Featured Replies

"Guess where i am going at 3pm today" he says.

"Clap clinic  " i say.

He laughed for a second before telling me he is booked in at JBS for the revo treatment on his 23 day old 1000 mile Fabia vRS ! How gutted am i, he beat me too it.

he will let me know the results later. Any gentleman's bets on before and after bhp and torque !?!?

I think it will pull 139bhp and 235 lb/ft before and 180bhp and 290 lb/ft after.

I say BHP is about right - torque I reckon could pip 300. ;)

I've been thinking about the remap options for a brand new car & I'm in two minds whether to get it done now(ish), later, or not at all (insurance)....

I thought it wasn't such a good idea to get them remapped so soon & they should be bedded in a little better first?

Edit : So I'm not completely hijacking here, I'll go for 135bhp standard & 176 mapped ;)

Dont hold your breath for those figures....

mine pulled 184 and 307. with over 30k miles... mine is also (apparently) the most powerful non-hybrid revo pd130 they have tested..

IIRC Josh only got 175bhp with 7k miles on the clock.

Right then and the results are:

BHP after 182

lb/ft after 306

They didn't RR it before for some reason ?!?!?

You win then!

I think devonutopia agreed with 180hp but felt 300+ lb/ft was achievable, and he was right

Okay. So i have no idea how, but i went out in my chums chipped Fabia last night. It is very fast, it is less PD feeling, and more fast n/a car like. There seems to be no dip in power it is just constant from about 1800 - 4500. But we couldn't resist a play with a Leon Cupra 150 TD - Strangely enough the fabia was much quicker to 70 but although it was still quicker top end it was only just quicker which was a bit odd ?!?

But when he dropped me off after a little play, we decided to compare my 400 mile standard vRS with his 1400 mile chipped vRS. And from 2nd gear to 5th he managed to pull about a foot away from me !?!?!?

Not sure what to make of that ? Anyone want to throw some idea's around ?

You're a driving god? :D

Or has the dealer played with yours?

His had a full tank of fuel & yours was empty? ;)

Seriously though, I would think that was a bit odd. Although maybe his 'feels' faster as it has constant power, but the big 'poke' of power in a standard model makes up for it a little? Just clutching at straws, as I've never been in a remapped one.

Well believe it or not, i had 2 baby seats and a double push chair in the boot, 3/4 of a tank and he had 1/4 of a tank and non of the above !?!? I imagine 100+ mph it would pull lots and lots though ?!?!

But i won't deny i am a driving god ;)

your engine was cold and fresh, his had just been ragged for hours befor?

it ALWAYS feals faster when your a passenger, and both his car and the Leon are badly damaged and cant run to full capacity, but yours can, and compared to his damaged vRS it seemed just as quick?

:Dlmao

His car had been ragged but had been turned off for 30 mins, and then mine was running for 10 mins stationary before we set off.....

Either way, i think we will have to go on a long cross country run to determin the difference

mine was running for 10 mins stationary before we set off.....

Just as a side-note, the manual specifically recommends not doing this, especially when the engine's cold as, unlike a petrol engine, a diesel one only gets warmer under load, so the engine will be idling with cold oil in it......... :)

Perhaps i should give the full background to the events leading up to our little sprint. I finished work at 5:45, and drove to the local Land Rover dealer, picked up my mums RR by 6:15 and ran it back to my house, my mate then picked me up at 6:30 and we drove to the Land Rover dealer. I had to wait for the key holder to come and let me in. My mate turned his car off at 6:40 and left if while we waited, then the bloke came 20 mins later, i started my car at this point and waited for 10 for him to mess about with the gates etc, and at around 7:10 we both set off.

I don't tend to leave cars running stationary for too long when cold. Just a min or so, as my drive is reasonably steep and i reverse out of the garage and up the drive in the morning !

Sorry if this is a daft question but what do you mean by less PD feeling? Whats PD?

PD is pumpe duse. Its the technology used on the VAG diesel engines. It reacts in such a way that it produces all the power and torque the bottom end of the rev range, but peaks off early and simply revs round the last 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm without that pinned in the back of your seat sensation. The chipped version doesn't have that intant power reaction, but does pull strong throughout the rev range, and thus less PD like. Hope this graph helps also.

Cheers

Thanks for that, well explained!

I get the feeling that a lot of this quick blast rolling road proven 190Ps is codswallop. If the engine was capable of such power then why dont Skoda sell it like that? Even the 3.0 Audi V6 struggles to make the quoted 225PS. You dont get this power for free, durability will suffer.

Anyway, why can't they make a car that handles. What does PAS stand for porridge assisted steering? Even my wifes Golf TDI kicks the Fabia's teeth in down a country lane.

Oh yeah, as you can tell I'm not that impressed. My 04 plate 10K car is for sale, offers around

well bob, manurfactures never sell a car with the engine to maximum performance.

a. durabilty

b. emmions and taxes

bb. eccomany figures

c. after sales for performance upgrades.

d. later models with better performance figures, same engine but less restricted, so they can sell it as a new higher performance car, and for more money.

and the golf is a better floor pan and has proven better handling than ALOT of other cars, i dont think anyone on here would try and say different about the golf??

the problem with fabisa is not lack of power its the gearbox.... too many rations and too long to change between them.. thus remapping makes little real world difference as your always reaching for the next cog if you screw it...

if you just select a higher gear and surf the torque the car will go faster...

simply add a dsg box and it would make far far more diff.....

Sorry guys I was a bit harsh. The Fabia is quite a useful little car, I'm just expecting too much from it. Its just a pity that VAG haven't been able to work the same magic on the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia platform that they did with the Golf (A3/OctyII/ etc).

Anyway, I'm selling the car not because of the handling which for a commuter car is more than ample (it is a very capable car, just not that involving) but because I cant get three kids in the back (on booster seats). Anyone, interested drop me a mail. It will be on autotrader next week.
