Slightly dissapointed

Featured Replies

Went to my local Skoda Dealers at the weekend and test drove a brand new diesel VRS, comfort was acceptable, handled well, but i was really disappointed by how much engine noise could be heard within the cabin.

When you put your foot down i found the diesel tractor engine really intrusive. My mondeo ST 155 tdci is so much quieter.

Is the petrol version any better? They didn't have a petrol for me to try.

I gather you drove a PD rather than a CR Diesel

Mine is quiet (CR)

I doubt it if the one he drove was brand new?

Assume you test drove the pd, sounds like a tractor? The cr, circa 58 onwards, is much more refined. Petrol much better on every level in my opinion, tsi or tfsi, apart from fuel economy but with the newer more fuel efficient tsi there's not a huge amount in it. I averaged 36 in my cr and now average 29 in my tsi.

Just realised you said brand new diesel vrs therefore it should be cr. In that case it was either a duffer or the vrs just isn't for you because as diesels go the cr is very refined. The octavia does suffer from a bit of road noise but it's never bothered me.

CR i believe.

Brand new, unregistered, less than 50 miles on the clock.

Definitely the CR. Maybe i was expecting too much, might be worth trying a petrol to compare.

Definitely not road noise, it was the engine noise. :(

Did the engine warm up? They all sound like tractors in this freezing weather when started. A lot quieter when warm (which takes a while as the diesels are efficient so no wasted heat)

It is a rather unrefined sound when you hit the higher revs but i dont think it sounds bad at all and i drive the PD so it will be slightly louder.

Not to have a go or anything but im getting a little tired of people moaning about the con's of the diesel engine, engine noise, turbo lag, rough power delivery. It just seems that some folk want the diesel to be like the petrol, the basic principles are the same but their miles apart, what do you expect? What people call the 'draw backs' of a diesel i like

The Mrs always says the car sounds "very angry" when I give it the beans :giggle:

It is a bit bipolar, either burbling about at 12-1500 rpm or going trans warp !

With regards the petrol, in short the answer is 'yes' much better. I have owned the PD vRS and am now driving the petrol. Admittedly, I haven't driven the CR but as you drove a brand new one, it sounds like you didn't get on to well with that. The newer petrol engines, TSI not tfsi, are very refined and sound pretty decent when pushed.

IMO, other than economy, the petrol wins hands down. *Please note, that is my own opinion from comparing the PD vRS and the TSI vRS, others on here will vary*

As stated, i already drive a diesel, my last 3 cars have all been diesel (engine noise outside the car, turbo lag, power delivery - never an issue!). When standing outside the car, the octavia is no louder than my mondeo st tdci engine, my point was, if a 6 year old mondeo can suppress the noise within the car, i was disappointed with advances in technology that they could not suppress the sound similarly in the octavia.

Its not that i didn't get on with it, it was a nice drive, it's just i was amazed how intrusive the engine noise was. I had myself thinking, if i had the blue-tooth phone kit, how loud would i need to turn it up to hear the conversation lol

i'm guessing this is your first skoda diesel?

i used to own the mk4 1.9tdo 150, it was loads quieter but only because of the sound proofing, as in my opinion the skoda's (compared to the rest of the VAG family) get the bare minimum when it comes to luxury, once again what do you expect, they have to draw the line some where otherwise they wouldt be so cheap, compared to the eqvilient Audi for VW

saying that i think you could do worse, i had an SEAT Ibiza for a loan car last week, it was not nice to drive or be in at all, my octy felt allot better put together and more refined

Most now don't come with under bonnet insulation anymore but it can be added cheaply, this would help I reckon.

I was under the impression that the diesels did - it was the petrol ones that no longer had it.

Mine is really quiet. I've been in a st tdci and that sounded like a bag of nails.

Something wrong with the Skoda? Or something wrong with your ears?!?

MInes very quite!...in fact when warmed up youd struggle to tell it was a smokey!!

k:)

My PD sounds quite angry when I give it the loud pedal. Quite like it.

+1 would sound even better with a nicely tuned after market exhaust, nothing boy racer-ish mind

Replaced my st for octavia vrs pd last year wasn,t that impressed at first on test drive and SWMBO noticed the noise difference between mondeo and octavia, but it hasn,t put us of and think the octavia is a much better well screwed together beast and i,m glad i changed

I have a CR and I don't think it's refined tbh. Even compared to other cars in its class or even the older PD engines its not a huge advance.

Either I'm deaf (which is possible), or tractors have improved significantly since I last heard one, as my CR Octavia sounds nothing like a tractor

The 1.6 CR 105bhp in the Fabia Monte Carlo is less refined, but still quieter than SWMBO's PD 1.9 TDi Sport equivalent

Anyway, surely if you are looking at a diesel for what it does, the sound won't put you off enough to go for a petrol

Turn your radio up..

The only slightly loud noise I've experienced is road noise, the engine is a diesel after all so it's not gonna be as quiet as a petrol, and trust me if you purchase one you'll soon forget about it because you'll be more than happy with everything else.

Have never found the CR intrusive while on the move. On many occasion passenger's have often remarked on how quiet it is and even questioned it being a deisel!

Could never be tarnished with the stereotypical 'Agricultural' remark you stated!

Maybe the car in question had an issue?

Have driven the ST (130k before it disintegrated) and VRS I wouldnt go back.

Like everything it all depends on what is important to you and the compromise your willing to make.

Good luck on your hunt!
