  • all this trouble with rear wipers, buy a Greenline and your rear wiper will never fail, coz you don't get one

Mine is acting up now. A few times i noticed it going slow and groaning and sometimes it will stop half way and then can suddenly work ok for a while.

deffo on its way out mate.

Out of interest, has anyone's rear washer stopped working along with their wiper or are other peoples cars that are experiencing wiper failures still able to squirt their rear window?

And another one -- I had to replace the motor a couple of weeks ago.

It seems that the cause of failure on mine was the deterioration of the seal within the wiper unit, allowing screenwash to fill the motor casing. When I took the old unit out, I opened it up,and found it literally full of screen wash.

Screen washer works normally when the motor fails --it's not actually part of the wiper motor as such -- the screen wash literally goes theough a hollow pipe from where the flexible pipe attaches to the nozzle outlet on the other side. It should be sealed with rubber O-rings, but if these break down, then the fluid gets inside the motor.

Biggest bit of fun isn't changing the motor -- that's a doddle. It's getting the boot trim back on!

Mike

Funny you say that, i have noticed lately the water spray was weak so maybe it's going inside the motor..

I would rule out a blocked nozzle before condemning the motor. Just pull the plastic cover off the base of the wiper arm, and pull the nozzle off. Blow through and clean in hot water before refitting. I can't see this being the motor if the wiper itself is still working OK.

MIke

No, my motor is acting up also. Sometimes it goes slow and groans and might even stop and then later start up again. I thought maybe if pressure is coming out low maybe it was going inside motor hence why it's going faulty. Must have a look tomorrow.

Definitely seems to be a seasonal thing! My rear wiper packed up mid-wipe on Friday afternoon halfway across the screen. I think I'll have a go at getting a replacement and changing it over.

Any top tips on doing the job - especially getting the boot trim off (and back on again) without breaking anything?

Happy new year all :)

Edit: This gives a few tips, can't find the oringinal though: Rear windscreen wiper

Not wishing to rub salt in the wound, but my part (new rear motor) was ordered on Thursday and had a call today to say its arrived. Fitting on Friday.

Damn you!! you must have took the last one haha :giggle:

Interestingly, mine went last week too. It's a very long story, but the symptom was that everytime I turned the steering wheel to the left, the rear wiper came on. Very strange indeed, its operation other than that was fine. It's all been fixed now, but a mighty strange symptom!

What parts did they replace?

For the benefit of others do you know if this was a wiper/motor fault or a steering wheel / switch / wiring issue?

Despite me suggesting it could be the rear motor, as I had seen the issues on this forum, they diagnosed a steering column control unit. Once this had been ordered and fitted they realised it was nothing to do with that and looked again at the rear washer motor. Water ingress had caused the pcb to short out and this in turn had very wierdly caused the wiper to come on when the steering wheel was being turned. All in all, very strange! They had kept a part in stock, due to the common nature of this problem. As soon as the motor was replaced, problem has been solved.

Funny thing is, I did the same a few months back when there was a shortage of aircon compressors. Mine got ordered a day after someone and arrived weeks before theirs. If only the dealer's customer service skills were as good as their parts ordering skills!!

Mine is being replaced tomorrow under warranty.

Glad it went when it did as my warranty runs out in 2 weeks!

woop woop mines get done on Monday

When I first had mine from new (56 plate) I noticed that when you opened the boot water ran inside the rear screen from the seal to the top of screen when elevated . So water was getting in, took it to the dealers and they replaced the seal under warranty, they said they had a few go like this. I always keep an eye out for the seals since it happened to me on a Fiat Brava. That motor I stripped down and sprayed with wd40 and freed up the mechanism and then ok. Yes getting the boot panel and lighning up is a real pain( in more ways than one) Mike, but the Bravo one, they had bonded the rear glass to it so you have to smash it to get it removed, Took one and a half hours! parts department had them in as they went through 15 a week! If someone like Autoglass removed the screen , they too had to smash the panel. Afterwards a 2 min job to remove.I wrote to customer services to say a design procedure flaw, they did not admit it but I got my money back on the panel

Seems like it's rear wiper motor season, reading through all of these!

Add another one to the list - mine! :swear:

Will have to track one down from a breakers. Don't really feel like giving £80 to the dealer for a new one....

Got mine replaced...its now much more nosier than before and the trim wasnt fitted back properly, oh yeh and i have been told there is a fault with the rain sensing wipers and a front left speaker issue as well as the knocking noise (possible steering rack) and the dmf issue.

I have had enough of the car and sourced its replacement just need to talk figures.

Yep, it's the removal and re-fit of the trim that's worrying me!

Bad times on your Octy mate - you really have got a Friday afternoon car haven't you?! What next then?

Friday afternoon and monday morning in one lol, and yet when its working fine its bloody good and handles great.

Tip for easy replacement -- drop the rear seats, and get into the boot, and offer the trim to the hatch with the hatch shut. It's much more of a normal angle to tackle it, and if you line the top edge up with the grooves in the trim around the rear window that aren't disturbed, and click the clips back into place here, the rest are all in line just to press into position.

Mike

Excellent guide will need to try this tomorrow to fit mine properly.

Yep, cheers for that Mike.
