o2 "The Works" broadband package / Sky Unlimited broadband with xbox gaming and video streaming?

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I just wondered if anyone had either o2's The Works broadband pack or Sky's Unlimited broadband pack who uses it with an Xbox or even a PS3 etc....

To be honest i'd always had sky down as being a not too good provider so hadn't considered them when we signed up to have the o2 broadband earlier this week. We signed up for their top pack The Works which has no limits but does still have some throttling that they say won't affecting gaming only p2p. Sods law the day after signing up i was searching for something and came across a post on a forum relating to this claim maybe not being correct and the throttling causing issues with online gaming. A little more digging and i have come across a few more posts saying the same and the most common advice is people not to move off their old o2 unlimited/un-throttled packages at any cost!!!

I then had a look at Sky's unlimited package which has no limits again but also has no throttling at any time either. The other pluses are that where as the o2 pack including their basic pay as you use home phone pack came to £19.50 a month Sky's pack including their basic home phone pack, which actually has free evening and weekend calls, comes to £12.25 for six months then £19.75 for six months so it does work out cheaper etc.... And it would also give me the Anytime+ ability on our HD box.

So before i call o2 and cancel the order going through, (the connection date isn't till the 21st of February), can anyone provide any first hand info on what either of these two are like for use with gaming etc.....

Cheers

Dave.

Don't forget that Sky will be offering FTTC from April for some lucky people!

Sky do not do any throttling or traffic shaping, I get full speed all the time regardless of it being P2P ,online gaming or normal web browsing.

.....just as Virgin doubles their speed. (100Mbit here I come! B) )

I believe that they're trialling 200Mbit and 1.5Gbit in London.

we've got sky unlimited with two 360s connected and have zero issues with online gaming or streaming via netflix/sky

Sky Unlimited, no problems :D

Cheers guys.... Looks like it'll be Sky so far then. Will give o2 a ring over the weekend or on Monday to cancel the transfer and set something up with Sky i think.

Our exchange is planned to have FTTC but there is no date as yet so may be while yet. At the mo we get around 3-4meg. emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

I can't comment on gaming, but I have just moved to BT Infinity. I now have download speeds in the region of 33mb/s compared to o2's about 10. They are also thinking of doubling it when the government gives them permission.

I went for Infinity because of BT Openzone & BT Fon, as I'm out and about all over the place I will hopefully be able to get the laptop or phone to piggyback onto one of these services.

I think your over reacting... If O2 had an issue with online gaming there would be a proper ****storm created.

If sky is cheaper then go to sky.. Simple as, it's all much of a muchness

We can't get infinity here the exchange is on the 'to do' list but there is no date given by BT as yet. Best we can get is roughly what we get now...... Around 3mb/s.

There is over on the o2 forums. When you read through the posts back to when the throttling was introduced there are scores of people who were clammering to cancel the new contract they'd signed up to and get back onto the non-throttled legacy package they had come off...... emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Anyhows.... Thanks for the input guys. I cancelled the o2 order on Friday night and am going to set up the order with Sky tomorrow. It is, after all, cheaper than the o2 deal for a better package, (no throttling, free evening/weekend calls, free caller ID, Anytime+), but i just wanted to check with others who already were with Sky etc....

Cheers
