Today's mod: lowering

Hitting the part you have shown is part of the hub, how will that remove the track rod arm I don't think the shock would be enough, if I hit that it would just move the lot down, hub everything attached and track rod arm, I was trying to get the track rod disconnected out the way so the hub would come down far enough (as I thought it the hub wouldn't go down enough without removing it) to get the strut out.

  • I would like to know from either or boy Hayden and Jonny - now lowered does the ride quality now feel a bit bumpier or ok? And jonny have you also got the H&R's on? Thanks RockyVRS

I may have missed it but what are you lowering it on? Eibachs? H&R?

trust me mate, that is how you remove it.you give a clean hammer impact in the direction of the arrow I've shown.and that's what I've been saying all along IT'S THE HUB YOU HIT !!!

it's the H&R mate!

Update!!! I now have 3/4 lowered lol, just got the passenger side done, going out now so gunna do the other side tonight.

Hitting the hub part done nothing except mark it I even had a claw putting a bit of tension downwards on the track rod an hit the hub on the side more than once and it never budged. Managed to drop the hub just far enough an rotate it to get the strut out

Thanks for what, you didn't help, you explained and thanks for that but there's no need for capitals as if it makes it clearer it doesn't.

not to give up on a man.is this any clearer ?

how is it going for you? Did it all work out? :)

If it did, do u have some pics?

  • Author

Sure did got it finished last night, the drivers side took about 45mins, once we practiced on the other side lol.

Got some before an after pics, I'll get them up at dinner time, looks 100% better, only had a short drive to work but it feels a lot better too. I'll get a proper review up tonight as I'm doing a little longer journey after work to go and get the 5p a litre off v-power lol

will be nice to see how it sits on your alloys but looks like a big improvement

I know I cant wait to get the alloys back on, you should be able to tell the difference even more then.

Easyest way to lower it is to drop the subframe, it gives much more clearance to get the struts out of the hubs. There's only about 10 bolts to undo (4 steering rack, 4 subframe to chasis, and 2-3 for the dog bone engine mount) Means you have to do a wheel alignment after but pretty sure whatever you do you'll need to do that anyway.

Splitters will damage the boot. If you want to release the taper just knock on the end of the hub where the ball joint sits.

All kinda irrelevant anyhow as you don't need to undo it to change the strut anyhow????

Why would you be putting the splitter on the boot?! O_o

Either way, cheers for the info on not having to decouple the strut, I may be doing springs myself soon

Splitters - as in hub splitters will split the boot - as in CV boot... :dull:

Thanks for the info, I think your method would be needed to put the originals back on as there a bit longer.

Splitters -as in ball joint splitters - are for pressing taper-fitting ball joints out of their seats. Where the OP was originally hitting, the splitter would press through (assuming this is the aforementioned type of fitting). I'd whack a piccy up but am on my phone :-( Alas it looks like it's not required anyway so joy! They tend to go with a fair 'pop' which scared the bejesus out of me when I did my Galaxy control arms!

Oh and OP, the car looks awesome! You've convinced me that this needs doing to my car now

Thanks!

Update on how it rides, of course it's a lot firmer you feel the road more but in a good way I think, I think the set up is brilliant it's as if the dampers have been changed, when you do hit a bump or a dip in the road it's not a fierce bang or jerk you get when lowering some cars it just copes!

Not to sure about the handling yet as my winter tyres aren't very good on damp roads, but it does feel a lot, LOT more stable doesn't feel as if it's going to tip over lol (the handling was never that bad but when you see so pictures of them on track they do look that way)

Just need to get my summer wheels an tyres back on to finish the look of and try out how it handles. (or not with the sport maxx lol)

this turned out great :D

how is the ride compered to standards springs?

Yes, got there in the end!

The ride is brilliant, a lot firmer but not a crashy ride the standard dampers are a pretty good match with these springs

Thanks!

Nice one Hayden emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Soon as the alloys go on, make sure you get some pictures up emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yes Hayden, would love to see some pictures once the springs have settled a bit and you have your alloys on.

Thanks
