The Fabia VRS MPG Test

Featured Replies

So.. The previous VRS got a cult following for being 'different' with its diesel engine.

I know some MK1 Fabia owners have been disappointed by the lack of diesel VRS this time round, so, in light of the silly mileage I'll be doing for the next few months I decided to do a test.

Last week, as I posted in another thread, I did my jaunt from Gloucestershire to North Yorkshire. 220 Miles in total, and a good mix of Local roads at both ends of the trip, 2,3 and 4 lane motorway (M5, M40, M42, M1, A1M, M16 and depending on the Sat Nav M62 on my return home!), Decent quality A roads (A64 single and dual carridgeway) and all in all, a pretty decent length drive !

Last Monday I set the cruise at 70, and did the trip in 4 hours 1 minute, getting 48.8 miles to the gallon.

Today, I redid the trip, across the same route, leaving at the same time of day, roughly the same temperature... all that guff. Cruise was set at 60 this time. I did the trip in 4 hours 22 minutes, getting 56.8 miles to the gallon.

I'd mentioned in a previous thread on here that I recon'd I could get 60mpg on the route doing cruise at 60, I recon if I drop to 56 and slipstream a lorry this would definitely be achievable.

I'm actually really tempted to do the trip with cruise at 80 to show how much extra fuel that uses and how much time it saves.

Will I do it? who knows. Did I do it because I was bored? definitely.

Whats it shown. Unsurprisingly, speed impacts your MPG (no ****), but actually, even over a huge distance, you don't save much time.

Edit - Worth mentioning the car has jsut past 3000 miles. Its fantastic that a car that can do 0-60 in sub 7 seconds has this sort of fuel economy. I'd risk saying with the remap if i redid the same route I might squeeze that 59-60mpg on the route.... oh, and then have 0-60 in sub 6 ;)

that mpg is very promising

im off to newcastle tomz (bout 90 miles each way) so im keen to know what she'll do considering how tight she'll be (ive heard that somewhere before) and ur results are very encouraging

tbh i only ever got about 55 in the mkI on same route, never did achieve high mpg despite all the rumours

I did a run from from Guisborough down to the NEC yesterday with 3 guys all about 80-90kg each and sat on the cruise at about 75mph with the odd burst to get past people and get up to speed from junctions etc and averaged 40.7mpg on the trip! thats with only 600 miles on the clock!

I must have a something wrong with mine as I struggle to achive an avarage anything like the claimed figures from you down south.

However at the weekend I have found I can gain aproximatly 10 mpg just by being within the slip stream of any vehical (the actuall amount is dependent upon the vehical and how close you are).

Though having looked at the front of the VRS side on I can see why, as its near as makes no diffrence a vertical slab being shoved through the air.

No slipstreaming for these journeys !

The absolutely huge difference I have found is using cruise control. It makes a massive difference as your speed is more consistent and it lets off on slight downhill gradients where you might not notice it.

Noticed this also. I did 200 miles to Mansfield, virtually all motorway. Cruise @ 70mph and I got 49mpg according to maxidot. So say 46mpg as maxidot is optimistic. Would have been about 450 miles a tank or more.

you're doing better than me.. my problem is no cruise, then I get frustrated with people, then start driving faster! :(

Vist to shark for a remap was it.....

I drive for enjoyment as well as to get somewhere, so 90% of the time I get fed up sitting at 60mph for hours on end. I`m happy to pay the extra fuel and you`d be surprised what you can do in that extra 20 min

I'm driving for work, being paid milage, and on the clock whilst I'm on the road. So my take is simple, sit back, flick on talk sport, enjoy the 'profit' from better mpg :p

well just returned from my trip out, 90 ish miles each way

going i drove like a fanny and never went above 75, mostly single carriageways with about 30 miles of dual and very few overtakes i hit 45.3 mpg with car having previously only covered 120 miles

on the way home i had more fun and returned 37 mpg which if im honest i didnt mind coz i had some great fun, the car really does fly when you put ur foot down. only using D mode and no cruise on the way home unlike the way there which would have made some difference too

if it improves a little with loosening up then all the better but id be happy with 45 on any long trip

im off to newcastle tomz (bout 90 miles each way)

My missus is in town tonight... off to see ladyboys of bangkok.

Care to tell us what you were up to in newcastle mad monk!? :p

Took the vrs on a run to padstow from south Wales. 400mile round trip completed at the national speed limit.........ish and averaged 40mpg. i was really pleased as it was mixed driving some motorway and some country lane. i may have been pushing it at some points as well.

Car has done 4000 miles.

Gav

haha my secrets out now :p

Just the missus? ;-) haha

I did a trip in july from newcastle to milton keynes via york to pick up my brother. Mainly motorways and cruise at 75mph ish and got 45mph according to maxidot

The best I EVER averaged was 37mpg, and that was a whole week of driving like a granny and doing 56mph on the motorway at a safe distance behind trucks.

I think my long term average over nearly 2000 miles is 44.something

Cruise = the win for mpg.

I cant speak for the Fabia Vrs, But i have an Octavia Vrs TSI and managed 50 MPG on a 100 mile trip on the motorway at 65 mph with the cruise set. I really think its more to do with the way you drive rather than the engine type!!!

Its great to know i can get a computer calculated (accurate or not??) 50 MPG but also have over 250 bhp when needed

I have done 17, k in mine a good 13 k + on motorway, I have Revo map and my average overall is 34 mpg, at 80mph it will do 40mpg my wife gets high 40's all the time. my problem is the 25 mile of back road from the motorway to my home, in which I can go from averaging 40+ to low 20's but by do I enjoy the ride lol.

My best average was a run down to London from Birmingham, 13K on the clock and did 57.2 average on the trip, that was doing 55-60 on the speedo.

Usually I average 33 round town and 45-48 on the motorway if I am not on an economy run.

managed my best yesterday, when stuck behing a lorry in a long cue at 40-50 mph... over about 15 miles... got up to 59 mpg! woot! couldn't keep that up for long, clear bit of country rouad and it shot back down to 42 lol...

  B)

So, I really need a cruise control. Can it be retrofitted to a mk2 VRS?

Well I managed this today...

avmpg.jpg

I had to drive from home (Northamptonshire) to just outside London and back again - M1/M25 - around 69 miles each way. I was going with my partner and her toddler to pick some bits up for her business - so we had two adults, child + all that goes with child (pram etc) in with us and the A/C on the whole time.

As we weren't in any hurry I decided to see what I could get out of it and when we got back home above is what I averaged.

I basically tred to think back to the episode of Top Gear where Jerermy took that Audi to Soctland and back. No harsh accelerating, speed kept to 60 mph except through the roadworks on the M1 where it dropped to 50 mph - I don't have cruise so the speed was constantly varying a little. I tried to read the road as far ahead as possible but I didn't spend much time drafting behind lorrys as at 60 mph you are faster than them by 4 mph(ish).

It was a nice relaxing drive but you have to concentrate so much harder I reckon to get good MPG and constantly think about your next move. Im used to seeing around twenty something mpg usually so I was very impressed I managed this and it really does prove the vRS can be a practical daily driver if you take it steady (right up until some tit in an Audi/BMW/Merc cut's you up  )
