Vrs mk1 noisey

Featured Replies

Hi all got a mk1 vrs fabia and its noisey untill u put the clutch in, then is quiet agen, the clutch doesnt slip atal, and performance isnt affected will this be just the thrust bearing, and be ok to just replace this, with say the clutch as its out? Im not to clued up on the dual masd flywheel side of things, also if the cars sat on idle with lights on they dim whem i move steering wheel, is this just battery related as there arent any fault codes or this normal cheers aaron

If it's regular/rhythmic, "noise" is probably gearbox idlers and/or bearings and/or the thrust bearing rattling around a little.

If it sounds like bricks in a mixer, clattering, not at all rhythmic, it's more likely the the DMF.

Only reason to change the clutch (other than clutch knackered) is if the flywheel (DMF) needs doing. In that case, it might be better to change clutch too. As labour for the job is more than a few hours.

Lights dimming happens on mine too and I've got Xenons. It's been like that since new. Fabia PS pump is electric and draws lots of amps.

Input shaft bearings in gearbox. Release bearing that have gone are only noisy with clutch depressed. Gearbox oil change may help, but the box could do many more miles if the noise is only a faint whine. DMF symptoms sounds like someone trying to get out of hell with a large hammer.

Ahh gees dude its only done 52thou isit likely to fail ?

It's a pretty strong box, and likely to go past 250K noisy bearing or not. It's a 3 shaft box so more bearing to go noisy.

Yeah, my mechanic mentioned an input shaft bearing rattle on mine after he fitted my new clutch and SMF. But he said he's known some boxes do it for thousands of miles from nearly new (being a Skoda mechanic for many years before opening his own business so I trust his opinion), so he's going to have a listen at the next service when the clutch is bedded in and see if it's anything to worry about.

Thrust bearing on my old Ford Ranger used to do the exact same thing, sometimes if you pumped the clutch a couple of times the noise would stop. If it had been a noisy bearing it never would have disappeared though.

A quiet 6 speed box is more the exception rather than the rule. Faint whine on over run is common, as is slight rumble from the first motion shaft after 30,000 miles. The bearings are strong, and seldom break up, in fact in some cases, they go quiet again and never give any further problems.

Drive more, worry less.

Been told its 99percent the drive bearing, but when this goes its highly likely that its wrecked the rear case so different gearbox is required,
