I've had the training, drive the right vehicle, have the experience, but would never say 100% simlpy because I also factor in the unexpected.

I also feel that anyone who shows that much confidence is potentially over-reaching themselves, and could easily be as just as dangerous as those that are not confident.

I now awaiting a flaming.

It says very confident not 100% confident.....I think it goes without saying....

The only people that are over confident tend to be school run mums in their 4x4's as they are afterall invincible and somehow think that having a 4x4 means that them in their 2 ton missle on summer tyres can outbrake my 1 ton car with winter tyres..... :dull:

Mine is always spot on. Unlike the Peugeot Partner's we have at work which get affected by the sun...It was 11C at one point today according to that!

Whenever they read the temp out on the local radio for somewhere near it is always the same or within 0.5 of what my car says.

Mine always reads about 2 degrees below what is actual temp

I do agree with Llanigraham, a few people i know think they know it all when it comes to driving in poor conditions and ill never get in the car with them, needless to say one of them wrote their car off last year, not so clever now ey?

Very.......I've got enough past experiance...including writing off a car in winter. :S ........where I live we get snow....and I like mountaineering, ski-ing, ice climbing etc....so needs must.

I know the car and the winter tyres (3rd season on) can cope...the only weak link is driver error......so if the #### really hits the fan (weatherwise.....I'm talking howling blizzards with 10m visability) I slow down even more.....no point trying to write off another car...don't want another T-shirt!

So long as you've got shovels, warm clothes, etc, etc, etc.......just take it easy.......on 4 winter tyres the car will not snap around and skid.......it will slowly drift around like ballet..gracefully....and it will feed you information through the steering wheel...just keep in a low gear and use the throttle....fun can be had getting a front wheel drive car to around a bend like a RWD car... :giggle: .......did that on the main road (remote A road) (first out on road) fresh snow very early in morning......a nice sweeping downhill (slight) left ......followed by a nice right.....the tyre trails left in the snow...  ....god only knows what the next person to come across them thought!!!!...

Drive for a living also so no choice, we also get left out for as long as they can before pulling us in (understandable), but you`d surprised how easy a bus is to drive in the snow.

ah yes, big empty car parks im fine! but living in the sticks we have some pretty tricky roads.

I know its abit off topic but have you noticed how all (well the ones iv checked) VAG outside temp readouts are always wrong? normally say its colder then what it is

My Golf is reading 22.5oc today. Think it needs replacing! emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

I have issues driving in the snow mostly, it's others that worry me! (But I'm sure others say that about me too!)

Im a confident driver in all weathers as I drive for my job doing 50k a year in the north of england.

Also I have been driving cars and riding Motorbikes in all weathers for over 25 years.

I remember when we used to get snow every year for weeks on end not just a couple of inches that last a few hours.

Its only the last couple of years we have start ed to get a decent amount again.

Winter tyres do really help as well.

I do find the vrs alot better in the snow than my previous volvos ever were, even my diesel s40 was hopeless it wouldn't go anywhere without slipping and sliding about,

My vrs is tucked up for winter this year so it shouldn't see any snow this year unless the mighty 250quid vectra dies

I don't mind driving in the snow. You just have to adapt to the conditions, which most people seem incapable of doing. I've driven two cars through winter, a Rapid which was great fun for obvious reasons; and a Fiat Punto. The Punto wasn't great but I still managed very well in it. I enjoy the extra challenge!

I was one of 5 drivers on our firm last year when it snowed heavily who actually made the whole distance to Glasgow in a fully freighted 44t artic. Once you've done that, a car is nothing lol

I too drive for a living (HGV's) and have driven across Scandinavia during the winter,

I will tackle most roads no problem, however I will also give the snow the respect that it should be given, just because I have winter tyres on my car and have done lots of autotesting and rallying - I so know how to control a car there is always that un-driven road that will bite you on the bum if you don't give it the respect it deserves!

I grew up in single track territory in the NW of Scotland , and learned to drive there ,after passing test . No sanded roads -no snow ploughs -we did get one ,which blocked road for several hours ,whilst we skated around. So to me I'm not used to sanded roads , but in this neck of woods ,we get roads shined by idiot drivers - who think that more speed means more traction ,when the reverse is the truth .Perhaps we need another THINK campaign -but then driving in snow is not a major safety campaign .

ironic i started this thread, iv just been driving through snow

i must say impressed with the winter tyres, pulled into an very open junction, i push the car a little to right where there was some untouched snow...plowed through it like a good 'un! Obviously making sure i had plenty of run off room if it didt go to plan though!

Loved the snow in my old mk3 polo, got to the point I'd be capable of entering a rally :).

