Has anyone successfully disabled a DPF on a PD170 engine?

BTW, mine just passed a legit MOT, including a smoke test.

That's good to know!! Thanks Nick.

I had mine done by A1MOTORServices in stafford. professionally removed using a plasma cutter and custom remap done. £450 cash. It has caused no ecu problems and has passed its mot today without comment. (done by a main dealer as well). You will notice a little more smoke under heavy acceleration though.

Great thanks Steve

Has anyone any experience with dpf removing in Ireland with joe power on a vrs?

Might get this done down the road!

Latest update - I called the insurance company to advise them of the work being done and to check that they were OK with the increase in BHP associated with the remapping. They were fine to cover me for the increased BHP (for an extra premium) but told me they (or rather, their underwriters) wouldn't cover anymore because of the DPF removal.

So I'm talking to insurers who known about modifications ... any recommendations?

KevC over on Vagdrivers got his done ( 2006 PD 170 )

Mapped as well I think he gets around 221 bhp

Got the DPF stripped out and brought it to Joe to sort the mapping.

Simple question of personal responsibility ... it's one of those things you don't take chances on. If I'm involved in an accident I want to be 100% sure that the insurance is there to protect me and anyone I may have caused harm to ... don't want to leave any possibility that the insurance company might be able to wriggle out of it on a technicality.

In the event Adrian Flux have already improved on the quote I was getting from my previous lot (Privilege) and have happily taken on board the DPF and the remapping - with much higher limits on the BHP increase allowed.

cjexpat - interested in your experience since your car has been done (23rd??) and service from your chosen specialist

Brentacre. Great to deal with and I'm only paying low £400s with wheels, map, exhaust, seats, suspension etc etc - everything declared.

Hello all

I promised to come back with a full account of my experience so here goes

22 March limp moded it all the way up to Mansfield where I was booked in the next day for the DPF removal and stage 2 remap with Shark. Stayed the night in the Mansfield Travelodge 20 mins away from Shark.

Spent the day at Shark with Mark & Rob - both really friendly, helpful and informative. Sat in the reception all day and used their wifi while they worked on the car. This was very useful as my insurance company decided on the day (while the work was being done!) that they weren't going to cover me because of the DPF removal (see my post above on 23 March which was made from the reception at Shark !!). So called around and finally got fixed with Adrian Flux - £360 fully comp with my 7 years NCB.

The job took longer than planned simply because a lorry went over on the Mansfield exit of the M1, spilling a load of chemicals all over the motorway, and shutting it down in both directions until late that night. Cue horrendous gridlock for miles around, which caught Rob out at another job, which he was returning from to do my remap.

Anyway - Mark whipped the brick out of the DPF for me and resealed it up, then Rob did the remap before we went out for a drive to get all the other sensors in the engine to believe that the DPF had gone through regeneration and it was OK to switch limp mode and all the dash lights off.

This required a15' dyno session, by which time it was 7pm and I was in a hurry to get on the road. At the end of the dyno run the engine fan was going after the engine was turned off but I reckoned that this was just due to the fact that the engine temperature had been stoked up and the fan was going through the normal cool down routine.

In the event, it turned out (once I was back home in Hampshire) that one of the (two) fan units had packed in and the other one had gone into fixed "on" mode (apparently this is normal emergency procedure). I can only assume that the fan gave in as a result of the caning on the dyno but to be fair I can't blame Rob or Mark, the car is middle aged (115k) and the part was probably pretty worn down anyway. Rob gave me some advice by phone over the weekend - things to check before getting the fan replaced - but in the end it turned out to be the fan unit, so had to get the whole rad fan replaced. By this time, between the DPF removal + remap + fan I've spent £1,200 all in - painful but still better than the £1,800 Skoda wanted to replace the DPF - and I now have a 215 BHP VRS rather than the stock 170.

Couple of weeks on and all seems fine with the car. As promised, the acceleration is significantly more responsive and powerful, particularly in 4th & 5th gears, and it's great fun to drive !!!! The smell of the diesel emissions is noticeable when you step out the car - but no surprise there. The only other issue which has become apparent - but Rob warned me of this before the work was done - is that the clutch has a tendency to slip if you don't change gears smoothly, as the plate is worn after 115k. So looks like I'm in for a clutch replacement next.

Still fingers crossed that no post-remapping glitches appear, but as I say so far so good, so thanks Rob & Mark for the good work and good company during my stay.

Hi everyone

Quick update for anyone who's interested

Spoke to JKM who were very open and helpful but who turned down the work on the basis that "they had never seen a successful DPF delete on a PD170 engine". According to them, it's notoriously problematic on the PD170 and the reprogramming of the ECU always fails, meaning that the car needs to be returned every month or so to the garage for the ECU to be reset.

Glad to report that 5 weeks on from the remap with Shark, absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Bit off topic but how does it compare or feel now since u got it removed?

I'm not sure is there anyone in Ireland that can do this successfully or is there?

Pulls better, few more MPG, better throttle response, sounds a bit different

As far as I am aware there is not much Joe cannot do ;)

Quick phone call will verify

Anyone used any of the Topgear centres for their DPF removal or a remap? I see on their site they say they offer this service and it would be handy if they are any good as their main HQ is about 2 miles away from me.

18 months on and a quick update for anyone who's interested. Now at 138k miles ... I have not had a single problem relating to the remap and have been through 2 MOTs without any issues.

Astounding. Mine's had no DPF for the best part of 3 years and JKM are still saying it can't be done. :wonder:

If you search for some of my posts on the 312mm Brake conversion for an Octy 2, you'll see my opinion on a certain vendor.

Glad to hear that contrary to what you were told elsewhere it's been problem free.
