What's the going rate for cambelt change?

Sounds like he's just planning to change the belt and not the rollers/tensioners.

If you are doing the job then do it properly and fit the full cambelt kit.

Any one who doesn't replace the rollers and tensioner is cutting corners and the VAG warranty on the cambelt will be invalidated if I recall correctly. All the parts have to be changed, not just the belt.

And whilst you are in there get the water pump changed for the metal impeller type if it hasn't already been done - the plastic ones have a habit of letting go.

Skoda and an indy both told me that the proper cambelt kit comes will all the rollers and tensioners as a complete set.

Its false economy to do a half job. You'll only end up re visiting this repair and end up paying more than what others are quoting for the proper job in the long run. I've never heard of any technician worth his/her salt attempting a cam belt change without using the full kit and changing the water pump at the same time.

Follow up.... Mechanic did full kit change out & gave back the old belt, pulleys & tensioners,etc for my inspection, which all looked ok!

Better safe than sorry!

Paid 334£ today for pump , belts and coolant. First skoda dealer wanted 525£ for the same job. Worth phoning around and haggling.

Meant to also say it was the full kit that's been replaced!

Just had mine done, full cam belt kit, tensioners water pump for £250 at a local nonfranchise...

Had mine done last week at local dealer originally said £390 for belt and pump and coolant but after i threatend to go to indy over road got it for £330.

£280 belt and metal water-pump at a Seat dealer

£425 for mine by my local Skoda Dealer incl.water pump and 2 stretch bolts for the engine mounting which HAVE to be changed as you can,t re-use the old ones.

Ummmmm....I did mine at 80k on my 1.9tdi, is it really needed at 40k? Was going to do the water pump at 160k with the next belt change.

Would the cambelt etc. need doing on an 06 Octavia vRS (Petrol) even though it has only 22K on the clock?

Thanks guys for all the feedback, I'm looking at using a recommended independent VW specialist who has quoted approx £100 labour plus parts.... says water pump should not need changed, also says full cam kit not required only part.

Would definitely not recommend this...I made the mistake a few years back with my 1.9 TDi. Used a local independent who I assumed knew what they were doing. He was very proud to show me the genuine Skoda paperwork for the belt that had been fitted. I thought all was well and good....until 12k later when something went 'clink' in the engine, accompanied with lots of blue smoke and a loss of power. Turns out it was a tensioner that hadn't been changed and which sheared off, causing the belt to jump. :S

Cost to sort was over £500, and I was lucky as when it happened I was gently coasting down a hill, so no real pressure on the engine. Speaking to other local independents they have all said they would never just fit the belt, and if the customer insisted this was all they did, would actually refuse. Be warned!!

I recently paid £ 399.00 including water pump in West London. They price matched a dealer in Reading, who were offering £ 299.00 for the cam belt kit + £ 100.00 for the pump and coolant top-up.

The dealer price started at over £ 500.00 - it pays to 'phone around.

£590 including pump!!

£399 cambelt

£454 including pump

Gordon Lamb Derby

£380.70 including pump!

Rainworth Skoda

£467.47 including pump

You should be paying about £300-350 at a decent garage, one in Coventry offer a 2 year gurantee with their cambelt change.

My dealer has just quoted £299.00 for a cambelt change on my car.Mine is the petrol 2.0 tfsi engine.

Just had this from a garage around the corner from me for my 2005 Fabia 1.4 tdi...

As discussed on the phone, there are two ways which you could have the job done and I have listed both jobs below with their respective prices.

Labour to replace the timing belt kit would be £99.00

Timing Belt Kit would be £99.75

Consumables £ 3.00

Sub Total £201.75

Vat £ 40.35

Total £242.10

Labour to replace the timing belt kit and water pump would be £117.00

Timing belt kit would be £ 99.75

Water Pump £ 39.00

A/Freeze £ 10.50

Consumables £ 3.00

Sub Total £269.25

Vat £ 53.85

Total £323.10

I have just had very different quotes: £485 from VW, £500 from one garage and £280 from another!! Why such a big difference? I asked the garage that quoted my £280 what parts they used and they said OE quality parts....Is it a case of too good to be true?