Hated the snow in my Lupo, automatic box just spoiled it plus the increased value of the car meant I didn't feel like having fun.

This year (albeit in Canada) I've got a 1999 Volvo V70R AWD. I'm not too worried but not looking forward to it either. It's on decent winter tyres too.

It's the other road users I have no confidence in as witnessed by the 38t lorries tailgating me on the M6 this Friday in the snow. :S

Im confident, I've driven over some not so good roads in bad snow and ice (honister pass, newlands valley and winlatter pass) on quite a few occasions in two wheel drive cars and never really had a problem ( tbh I quite enjoyed it) but I do have a lot of experience driving. It's all about the speed you approach things, I would say 90% of people don't respect bends in the road and approach things too fast.

Sounds like the compleate opposite to round here. Everyone gets stuck, just moves enough to get going then slows down and gets stuck again

You have then contradicted yourself by saying you only drive when you have to :giggle:

What I mean is I feel confident to drive in snow and ice but I ask myself if the journey is necessary to lessen the risk of meeting said muppet.

If the roads were empty I could drive all day and enjoy it, but we all know that's not going to happen

As far as driving experience and training goes

I'm in the same camp as llanigraham

I do agree with Llanigraham, a few people i know think they know it all when it comes to driving in poor conditions and ill never get in the car with them, needless to say one of them wrote their car off last year, not so clever now ey?

That's exactly the people I was on about

last year was by far the worst i think, at the time i had a pug 107, cracking in the snow with it 50p wheels but on north yorkshire moors, once you stop on one of those hills you have had it, 4 cars in front of us had come to standstill and we didt want to go round in case something came down, it totaled to about 40 cars getting stuck, even on the news :smirk:

even the snow plow got stuck..all on xmas eve too!

Before winter tyres were the hot topic it was always known that 4x4 drivers with their summer tyres thought they were invincible purely because they knew they were driving a 4x4.

In reality they were nearly always the first to roll into the nearest ditch - over confidence.

Whilst winter tyres are a real improvement it worries me that people with them now think that they too are invincible, right up to the point they under steer into a packed bus shelter.

Those that tend to frequent motoring forums such as Briskoda tend to think a lot about their car and driving in general so these examples are less likely to apply. Unfortunately we are the minority of the motoring population.

I reckon there is as much chance of being run up the back of by a superhero on winters or the local pimp in his X5 than an over cautious car on summers!?

Yep

I always do "defensive driving".....create a safe "bubble" space around your car.........eg treat every one else as a total idiot.......just because they might be indicating right doesn't mean that they are going to turn right.....they migh turn left, or they just forgot to cancel the idicator stalk!!.. B)

Mind you when I drive within the limits of my car (and within the limits of the conditions, and my skill (or lack of))...in winter and over take a "cautious car on summers" (who would be doing 20mph) whilst I do 40mph (I have winter tyres on)....I bet they will be saying "look at that bloody idiot..who does he think he is??".... :giggle:

Theres not enough negative adjectives to describe the BMW X5, or its drivers.

I pulled an X5 out of a ditch during last years snow with my Yeti on summer tyres!!

Boy was he urinated off!!!

And he didn't offer me any beer tokens either! :'(

a friendly landy defender driver pulled me up a hill last winter, he didt want anything but i gave a full bottle of peach schnapps  but its amazing how people will not stop and help, ill always lend a hand if i can

My dad goes to his Mrs family in Scotland each year for xmas. Last year he pulled a numerous cars and vans out the snow on his way in his L200. His always happy to loan a hand

People will push the limits in all weather at any time of the year. The problem is that they don't change their driving for the different times of year and road conditions.

I have driven past stuck 4x4s as the idiots driving them don't understand what they are doing, last year my one of my neighbours was laughing as I managed up the road in an 04 Fabia while all the BMWs, Mercs and flash things my neighbours drove just spun away merrily.

Winter tyres will help, so will a 4x4, so would swapping the car in for a tank, (think of the road rage in one of those) but it is predominantely down to how you drive and knowing what is going on around you. It is good to see that many people are seeing the benefits of winter tyres but as someone has already said, that is likely to make them over confident. With long periods of snow a very rare thing in the majority of this country many will only see the bad weather for a few days a year (last year was an exception) and so are unlikely to gain any real experience in the conditions. No idea how we deal with this other than just let them shut down for the days it snows.

Very rarely have I been put of by the actual weather, most of the time it is the idiots out there who make me stay at home. Maybe I am strange in that I prepare for the weather and carry various emergency items in the car (rarely had to use them but I know they are there). For info this is the first time I have ever used winter tyres and I have just moved down from Scotland! They are good and I am happy with them but I am very aware that my improved stopping distance is cancelled out by the idiot behind me!
