There was a piece in the paper today stating that 55% of men are completely confident when it comes to driving in the snow and ice whereas fewer then 1 in 5 woman are confident, i was just curious as to what you guys class yourself as.

I used to be confident in the snow with my Clio, small tyres, never had a problem but when i got my Golf Gti my confidence was trashed, it would slip over anything, no joking. Now i have my winter tyres on, believe me they are good but i cannot instill my confidence in them so i will most likely never use them to their full potential.

Im 50/50 ill go out if i need to but to my surprise every time i do go out my confidence grows as the other day it came down with snow and my car felt like it was on rails but on the return journey i felt myself getting apprehensive about the snow again.

Driving job so no choice.

Never lost confidence in my own abilities - just blamed the car! I've has some that were real pigs on snow or mud.

Have winter tyres on both cars....So VERY confident!!

I will drive in the snow and ice if I need to but will drive appropriate to the conditions. I grew up driving in lots of snow and so I am not put off by it but do know where I draw the line. If I don't need to drive then I won't.

Winter tyres so very confident. Driving on snow with them is just like driving on a wet road.

As has been said i need my car to get to work so don't have a choice. I also have to drive between sites in a van. This was very ropey last year, so much so that i went back to the office to drop van off to go back out in my own car as the van was all over the place on the country lanes covered in compacted snow.

when the snow finally does come i will be interested to see how the tyres perform but i just envision my Golf, sliding sideways and having no control, maybe had something to do with the 225 40's that where running a little low on tred but never mind!

any other weather i feel completely 110% confident in but after that winter in the Golf i need to rebuild confidence

Have you got winters?

I haven't tried the summers on mine in the winter. The Bora is bad enough with 205 55 16's so didn't even bother with 225s and a DSG!

yeah got winter tyres on now, 205 55 16's steelies with good year ultra grip 8's on.

need to learn to trust them, once bitten twice shy!

im 100% cinfident. its just the idiots that dont keep a safe distance and slide that scares me!

You won't believe the difference. I am the same as you....I skidded off on a bend in my first car and now never go round bends very quick...I know i could do them probably at least twice as quick in the VRS but as you say once bitten.....Went on a track day the other week and the chap who's car i was driving kept saying to go faster so that did build my confidence a little, i think a couple of more track days should help :D

no prob to me and we had 4" of the stuff this morning but its the others who are less capable or proberly equipped that I worry about.

Our councils did a fantastic job CRV which is on half worn normal rubber.

Winter tyres, or decent quality all-season tyres, actually make driving in snow fun, I find. I particularly enjoy the disbelief on the faces of my neighbours who can't understand why I can just plough through the snow when their cars can't even move a few feet in it :giggle:

+1 and the smug look on my face when i have just overtaken 2 stuck 4x4's in my Skoda!

I answered very confident in the poll.

Having said that I do not have a problem driving on normal tyres but would prefer winters.

I also tend to only drive in snow when I have to.

No point taking unnecessary risks is there?

There is always the idiot who's confidence outstrips his ability.

Yes, rather like a lady in my village with her Freelander. She backed off her drive, sat there stationary in the middle of the road with all four wheels spinning for a couple of minutes, then got her whole family out of the house to help her push it back onto the drive, where it sat unused for a week until the ice melted...

i wouldt say im less capable, i know how to control the car in the snow, hence iv never crashed but its just the apprehension of going off. Its the people who brake in the snow/ice are the folk who get me..use your gears and dont go too fast to begin with!

I'm plenty confident that I can assess the conditions and drive accordingly no matter what but like others, it's the plebs that have no idea that worry me.

You have then contradicted yourself by saying you only drive when you have to :giggle:

I used to ride a motorbike all year round in all weathers, was doing about 14,000 miles per year for 16 long years :o

ah yes, big empty car parks im fine! but living in the sticks we have some pretty tricky roads.

I know its abit off topic but have you noticed how all (well the ones iv checked) VAG outside temp readouts are always wrong? normally say its colder then what it is

Mine is always spot on. Unlike the Peugeot Partner's we have at work which get affected by the sun...It was 11C at one point today according to that!

Whenever they read the temp out on the local radio for somewhere near it is always the same or within 0.5 of what my car says.

None apply!

I've had the training, drive the right vehicle, have the experience, but would never say 100% simlpy because I also factor in the unexpected.

I also feel that anyone who shows that much confidence is potentially over-reaching themselves, and could easily be as just as dangerous as those that are not confident.

I now awaiting a flaming.
