  • Good luck with your new wheels. Not sure they are 'way way better', but agree 'way way more expensive'!

  • It's odd as I do far far far less rattle jobs as a Skoda tech than I ever did working on VWs. However that could be down to more VWs out there, higher expectations for customers maybe?

  • Techie I loved the skoda but it's not a patch on the golf 8k more but you do notice it, and far more stuff than standard my fabia and most of my previous skodas rattled and creaked but this golf felt

Model for Model the Golf is a quite a leap up from the Fabia in ride, refinement, handling and quality of materials. But the Golf is the Octavia's rival and not the Fabia's and the prices reflect that.

I've never had a major issue with the build on any of our Skoda's but did fall out with my local dealership so now use another dealer (Or the Ford dealer next door to the Skoda dealer just to annoy them)

And we also have three VW's in the family, my 2.0CR DSG Passat, my uncles Golf 1.6TDi SE DSG and wife uncles Golf 2.0CR GTD. All were bought new and have been totally faultless. I've had my Passat 20months now and have covered 24k miles and not had a single issue, just a couple of free services and putting fuel in, it's been the best built car I've had but again it should be as you are paying a premium price.

I'm sure you will enjoy the Golf, actually tried the bluemotion when my uncle was looking at buying a diesel Golf but as he drives mainly around town and B roads he felt the Bluemotions gearing was a bit tall so he went for the dsg which he felt was much more lively. He's swapping it at the end of this year but switching to petrol (1.2 TSi), I'm half tempted to buy his old one for my wife in place of our 1.2HTP.

Cheers

Hi lee yes the premium price shows, the gearing is long as the fabia is same engine but less cabin noise, even outside it sounds less rattle but Octavia was to big for us and again not so premium feel, I've had the golf for the same kind of price as a Octavia with the match having a higher standard of equipment

Some things never change then :giggle:

Good for unaccompanied test drives but that was it. Think I got that because I said to him Renault build quality wasn't brilliant and he wanted to prove me wrong :giggle: . RenaultSport are great but it's the mental leap to owning one I don't think I could do

Does he have to come back?

:(.

Used to be on that when I had the Passat, good forum as it uk-mkIVs in whatever form it is in now. Much better than the mini forums I am also on which are pretty lifeless (like owners?).

The Golf is the one VW truly worth having, it is more expensive but you will get it back. The Golf is a design classic and truly classless, driven by everyone from minor royalty down. I have had four of them but after a bad MkIV swore I would never go back to one, that was almost 10 years ago and the new MkVI is nice.....

I agree the mark 1 fabia was much better build quality, no rattles, I wish i kept my mark 1 fabia. Was like a golf mark 4. I think skoda relied on the fact people think skoda are like vw's underneath so when it came to the mark 2 fabia, those who never owned a marjk 1 wouldn't have anything to compare to unless they got somethiing decent build quality of the legendary vw type.

Thanx black can't wait now, I'm going to retro fit fogs and mudflaps the fogs will be for looks as they wont be wired just yet

Good luck with the VW. as with all cars you get good and bad examples. 'm pretty sure that most members would have a VW but take more than a hint of pleasure at getting VW engines and some of the other VAG parts and quality for less than the equivalent VW price. Yes the Golf will be good. I had a good trip in a new Polo recently and was very impressed. It was more 'grown-up' than the Fabia 1.2 I had as a courtesy car but about £2K more. You get what you pay for.

Haven't read through all 3 pages but the Golf is in a different class to the Fabia so will be better. The Octavia IMO is way better built than the Fabia as i did test a Monte as i had considered trading down to a 1.6TDI. The interior put me off as it just isn't as good as the Octy.

Completely agree.

Sat in a VRS Octy last week and the interior is way better than the Fabia. Then again, the Superb interior is really nice

I'm getting older aren't I ? :wonder:

Sorry to see you go over to the dark side but all the best with the Golf.

Can't agree with that at all, I have had both and the MK11 is a better car. It's lighter, which does give the impression of being flimsier but that is certainly not the case. It also keeps rain water on the OUTSIDE which helps  My car does not rattle either but my Mk 1 did have an annoying dashboard creak.

I had to reseal the doors myself after LHT Skoda failed twice to do it on the Mk1. The Mk2 is definitely lighter and you notice this at speed. Not sure if that's good or bad at high speed though. Although my mother now used to her Swift, even though she had drove a Mk1 Octy TDI for 5 years thought my Mk1 vRS drove like a tank :D

Congratulations on your new Golf seb.

I too will be looking at something "different" next time round.

I loved my skodas tbh but it was more of an issue with dealer, people say " it's a skoda with a different badge" I know because I was one lol, however after making the jump to the dark side, the build quality is far superior IMO I know I will be shot for that but it's true I'm afraid, I know it's a more expensive marque I know we shouldn't compare but we do we are human after all well some of use, you know who you are lol, I test drove the Octavia which is more akin to the golf and yes much better quality than a fabia, but yet the Octavia lacked the quality of the VW which is comparible to the Octavia, even the superb 2 which I had didn't up to scratch against the VW, would I buy another skoda? Probably not and mostly the reason as previous but also customer / dealer service is shocking

But if I was going to buy one again skoda, I would go and have a word with Kie on briskoda first

That's a shame, but perfectly understandable.

I had a Renault Megane in 2004 and absolutely loved it in every way. It even had keyless entry and the start button manufacturers boast about nearly 10 years on, but when the car had an electrical fault, both the dealer (Renault Liverpool) and Renault Customer disservice were UNBELIEVABLY shocking ! :wall:

For them reasons, I'll never buy a Renault again, even though I have to agree, some of their cars are nice.

Best of luck with it. You might still want to stick around, I'm sure you'll pick up some useful info and tips about it in the Octy II section.

As said, not really a straight comparison between the Fabia and Mk6 Golf; different sector and of course price bracket.

If you'd compared like-for-like and an Octy with a Golf, things might have been a bit closer :)

To be honest we had a look at the froggie cars but thought better of it lol, this golf is a nice place to be cannot here a thing and comfy were the fabia was non of these on a long trip and I had the elegance fully loaded, however I'm glad I jumped ship even tho it cost me lost soooooo much on the fabias

Hi wardy I did octy was good but not quite there IMO, but the brand was tarnished for me if I would have test driven a Bentley with a skoda badge on it, it would have been the same outcome which is sad :( but staying on board here lol I'd be lost without briskoda some great friends and banter ;)

Sebonini, I went from a MK1 Fabia VRS (doing just under 70K in 3 years) to a Golf Bluemotion SE (now Match), just under 3 years ago, and now have 66K miles on, so hope am qualified to comment.

The golf, as you say is a fantastic build quality, and feels like it will do a million miles. Economy has not been anything near expected, although as its a company car, I have ragged it relentlessly for most of those 66K miles. My average MPG is somewhere around 46mpg.

The only issues I have had, have come recently, firstly the fuel pump (sounded like a tractor), which was replaced under warranty as under three years old, and secondly the fan belt tensioner and fan belt went the other week, also sorted under warranty.

The car has hard life, but has never let me down, and feels as solid as a solid thing.

If I had a choice I would go for a bigger engined version next time, purely as I think I would get better economy (as not ragging it so much), but overall I'm delighted with it.

I loved my Mk1 Fabia VRS, and in performance terms the golf couldnt get near, but the wet rear doors, suspension clatterings got the better of me in the end.

Im just about to leave the company car scheme, and a golf is high on the list (although not sure whether I can wait until the MK7 is out).
