - I've got a Furby vRS and depending on cost I may consider fitting it/them.

Any chance of posting some price info/part no/pics of it/them please ? :)

price was around

:) What parts would I need for a Ocy 2000 110bhp TDi h/b sump guard, and how much would it all cost, when it happened I went to the dealers to find out the prices for the 2 side bits of plastic and the large undercover, I think the side ones were about

Hmmm... I'm thinking I might have to look into whether I can get something like this to replace my plastic under tray, which has "just a couple" of battle scars now!! (daily bottoming out :()

:) Any part numbers to quote to the dealer for the ocy 2000 TDi 110bhp H/B and approx cost ? before I smash the sump in.

For the Octy:

The dealer needs to look at the Extras section, then section 0 18 018-05 of Etka so he can see what it is (most deny all knowledge of the part).

The parts for the diesel Octy can be found here

You ain't seen me, right slideOff2.gif

As for the funny little car aka Fabia:

Parts diagram is here

:bump:

It's not that slow - although in the 10 mile traffic jam this morning it was  - no chance of it bottoming out though ;)

When I bought my Subaru as a repairable write off it had the Oil Filter ripped off, also a smashed steering rack, Broken rear drive shaft, 2 trashed wheels, the front & rear bumbers missing.

Aparently it bottomed out after launching off a hump back at high speed, I think thats whats called "doing it in style" Anyway prooved a very cheap way of getting a Scoob
