DRL activate with main beams

Featured Replies

Hello every one

I have activated DRL on my Octy II FL but they go off when main beams come ON. Is there any way to activate DRLs along with the main beams. I have VCDS but couldn't find any option in that. Anybody successful with that.

Regards

Alam

DRLs are NOT supposed to operate with low/main beams, hence cannot work simaultaneously.

its illegal and it would b blinding, for on coming drivers, at night with them on.

DRL's are just that, lights for the daytime purely for the purposes of increasing the visibility of yourself. Their function therefore is completely different to headlights and they are turned off when the headlights are on. They cannot be changed.

Not strictly true. DRLs must either dim or switch off completely when the sidelights or headlights are switched on. As the DRLs are mounted in the fog light housing Skoda probably thought it best to switch them off so that they are not mistaken for fog lights.

Why then do Mercedes/Range Rover/Audi DRLs stay on with headlights? Only curious, not trying to cause a row lol

In fact thinking about it, my mate has a FL vRS with DRLs from the factory. His are on with his headlights :|. He may have been able to do it with VAGcom as he's done all sorts of other fancy stuff with it, like dash needles sweep round when ignition is switched on etc

The Octavia vRS FL daylight running lights dim when the headlamps are on (or if you switch to sidelights). The others you've listed will be the same.

They dim when dipped headlights are switched on.

In fact Octavia vRS's dont have sidelights at all..They use the dimmed DRL's

From what I've seen, the Audi A4/A6 (and others) with drls next to the headlight don't dim with the headlights on. They only dim when the indicators are used. I too would like the drls to be brighter when sidelights are switched on.

Ah that explains it:) thanks

i know very well that DRLs either dim (vrs) or switch off (non-vrs).

i have a vrs myself.

wat i meant was that DRLs aren't meant to run at 'full power' with the low/main beams activated. this either done by 'dimming' or 'switching off', depending on the configuration.

the audi and merc ones DO "dim" with the low beams. its just they don't 'dim' as much as the vrs DRLs. its also less obvious when the DRLs are in the headlight cluster itself.

u can control, using VCDS, the level of dimness for the DRL on the vrs, as it uses the DRLs as a sidelight too. i think the max is 60% of 'full power'. i don't remember wat the default setting is. maybe 20-40%?

i've coded my DRLs to dim when the indicator turns on. tis a nice little touch :)

DRLSs have to dim / go out with the lights, if they dont they will badly blind oncoming drivers. Unlike headlights DRL's are designed to be seen in bright sunlight so are much brighter than headlights, so if it were night time when headlights are used they would be very blinding indeed. I find them a problem in daylight, let alone in the dark.

Audi A4 etc, DO dim with the headlights its just they dont appear to as they are dimmed to the same level as the headlights themselves, they have to for EU type approval.

Thankfully most people can see the reason for dimming the DRLs with headlights. It's almost becoming a competition to dazzle or bling up besides using xenons or HID beams. For those who state they need even brighter lights, with the exception of those who drive on the Autobahnen or in remote parts or where ambient light is persistently poor, I see no real need for them in a developed country with reasonable roads and lighting. It's like saying I need my Rear Fog Light on permanently.... Oh wait that's what most drivers do now in almost any slightly misty conditions driving nose to tail with them on....
